First, it is important to know when NOT to induce vomiting. DO NOT INDUCE vomiting if any of the following apply:

1. Swallows an acid, alkali, solvent, bleach or heavy-duty cleaner;
2. Is severely depressed or comatose;
3. Swallows a petroleum product;
4. Swallows tranquilizers (which prevent vomiting) unless you catch it immediately after ingested;
5. Swallows sharp objects (which could lodge in the esophagus or perforate the stomach);
6. Or if more than two hours have passed since the poison was swallowed

To induce vomiting:

Use 3% hydrogen peroxide (not hair bleach strength).  Despite the label saying it is toxic, it can be used for this purpose.

  1. Give your dog 1 teaspoon (or 5 cc or ml) for each 10 pounds of body weight.  The easiest way to do this is to have a dosing syringe on hand.
  2. After dosing with peroxide walk your dog or shake the tummy to "mix" the peroxide.  Vomiting should occur within about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. If vomiting does not start after 20 minutes, repeat procedure.  My vet tells me it can often take several dosings for vomiting to start.

ALWAYS consult with your vet if your dog has swallowed anything poisonous.  Often times follow up treatment is necessary - such as Vitamin K (for rat poison) or charcoal treatment.

Thanks for the info! Awhile back my boyfriends toy fox terrier swallowed something and the emergency vet (we called) said to induce vomiting with this method. It took so many tries that we got worried he was getting to much peroxide and decided to stop... I think it was like 4 tries... The dog actually liked the peroxide! He thought it was a treat, which they said was very odd When we called the vet back they said we could try again but if we didn't feel like it was working to just wait for it to pass... yay! Which it did the next day, but it was a scary night. I just wish I had this info back then because we were never told to walk him or shake his belly... that's probably why it didn't work!

Kim, I have used this method three times, once on my Lab and twice on Katie.  All three times it took about 4 dosings -- I didn't know at that time to walk them or shake the belly either.  But, my vet tells me it often takes several dosings.  I think I will edit my original post with this information.

and the other question is, how do you get said pupper to drink hydrogen peroxide if there is no dosing syringe around???

we found the magic answer...turkey baster! my darling daughter figured this out all by herself at the age of 13 when faced with an emergency while mom was at work...i was so proud of her.

At first I thought it was saying to shake the dog to mix.  This is good to know!!  Jack got a hold of a bunch of grapes yesterday, unbeknownst to me.  My children fed them to him.  So after playing with the dogs next door he then vomited up like 10 full grapes.  I thought that was it but after we got home up came about another 10....undigested not even chewed!  I don't know how he got all them in there. Well, at that point they had to all be out of there...nothing else was coming up.  So we were told just to watch him, but this peroxide trick is wonderful, I had never heard of it.  Thanks!!!

Thanks Jan.... But Daisy eats bark off of the trees, she also eats feathers, oh, and one of her other favorites, rocks..... Then, after she eats that stuff, she urps them up, and then I end up cleaning it... ( Not my favorite thing to do.) What should I do????? I am also worried that she may get splinters in her stomach and then they will be stuck in there.... Any advice???

Pepper swallowed a rock a month or so ago, the vet told us to give her 3 tablespoons and wait 5 minutes. It worked like a charm! She's only 10 pounds at the time, so it seems like a lot by what you guys are saying.

I would not worry about Daisy eating bark, Pepper eats whole sticks. She gobbles them up, and it doesn't bother her at all. Organic stuff like wood seems to digest. It's the plastic and rocks that worry me. Oh, and the ants she likes to sniff up her nose.

Thank you for posting this. This is for the sort of emergency that we never want to have happen, but should be prepared for anyway!

This really works.....I have done this a few times.  My rattie likes to get into things lol.  He got into my pocket book and ate half of a tampon so I had to get him to throw it up..Everything was fine after that!

My brother's Cocker once got into mouse poisoning and the vet also advised the peroxide method. Worked like a charm.

That's my baby girl, Bijou! She's a Toy Rat Terrier.
