How many of you breeders ship puppies and what airlines seem to be the best?

Not all airlines will ship dogs. I have used Delta and American. They both have treated the dogs well when they got to their destination. The smaller pup was taken out of the crate and played with for a while before I got there, but all doors were closed and the pup was glad for some attention. The older dog I had shipped was in the crate when I got him and he had full food and water dishes from the people in receiving. Neither dog had any trama that I know of, there are lots of animal lovers working for airlines and I had really good results. I had the dogs shipped to me from California to Oregon, which isn't a real long trip either. Cross country might have different results.
The weather (temperature) has to be in a very specific range before the airlines will ship. Too high a temp and they won't, too low a temp and they won't. You need to ask the airlines what their temperatures that they will ship is. Also ask about layovers, and if baggage or ground crew will feed and water on layovers. And where the dog has to wait, inside or outside.

I forgot, too that the pups must be a certain age before they are shipped, it differs with the airlines. But think the minimum is 12 weeks old. Shot records should be taped to the crate too, as well as a vet certificate stating that the pup is in very good health.

I am flying Airtran back to Florida from Texas. I will have him with me, so don't know about shipping them alone. It is 65.00 on top of my regular fee.

My Ratties mostly come from Sunset Acres in Castle Rock Wa. They are all of them Fire Mountain Lines and are from 100% to 89%. How she figures the percentages I don't know. I love the line though. I am getting intelligence, showability, and personality. The lady I got most of my dogs from is getting lots of dilutes from black tri breedings, as well as chocolates and dilutes there. She has had from black tris: apricot, lemon, blue, chocolate, and pearl. She has no sable in her lines cause she doesn't really care for the color and has never bred to sable.

The dogs I have shipped have all been Boston Terriers. And they are hard to deal with shipping cause they are delicate about temperature and go into asthma attacks when they get upset.

Blondie was actually shipped TO us.  We found her from a Breeder in OK.  She had to be at least 12 weeks old I think and had to a health certificate.  It was an extra $150 to ship her.  To be honest though - I think she had a really BAD experience.  When my husband picked her up from the airport, her food and water bowls attached to her crate were spilled over into her crate.  She was SCARED to death.  To this day she has TERRIBLE motion sickness.  Whether it was the plane ride or just that she doesn't like being in moving vehicles, I'm not sure.

UPDATE: I had my baby shipped to me from Nashville TN to Reno NV on American Airlines. They brought him right to me within 10 minutes of the plane landing and he seemed fine. I think they did a very good job because he did not seem to be traumatized in any way. I would use them again if the situation called for it. Two thumbs up!!

Renae has some very nice Fire Mt dogs. Most of ours have FM lineage too. We must admit, that FM is a sickness. A good sickness. If you like the FM line well.. you end up loving them. Lou Blanco of Case De Rats, I believe also has FM in her lines.

IMO.. if you have FM in your dogs then you have some good dogs. Rosali did a lot for our breed if you ask me.

Thank you! I fell in love with my Maggie who was my first Fire Mtn. doggie and I haven't been able to stop since.Berry and Simon are both wonderful dogs. Simon had been a little slower to house train but I think that most boys are a little slower with that anyway.

I noticed that he was a really pretty boy when you had him on your atavar before. Do you prefer spots or tuxes?

Even though we have several full color coat patterns, I can't say I prefer one over the other.  What I prefer is a Rat Terrier and/or AHT that fits the Standard, that we think will help improve our breed.
Good health, temperament and EXCELENT conformation ..OH! did I mention PERFECT!!..lol

Pretty girl, was she sable at birth? I too believe that fitting the standard is important. But standards can and do change and knowing that the change is in the interests of the breed is the important thing. Like the merle thing is not in the interests of the breed and wouldn't improve anything, just make more trouble for breeders that want structure to work for and not against us. Blindness and deafness help no dog. Sure they can live full lives with people that are able to work with their handicap but it is hard on the dog and most people are not equiped to deal with a dog with handicaps, anymore than most can deal well with a child with handicaps! I would rather that it just not happen with our breed, but can work with reasons to accept changes that won't hurt the breed. Not that I breed any brindle ratties or ever intend to. But if it showed up I would not be inclined to freak out, as I would if a merle showed up in a litter. There would definately be some spaying and neutering going on if a merle showed up, but I would be more inclined to try to trace the genetics on a brindle to try to work around it, without immmediatly spaying and neutering all dogs involved in its ancestry that I had control over. Maybe its a wrong thiing to do but at least its honest.

Hey Susan,

Rose was born the color that you see. She is what is referred to as a clear tan. Rose and her brother are mentioned on the web site I gave you before about color genetics. She has no sableing and comes from a black and tan with white sire and dam.  Her black is recessive.

You and I are on the same page about the Standard and the merles. The Standard we have is what we have.  I'd like to see a lot more clarification but until things change it is all we have .

My Marble is a Blue Merle. How is it bad?

Susan

Terrier Terror

It is bad for breeding, NOT for being a pet and being neutered. If you breed merle to merle there is a lethal factor in the genes that cause dead, deaf and blind puppies. It is a ressesive to get merle and ressesive to ressesive can cause major problems in pups besides the lethal factors.

Orvis was shipped to me in Colorado From Texas. The breeder flew him Continental because they have temperature controlled cargo spaces (i am sure other airlines do to). she also drove an extra two hours to take him to houston (instead of dallas) to prevent him from having a layover.  He did get sick on his flight but was ready and a happy guy when we picked him up. The people in the cargo place were so nice and playing with him through his cage door when we got there.  He gets motion sickness now too but i don't know if that is because he flew or because he is so "special". I guess overall it wasn't too bad because i am having it done again!!!!

I had a Chihuahua that I flew from Phoenix to Houston. I used American airlines. They were really good with him and when my mom went to pick him up... they brought him right out to her. I had to have a special carrier approved by the airline, health certificate, vacination record. The food and water was given to him as well when he landed. I'd use them again.
