Now that I am married and I have way more time on my hands I want to breed Daisy. Any suggestions? Also if anyone knows of any studs in North Florida/ South Georgia that would also help.

Posted By Daisy&Dixie's mom on 04/19/2007 2:22 PM So any suggestions on breeding Miss Daisy Duke?
My suggestion would be to wait until she is 1.5 yrs old. They are more mature and ready to breed. If you breed before that it is kinda like a 15 yr old having a baby. They are able to have babies, but it can be mentally hard on her. Make sure you breed her to a stud that is smaller than her, and research the history of the stud and his puppies. You want to make sure the puppies you are bringing into the world are happy and healthy. I think personality is a huge thing too. Someone can have a dog that meets the standard perfectly but if they are aggressive, extremely timid etc.. no one will want them. Look for a stud that is happy and has the wonderful rat terrier traits. Make sure you dont breed her to another blue also, it can cause color dilution alopecia, which is a painful hair loss condition. If you ever have any questions feel free to email me. I know Susan breeds too. |

Daisy is the black tri. The big reason I want to breed her is that during her first heat she went through a false pregnancy. It was right around the time we brought Dixie home. The vet told me it would continue to happen even if I got her fixed until she was able to have puppies. This will be her 2nd heat.

| It just depends on her age. I wouldn't suggest that you breed her at less than 18 months old. My moms beagle had a false pregnancy once and then her next heat cycle she didn't. |

HI! Glad to see you back. First off you need to make sure that her and her husband to be have both had their patellas checked. They have to be a year old for this anyway. Then his and her eyes checked to make sure that both have healthy eyes. Hips aren't usually done with our breed and I hope they never have to be. since she is a black tri, you can breed her to any color that takes your fancy. Depends on what color pups you want and what is in her backround pedigree. Because she had a false pregnancy, you will need to make sure the breeding takes. Have your vet in on your plans and ask when is the earliest he/she can check for pups. Dogs that have false pregnancys sometimes have a harder time getting pregnant for some reason, I think its hormonal. Feed her a higher quality food or supplement her during breeding and after her third week of pregnancy. I prefer liver and eggs, with doggie vitamens. Then be prepared for all emergencies. C-sections are very expensive and it is best to have the money on hand at the time as most vets aren't avalible and you may have to use a stranger vet and they always want CASH. |

It is also hard to make her realize that those really are her puppies. Sometimes the doggies don't want to believe you. I had a Boston that I had to force to feed her pups and she was horrified that I wanted her to lick the nasty little things. I had to wash them after every meal until I could get her to do it. It was not fun, but the pups bonded to people very easily. It is amazing that most dogs trust us so much that they will believe what we say. Most of my Bostons would give me the "I'm not sure about this but if you say so OK" look.
If the male is near the female in size, there shouldn't be problems. Unless something like his grandmother was a Decker and he is unusually small for his breeding thing happens. You can get large pups and small ones in the same litter. It is best to get uniform sized pups though, the mom has about the same effort that way with all of them. Even so thing happen and planning for it is the best way to deal with it. |

| Buffy's pups were 2 and 3 oz and she still had a c-section. She is 6 pounds. I guess she must have a very small pevlis. |

Welcome back!!! Glad to see you again. As far as the breeding - I think you've got some great advice from Susan and Sara. Testing of the patellas, hips and eyes before breeding is a must. I also don't think you should be breeding a dog before the age of 18 months - my mom bred boxers while I was growing up - she never bred her females until after they were 2. Make sure the male is not too big - you don't want lots of complications down the road. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH That's about all I have - good luck!!!

Six pounds is a really small dog! My Maggie when I had her bred had a weight of 16 lbs. Smaller bitches have more problems anyway with every breed. I am amazed that she had as many pups as she did. Size does make a difference with litter size too. Most very small bitches only have two or three pups at the most. Where the larger ones minis and standards will almost always have five and six to eight isn't uncommon. |

my mom bred boxers while I was growing up - she never bred her females until after they were 2.
Boxers do mature later than Ratties do. But over a year and the second heat is good for a dog the size of a Rattie. Smaller dogs do mature a little faster than the larger breeds, some of the giant breeds don't mature till they are almost three years old, then they don't live as long either. I have a freind who has Irish Wolfhounds and they are just a heartache waiting to happen. They only live for 6-8 years. |
