I am breeding my rat terrier.  We seem to be having some problems......the first night we brought the female home they did the " deed" if you know what i mean but since then they havent done anything.  They seem to love each other.  They play together, sleep in the bed together and romp through the house.  I just dont understand it.   Gracie the female is still bleeding and she seems like she wants to be bred.  She backs herself up to him lol.  Any ideas just let me konw....not that I can make them breed lol.  Thanks

Hollie

Give 'em some privacy and quit watchin'! You don't want an audience do you???
Maybe once was all it took.

I'd say leave them alone, also she may be sore. Breeding is strenous, the male will lose weight and the female is going through a whole mix of things. Let them be. If they breed, they breed. Unless she is being aggressive then let um be.

May be a dumb question but I thought the female was most fertile after the bleeding slowed or stopped? Maybe as she stops bleeding they'll mate again....?

It is in the first  three to four days after she stops bleeding that she is fertile. You breed them the first and the third day after the bleeding stops. Brielle's breeder said Brielle's mom was not wanting to breed so she actually held her each time she was bred to let the male get to her. they have to hook up, in order for it to work...I know TMI.

I've had a few breed while bleeding. My rule of thumb is if the female isn't aggressive and she is standing and the male is interested and acting like he is attempting to mate let the male do his job. I had 3 litters using the "in the backyard alone for 3 hours" method. It's as simple as it sounds. I remove all other dogs. Leave the couple alone outside, and check on them as I felt necessary which was about once an hour.

That is all fine and good if you have a female that is not going to tear the male up cause she is MAD that she is stuck! Some of the nicest bitches that I have object to being stuck and unless you are around to hold her head he will be torn up something fierce. She can have been happy to breed until that happened and want to breed again after, but I value my boys too much to let her bite where ever she can reach. This can also cause the male to be too scared to breed again. He likes her alright but he is thinking about what she is going to do when they get stuck and it just turns him right off. You need to be around when they are breeding if you think that they need privacy WATCH THROUGH A WINDOW! But make sure you watch! And if she gets aggressive, go rescue the poor male.

I never had this problem. I always hear my females when they hook and run outside to pet the girl and hold her head. But my girls always make allota noise.

Hi, i personally wuld not let them completely alone you need to watch (kinda) so you know when they tie. it will help with the due date if you know the day they first tied mark it down. 62 to 63 days from that date she will be due to deliver her puppies if it took that time around. each day they mate mark it down. alot of times my male would not mate with my females till a certain time he would keep checking them and when he knew the time was right look out everytime you turn around they were tied. but they will not do it all day long maybe only once per day sometime twice. then go a day without tieing at all just let them be together keep an eye out and when you least expect it they will tie. good luck

Thanks guys!! They still havent done anything since Wed night but like ratty5 said he is checking her. She is not a bit aggressive, they love each other. Even when they were tied up they both just had a werid look on their face. I am just going to let nature take its course. If it happens it happens if not .....I will be sad. I really want another pup!! I know it will work out for the best though. Thanks again!!!
