Pixy generally hides from small kids. I dont know why she never liked them but once in a while she'll let a child near her. I always have to be careful and tell them or the parents not to try and pet her. However one of the funniest things i ever saw: I took PIxy to park and a little boy was kicking a soccer ball. The boy was no older than 3 or 4 yrs old. Well Pixy saw the soccer ball and chased it! The boy was so delighted he started chasing Pixy..........i wasnt sure what she'd do but she started running circles around the little boy! I cracked up it was so funny but i was very happy to see her having fun. |

| Well it makes sense that a dog that has never been around kids, or has been harassed by kids, wouldn't like them. But to say ratties in general aren't kid friendly is crazy. |

Rattie

|
| MY Rattie isn't fond of children because they move so fast and scare him with thier quick movements. However I have seen him give them a warning bite a very light bite that says if you continue to pester me I have teeth... He has never hurt a child but kids get the picture. I believe that it is a parents responsibility to teach children how to behave around dogs and the guardian of the dog to teach dogs how to be around children. Domino listens well when on his leash and I keep him on a leash when kids are around. it keeps the biting down all together. With the TV station putting that on the news they are just getting a story because that is what they do the sensationalize everything to be negative. Very rarely do we ever get "GOOD NEWS" |

I have no issues with Bella and my boys. Even my 5 y/o. I didn't get a pic but this morning Cisto made Bella "all nice and cozy". He got her a pillow, wrapped her up in HIS blankie and had a toy for her to chew on. Now, if neighbor kids come by who parents didn't teach them manners ( surprisingly on LI the kids are worse than the adults) - she goes to the biggest person closest to her and hides. Please post the name of the morning show, so I can drop them a line. |

I hate it when people stereotype a breed this way..... They don't take environment, training, circumstances, into consideration at all. Although it's true and there can be no denying that certain breeds are more apt to get along with children than other breeds... there are exceptions to every situation. It has been my experience that if a dog doesn't get along with children.... 99% of the time it is NOT the dog's fault -- regardless of WHAT breed it is. |

This show? http://www.mandjshow.com/ I had never heard of them until I just checked the tv listings. They are on ABC here. Their website says the dogs were from Atlanta, too bad Mary Beth didn't see it and put a foot in their arses. you can't trust anything on any of the morning shows. They rush through each segment and usually don't have a clue what they are talking about.

I can't stand that show! I tried to watch it one morning when I was off work and I think they both have ADHD. They are manic! They try to cram 15 3-minute segments into an hour instead of having just a few different segments and covering them more thoroughly.

| I don't like when any breed is stereo typed either. Maybe that particular fellow isn't good around kids but they shouldn't lump the whole breed into their statement like that- it's really unfair. Mine love small kids- but some just don't or haven't been socialized to. Not thier fault, and it doesn't make them bad. |

You can send an email to yourcomments@foxnews.com This is the email I sent: I don't know what these people know about Rat Terriers but it evidently isn't much. To put out word that Rat Terriers are not good with children is a bunch of hooey. My Rat Terrier was raised with my two children and did better with the children than the children did with him until they were taught to treat to the dog with respect and consideration. It is not the dog that has a problem it is people with the problem. People need to realize that people need to be trained to properly care for and play with a dog. I have four rat terriers, two of my own and two that are in foster care with me. They have never had a problem with anyone that comes in my house except to bark at them as all dogs do. Until your people learn about this particular breed they should not make them sound like bad dogs that can't be with children because that is a flat out and out LIE! In fact these little dogs have the energy to keep up with active children. If the people who surrendered that dog couldn't train their children then they didn't need a dog to begin with. It is a fact that children and most adults have no idea what it takes to raise a dog as a part of their family. You have to train children as well as the dog what is right and wrong. These little dogs are smart and learn very quickly, I can't say the same for kids. So Mike and Juliet need to learn a bit more about rat terriers before they spout off at the mouth. Thank you and please shut up those ignorant people, Janie |

I was thinking the same thing!!!
It was VERY unfair of them to classify an entire breed based on what someone might have said about one specific dog. And they think by saying that, they are going to get lots of calls wanting that poor little doggie?

UGH!! one of the few times that ratties are actually mentioned, and they have to say something negative! those hosts are just puppets reading from a script...no brains at all. my ratties don't LOVE kids (they haven't been around too many), but all they do is hide from them when my neice and nephew come over...can't blame them...my nephew is a shreeker, and it hurts their ears. |

okay, this is the email I sent: I was extremely disappointed in your portal of Rat Terrier's on todays adoption segment. I know many Rat Terriers who do wonderfully with children. You really need to watch what you say when you stereo-type one breed of dog, especially when this wonderful breed is unknown by the general public. You are giving them a bad name, and many people may never consider Rat Terriers after what you said, and they will miss out on what could be the best dog they have ever known. Next time, think before you spout off about something you know nothing about! |

Clearly it is a matter of training, but I should also note that Hendryx, and some other rat terriers that I've seen since I found out what a rattie is, tends to be a bit mouthy. He certainly was mouthy when we adopted him. I have gotten the feeling that was why he was found wandering. I can imagine that he was bought by some family and tried playing mouth games with a small child. I think that after a few beatings, his former "mother" quietly "lost" him. We opted to teach him how to control his bite first, and then not to bite. That way, if something happens and he actually does get his mouth around somebody, he won't chomp down. He is VERY shy around small children, and cringes if a child is nearby and a mother approaches. |

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK! |

I agree with danbenau. it all depends on how you train the dog too. If I have Prince out and a child approaches I always tell them not to rush up to the dog. I know he gets along with my neices and nephews. But I'm not gonna take any chances with strange kids. I'm sure he would not bite them. But still. Better safe than sorry. |

To Whom It May Concern: I am very concerned with a recent comment that was made on the Man DJ Show about the breed of dog known as a Rat Terrier. I am paraphrasing here, but something along these lines was said about a dog up for adoption, "he was surrendered from a home with small children. These are active dogs that aren't good around kids." This generalization is horribly incorrect!! Instead of basing the traits of an entire breed on one misbehaved, non-trained, and possibly mistreated dog, it should have been stated that this particular dog is not good around children, instead of saying that active dogs aren't good around children. We recently rescued a rat terrier and we also have a 4 year old child. Though a bit keyed up at times, Pixie is by far, one of the most gentle, patient dogs I have ever come across. I do not trust her indefinitely with my daughter, but I don't trust any dog completely with a child, no matter what level of training the dog has mastered. I am asking that the statement your DJ made about Rat Terriers be corrected. It could not have been more false. Thanks, Tabitha |
