My baby girl did 10 days on antibiodic for Giarrdia....took new sample in yesterday...SHE STILL HAS IT!! Uggh.  Poor baby girl.  Poor me too, she can't hold the runs in the house and I have cleaned up after her numerous times!  She doesn't signal that she needs to go out...so she slips up if we aren't paying attention.  So now onto round 2 with meds.  2X per day now for 10 days.  I hope this takes care of it.  Anyone else ever have to double rounds of meds for this to clear up? I'm so worried that it is in the yard from the rabbits/deer.  She likes to eat their you know what!  Doc thinks she may have gotten from the puppy mill she was rescued from, but my old dog had it once too..hmm.

Luby did a double round of Metronidazole for something the vet couldn't even figure out! Only last week (after 8 long weeks of the runs) did they figure out it was hookworm. None of the medicine our vet gave worked until he found the hookworm. He gave us some Panacur and and recommended a food change. Now we're good to go again.

I would highly recommend giving probiotics after giving that much antibiotics.   For the giardia,  Panacur is said by some to more effective than antibiotics.  The recommended dosage is:

"I have been told by several vets, the best course is to use Panacur for 3 days and repeat it again in 2 weeks, taking the same 3 day dosage and dividing it up over 10 days to get it at all stages of the cycle. I have recently read that Flagyll and Metronidazole are only 40% effective any more, so discuss this with your vet and ask about the use of Panacur."

The Peanut one had resistant Giardia (and Coccidia, tape worm and round worms - yay). Poor little guy was a skin and bones sickly mess and he had to go through several rounds of several meds before it was firmly out of his system. He had Panacur, Metronidazole, Silymarin, and a couple of oral wormers at different times. It took about 4 months before he was completely clear and now is on year round Sentinal which will keep him from getting HW and other parasites. Just keep testing until your pup is clear. Also boost the immune system with a good food, vitamins and probiotics. This will help in fighting off the current issues and preventing future problems. And keep the fecal matter picked up in the yard.

Good luck!

Thanks! I'm not sure what Oreo is on, I don't have it in front of me at the moment. I think it is Flagyll. I do have a probiotic that I keep in the fridge, however, I haven't given it to her yet due to the diarrhea she has had for so long. Is it okay to start her on it? Also what do you think about a food change? Should I wait or should I go ahead and do it? She doesn't really love the California Natural. She'll eat it, but it will sit there all day until she gets hungry enough.

My Dora has had this resistant giardia too. We have done the Flagyll and the Albendizole. I switched vets and put her on a human drug called tindamax. I gave it to her for 4 days. Then repeated it in another 2weeks. I take another sample in today. I spoke to him earlier and he said if she still has it, that him and several other vets have been consulting together over this resistant strain and that one of the vets has found a drug that is 97% effective against this strain. I will try to find out waht it is. Just hang in there. We have been dealing with this for 3 months.

Wow...if this doesn't work, I'll mention what you said about the other drug.  We have to pay $27 for each new stool sample!  No biggie I guess, just want her to get better, but I wish they would do it for free after so many!  Yeah right huh?

Where do you live?  We are in IL near Chicago.  My vet had said he doesn't see it all that much around here.  But like I said my last dog had it too, so I wonder...  Oreo has had probably since she came home or shortly thereafter.  We've had her a little over a month now.

THanks for your help.

You are kidding Carrie? Wow. My vet does follow up fecals for free once she starts treating for something. Then again, she gives us a huge rescue discount for all fosters (the ones usually that have the worm issues) so she is a pretty awesome vet all around.

I pay $40 a fecal exam. I live in Orange County California. We call our dog "The Golden Dog" beacuse she has cost us a fortune. I got the results back today and she is finally giardia free. YEAH!

Sounds like you have a great vet.  I should probably say something to ours about having to pay each time.  You never know unless you ask, maybe they won't charge for the next one coming up.
