Hi,

I am very interested in getting a new puppy, although I have had them growing up - I haven't had one in several years since I went off to college/graduated etc. I've done research and have fallen in love with getting a miniature rat terrier, but I've been trying to find a breeder by my home in Western NY and haven't been able to find anything online. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm open to having a puppy flown to me from someone else ... but I would kind of like to play with them first. What are people's thoughts on this? This is my first puppy, so any input would be helpful!

Thanks

Anna

Well they seem to be a good fit for what I'm looking for size wise, in terms of not too teeny tiny but not too large. My friend has one with a great personality and the books and websites I read about rat terriers all seemed to say the same types of things that they were very smart and energetic (as the cross of two working terrier breeds) but they could also be great companions, and could just cuddle and lay by your side. I also like the way they look, I think they look quite smart and intelligent. Due to the fact that they were somewhat of a "cross breed," I've read that in some cases they are less likely to have hip displaysia - which is good for the dog. I like that their coloring isn't also consistent, they are quite unique and different - instead of always looking the same.

Do you know if the breeder you got Sassie from is still having litters? Or have their contact info so I could find out? I have tried web searches and haven't found anything? Also, I would feel a lot more comfortable going through some sort of a reference ... again, if you don't mind! Thanks!

Where are you located, WNY is pretty big.... so it would be easier to see  if you are close enough....

I'm in Rochester, NY - but I would be willing to drive for a puppy! Also, do you have a Miniature?

That's good enough for me! Do you have any idea how I might be able to find a breeder in WNY? I'd really like to try and find a puppy this summer ... I've also heard that it's good to socialize Rat Terriers from a young age, and I figured that it's much better to try to do that in the summer!

There are some listed in Potsdam NY. Don't know if that is where Sarah [swatson6] got hers or not. She has had some problems with the blue! Here is a link http://www.k9stud.com/RatTerrierPuppiesforSale.aspx.

You also might want to check out Ratbones! We adopted from them in January! Got our wonderful Ty! Here is their link http://ratbonerescues.com/.

Thanks to everyones posts to far! I have looked through some of the sites, but am still hoping to try to find a breeder that is within somewhat reasonable driving distance from my home in W. New York and comes recommended to purchase a puppy from this summer.

Does anyone have any recommendations? They would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you again!

Just a thought, some of our Ratbone rescue people are in your area. Have you considered rescue as opposed to a breeder? I know a few on here rescued puppies, as they wind up needing forever homes as well. Is that an option?

Thanks for the ideas buttonbutt and alice4512. I have thought about Ratbone, but currently I am looking to adopt a puppy in the summer of '08 and most of the dogs I see on Ratbone are adults or not in my area. But I will check back!

One of the breeders in Potsdam is Halls Kennels
http://www.hallskennel.com/rt.htm

I would suggest rescue though. I have had only two dogs my entire life and both have been rescued from kill shelters. My old gal Luna is 15 now, and while in ailing health, she has had a wonderful life. My rattie is Egypt and she was rescued from a kill shelter in Ohio. I got her in September, and it turns out that the moron breeders put her in the shelter because the little tippy top of her ear was folded and stayed that way.

So, according to her breeder, the "imperfection" was a death sentence.

Please please please consider rescue.
