Hi everyone,

I haven't posted on here in a while, but I wanted to get your thoughts and suggestions on ways we can occupy our little six month old, Peanut.  She is in a crate during the morning until we come home to let her out over our lunch hour and then she is in the crate in the afternoon as well.  When we're home after work, we play with her and her toys (she has everything from squeaky animals to tennis balls to a laser pointer), we work with her on different training commads (she has mastered sit, shake, up, down, kennel up, and come here), and we take her for walks when the weather permits.  We also give her bully sticks which she loves and those take her a good hour or so to finish.  We understand that Peanut is very social and that she always like to play with us and be around us, but we were wondering if you all had any suggestions on toys or treats that we could give her that would occupy her and tire her out to allow us some time to relax?  Being that she is still so young, when she is not occupied, she tens to roam the house and that's not really a problem, but it becomes one when she happens to find something interesting to chew or jump up on.  You all have given us such great advice in the past so we're turning to you again.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I purchased a treat ball about 6 months ago and Mollie LOVES it.  It keeps her occupied and also makes her work for her food which is great and stimulates her mind.  This is particularly handy when the weather is bad and she doesn't get enough exercise.

I usually feed her dinner with it in the evenings.  She will even bring the ball to me for a "refill" when it is empty.  Below are a couple of links to the treat balls.  I purchased the top link which is the cheapest, as I didn't know if she would actually take to it or not.  I am thinking of purchasing a different design one as well.

Yep--treat balls (hollow on the inside so you can stick a dog biscuit in it) or Kongs with treats or peanut butter, or mine LOVE to just play and chew on an empty plastic water bottles with the lid tightened back onto it.  They love the noise it makes---of course, if you dont want to listen to plastic popping you wont want to give that to her.  We always take the bottle away before it gets to the point that they start to actually chew it apart.

I know what you mean about the plastic water bottles.  I think Daisy would give a leg for a water bottle!  We bought some toys for the pups that looked like long animals, but had a plastic water bottle inside.  Daisy thought it was the best thing in the world.  When the bottle inside got to the point that it didn't make the "crunching" noise anymore, she would bring it to me as if to say, "Mom, you need to fix this."  I'd put a new bottle in it and away she'd go.

Now, even if the pups don't have those toys out to play with, as soon as you make any noise with a water bottle, she's right there to find out if she can play with it.  Zona's getting the idea that these are pretty fun toys, too.  It's the only thing that makes them come running faster than unwrapping cheese!

Thank you all so much for the advice! Amanda, we went out and bought one of those treat balls this weekend and Peanut really took to it! She pushes it all over the room trying to get the pieces of food and treat out of it. So do you think it'd be ok to feed her some of her dinner in it as well? I think that might get mind working along with filling her tummy.

We have another question for you all...we try to spend a lot of time with Peanut when we get home from work in the evenings because she's alone all day, but it seems that around 9 pm or so, she hits her "naughty hour" and begins to act crazy, running around and chewing on things and getting into things that she's knows she's not supposed to. Other than continuing to give her toys with treats in them, is there anything we can do to help her wind down at night? We would love for her to just come and lay by us on the couch, but being that she is a puppy and full of energy, we're not expecting that to happen anytime soon...haha!

I am so glad Peanut likes the treat ball!! Of course it would be perfectly fine to put her dinner in it. That is what I do, especially when she hasn't been properly exercised. This stimulates her mind and helps tire her out. Sometimes I will put a couple of cheerios in with the food in the treat ball. It seems to stimulate her even more as she doesn't know if she is getting a kibble or a treat.

As far to the "naughty hour"...Do you walk her when you get home? I would recommend a good long walk. I know you are tired as you have been at work all day, but Peanut hasn't been able to expel her energy. I usually take Mollie out for a walk or to the dog park. I know this is all weather permitting to a certain extent. When weather doesn't permit, we play ball. My husband sits on one end of the living room and me on the other and we throw the ball back and forth to each other. Mollie runs back and forth trying to get the ball. Of course we will make her sit and throw the ball occasionally for her. This seems to tire her out more than just playing the usual ball with her.

But, like you said, Peanut is still a puppy and will of course act like one especially with the chewing and such. Have you thought about having a training session with her each evening? This can expel energy and also be benefit to you as well.

Hi again Amanda, yes we take Peanut for walks when the weather permits. We live in Nebraska and have had record snowfall over the last month or so, which have kepts our walks to a minimum, but we still get out when we can. We do play with Peanut every evening as well as work with her on different training exercises. She loves chasing the laser pointer we have! I've found that whenever she starts to act out, it's best to redirect with some training or some sort of treat related activity to get her mind working again. She is a super smart dog and we love her a ton, we just get a little worn out when the 9 pm hour rolls around and Peanut starts attempting to explore parts of the house and chew on things she shouldn't. We will keep at it and let you know how she progresses!

We took her to Doggie Day Camp on Saturday and she was super tired when we brought her home because she played all day. It was great for her and for us! We also have her signed up for some obedience classes later this month, so that should be good as well. Thanks again for everything!
