Decided to send in an application to adopt from HUA (Hearts United for Animals) which is a local no-kill shelter. They are sending someone to do a home visit on Monday at 1pm. I have the day off due to it being Columbus Day.

This shelter takes in lots of small breed dogs. Many of them rescued from puppy mills. I have a list of six dogs I'm interested in meeting. I'm not sure I will be getting one of these dogs, as some are a little older than I think I want. Just wanted to share this with you all. Here they are in no particular order.

Lemon Drop, 4 yr. old female Doxie

Renaldo, 3.5 yr. old male Chihuahua

Lopez, 4yr old male Chihuahua

Sterling, 4yr. old male Rat Terrier

Esteban, 4 yr. old male Chihuahua

Kyah, 1.5 yr. old female Pom/Rat Terrier

I'd want them all too. I wonder what the temperment of the pom/rattie is like? pom's can be pretty crazy and mean at times...but that girl looks sweet.

Yes, they are all so lovable.

Lemon Drop was rescued from a puppy mill, but is a friendly & playful girl. It is believed she was stolen by bunchers and sold to a miller.

Renaldo was a pm rescue. Amazingly he is extremely outgoing and fun loving.

Lopez was relinquished by owner. He had some health issues, but is now healthy, happy and loving life.

Sterling was pulled from a kill shelter. He is a fun loving acrobat.

Esteban was a pm rescue. He is a very happy and loving boy.

Kyah was relinquished by owner. She is very playful and loves everyone she meets.

I don't normally go for Dachshunds cause each one I've known has been snippy and extremely yappy, but Lemon Drop is sooo darn cute! I love her coloring and her friendly, curious personality just jumps out at ya.

All the others are equaling appealing to me. I will leave the choice up to Bijou though. Whichever one she gets along with best, just might come home with us. Be my luck though none of these will be available by the time I get approved.

I'm thinking she'll probably enjoy playing with dogs her own size so much that she will think they are ALL terrific... then it will be left up to me to choose.

Tell me, how do you choose just one??

The woman doing the home visit just left. She was about an hour late getting here as they had some media show up at the shelter and she had to deal with them.

The visit went well. Bijou was on her best behavior and didn't even bark when she came to the door. Of course I had her leashed to correct her if needed, so she knew something was up.

I asked lots of questions about the dogs I had on my short list. It sounds like Lemon Drop and Lopez would work out best, at least on paper. Still have to do the face to face meetings.

Heather informed me they had just gotten in some Chihuahua mixed puppies, possibly with Rat Terrier, that would be available as soon as they were altered. I will definitely be checking those pups out when we go visit the shelter in a few days.

I am really starting to get excited about a second dog. I believe Bijou will be so very happy to have a playmate.

I'm glad the home visit went well. now the hard part...picking out which dog you want. of the ones you listed, I'd be torn between Lemon Drop and Lopez. the chi mix pups might be good too...it all depends on who Bijou gets along best with, right?

Yes firstly Bijou has to give her approval, but I somehow don't think that will be hard to attain as I know for certain she is going to be so EXCITED to see some little dogs. I'm concerned some of the older dogs may take one look at this hyper little Rattie and swat her up side the head. LOL

Of course it will come down to me saying, okay this is the one we are taking home with us, tough decision, but someone has to do it.

I received an email from HUA. They said I can come up anytime and meet the dogs I'm interested in. Yippee!!

I checked their website awhile ago and see that Esteban has been adopted. I'm so glad he found a home.

The Chi mix pups won't be ready for at least another week but if I decide to get one of them I can pick out the one I want and they will hold it for me. I sure hope Heather was correct and they are mixed with Rattie. I can't imagine how Bijou will react to a pup smaller than her! LOL

Glad the home visit went well. I myself am partial to that pic of Sterling, the rat terrier I don't know how you're ever going to choose.

Yes, Sterling is a handsome fella. Kinda reminds ya of someone don't he?

The deal with him is, I have birds and that could be a problem with Sterling in the house. I'm sure he will find a great home soon though.

Bijou and I went to the shelter today to meet the dogs. The meeting with the two older dogs, Lemon Drop and Lopez went okay, but after discussing the fact that I would like to train the new dog to use a litter box as Bijou does, everyone agreed it was best to get a dog under six months of age.

The litter of Chi-Rattie pups are 3 months old and will be altered next Wed. There are three males and one female. The smallest male was the most Rattie like in appearance, he was a fiesty little thing that only wanted to sit in the shelter worker's lap and bark and growl at Bijou, she did not like that at all.

The little female was adorable, but very shy. She looked more like a Chihuahua. Bijou tried to play with her but she wasn't interested. It would take some coaxing to get her to come around I think. If she looked more like a Rattie I would probably choose her.

Even though Bijou failed to connect with either of these pups, I am going to think it over this weekend and get back to them on Monday. I don't want to rush things and make the wrong decision.
