The vet said Fred needs to lose 2 pounds. I am on a mission to slim him down. When I feed green beans with his food do I cut out dog food completely or just cut it back? I ordered him this bowl to help him eat s l o w e r too cause he's a chow hound:

He gets enough exercise but he is always eating whatever anyone will give him or he can find. I tried training with him to ignore food but it doesn't work, I don't konw what to do. brake-fast bowl, Medium, blue

About the green beans:  I just cut back on the kibble and mix the veggies in with it.  My dogs LOVE canned green beans, and will eat them with or without dog food.

That's a pretty ingenious looking dog food bowl, too---never saw anythning quite like it before.

Fred likes green beans I just never know what to do with his dry food when serving them with a side of veggies!!

The bowl is called Brake-Fast, it helps dogs who eat super fast slow down due to the prongs in the middle. There is a video on their site to demonstrate:

http://www.brake-fast.net/demo.htm

Fred eats really fast so maybe he never feels full, hopefully this will help slow him down!

Yup, like Paul said, cut back and add the green beans in. How much food is he getting and how much does he weigh?

You can also float his kibble in water to add to a fuller feeling and it will slow him down (he has to drink it). Plus it's good for his kidneys. Another thing to add is pumpkin if he likes that. Bulk without calories.

Wow. That really doesn't seem like alot. Jack and Jeter get a touch less than 2/3 of a cup daily and they are 13 and 14lbs. Does he get a lot of treats?

The bowl is a good idea, similar to putting rocks in a horse's manger when they eat too fast....they have to slow down to get all the food.

I've been giving my chubbies a little pumpkin to fill them up. When I give them green beans I either give them fresh cooked or the canned low sodium kind.

I will try the pumpkin too, what about some chicken breast and carrots too?

As far as the treats, they don't get that many but when people come over they do,. Fred knows that too so sticks close to the treat givers (my mother!)

If you add chicken with the food you are adding more calories so it is likely to defeat the purpose. The point of veggies like green beans, carrots, pumpkin, is that they are high fiber with basically no extra substantial calories to help your dog feel more full.

Baby carrots, plain chicken (no skin) is a good low cal treat, snap peas - I give all those my chubbies to make them feel more full. Mitzy even got a bite of watermelon yesterday but not as part of supper....not sure how much sugar is in that.

I guess I should have explained...if they get the chicken they don't get as much kibble.

Val,

My foster, Prince, came to me a very obese 20 pounds. The prior owners fed him CRAP. I put him on a limited amout of high food and in a month or so, he lost 4 pounds, with ONLY cutting down his food. Actually, when I changed my dogs' diet to grain-free food, they ALL lost weight. I think it's the carbs in the food that has grain that makes them gain weight.

Of course, when I noticed EVERYBODY was losing weight, I increased their amounts and now everybody's back to where they should be. Makes sense I guess - you feed a high protein, low carb diet, they're gonna lose weight. I suppose I should try that LOL!

Since we are talking about feeding---I am afraid that nora is growing to fast (my own neurosis for sure) She came to me at 3.5 pounds and at 5.5 months is about 9 pounds--She has gotten much longer and looks ok for now

I feed her the low end of the allotment that is suggested on the bag of food--they say one cup to 1.5 cups for a pup her age. I give her a cup and she get treats along the day and lots of excersise.

At what point does one decided the adult ration of food they get? Thank you and If I hijacked this thread I apologize and will ask again some where else)

No Hijacking LOL, I just seen  your response as I forgot about this thread! I would ask your vet if Melo is gaining to fast. I got both mine terriers when they were already 2 so I am not sure about the growing rate of a puppy. As long as you can feel her ribs she is okay, it's once you can't feel them anylonger it's time to lose some weight. I think what you are feeding sounds fine, 1.5 cups does seem like a lot when you throw in treats too. Does she look to be getting bigger??

Geigh needs to lose about 2 pounds. But I feel like I am starving her already. She weighs 12 pounds and the vet says she should weigh about 10. I feed her 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 in the evening. She gets two treats a day. I feeld her duck and potato because of her allergies. Also, duck and potato treats. When we get her allergies under control I am going to try to get her more exercise.

ACCCK, Sorry Melo. Okay so Nora is a cutie pie. Honestly you will be able to tell if you are overfeeding by looking at her. As long as she looks healthy and in good weight you should be fine. When in doubt, ask the vet!!

Does she scarf her food down. I felt like I was starving Fred because he ate so darn fast. I got him the Break Fast bowl and now he eats slower and probably gets fuller cause of it!!

What's the brand?  If I think it's the brand I think it is...... that's what my Prince's prior owners had him on and it just made him FAT!  I fed him Eagle Pack Holistic - the fishy kind, I think it was the sardine formula, and he did just fine.  I now have him on Wellness CORE Ocean formula (grain free) and he's doing fine on that, too!!

It is Dick Van Patten, but the vet says she has to stay on duck and potato because she is so allergic to everything else. I don't know if you saw the thread I posted with the results from her allergy skin tests. Is there a different brand that I can feed her?

When Lucky weighed 28 pounds,  I started feeding him 1/4 cup twice a day also.  I felt guilty for feeding him so little food so I added green beans and made sure to feed him a high protein food.  I fed EVO Reduced Fat (52% protein) and added fish oil to his diet.  I believe that if you satisfy the nutritional needs (proper amounts of protein and fats),  then the quality is much more important than the quantity of food fed.  Lucky has leveled off at about 20 pounds now.  Since the start of spring, I've been rotating between two Eagle Pack Holistic Select foods, the Chicken and Rice, and the Small and Mini Breed Adult formulas.

I'm personally not a fan of any food that is so low in protein and it's been my experience that my dogs were unfulfilled eating a small amount of low protein/high carb food.  Do you have to feed Duck and potato?   I know Eagle Pack has a Duck and Oatmeal food in their Holistic Select line of foods. It's got a bit more protein and can be supplemented with a little canned D & O food.  I would recommend adding some canned NB Duck& Potato but I see that the canned is only 23% protein, leading me to believe it's got more potato than duck in it.  On the other hand, the Eagle Pack Duck canned food is 41% protein.
