I have a little female, Elphaba, who went into heat and bred 4 times. Tied 4 times and we thought we'd hear the pitter patter of little paws, she seemed to go through typical pregnancy but we got to a point where she wasn't gaining weight and just looked fat. Now her personality was off. This happened early may last year, and we figured false pregnancy she didn't take no big deal. Well she still hasn't come back into heat, she's well due to have come into heat and she isn't sick. We are hesitant about random vet visits because she isn't acting or displaying any signs of being ill. Her shape is back to normal, but no signs of coming into heat. We would adore a litter out of her, her confirmation is great she is genetically goregous from great lines and I'm really ready to see what she produces. So anyone out their help me out? Her heats are around 6 months apart, she is a holding breeder, meaning to be bred she has to be muzzled or held because she does bite her mate. Even when flagging and she'll stand for a moment but then she just attacks the stud dog. Anyone's insight would be nice, maybe she needs to cope with not having a litter? Should we treat it like she did have one? Poor elphie.

A lot of things could have happened. you really need to see the vet next time to be sure she is carrying pups. it sounds like false pregnancy. But you never know. The vet can check her hormone levels next heat to see if she did concieve, and there is always the x-ray to see see how many pups to expect. One thing you have got to realize is that it could have been pymetra, an infection in the uterus. you can lose your dog this way. I lost one of my Bostons this way, thought she was pregnant and the infection ended up killing her. There is not much hope if it goes too far. Caught early enough antibiotics work well, but most don't catch it early. There are so many things that can go wrong with breeding, most don't think about that part. Like trying and trying to breed the perfect bitch only to find out that she is infertile! And dogs do get venereal diseases too. Sorry if I am too negative but there is so much! And most of it has happened to me. Do take your girl in to the vet and talk to the vet about what happened, it would probably be your best bet in finding out what went wrong, cause something did.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie.

Well called the vet! Good news, they think she'll come back into heat in the spring summer and should be fine. The vet see's no problem with her since she is acting fine and is advising us to wait and re-breed. If the next breeding fails we will do some more tests. Since it has been around 6 months and she is acting normal she just didn't take.

Have you checked her thyroid to be sure? It is worth it anyways since you are breeding her.

I always have my dogs tested for infections before breeding. They can pick up an infection from one heat to the next. If they have an infection at the time of breeding; that can be enough to keep them from becoming pregnant. I have my vet do a guarded vaginal culture and brucellosis test. A nice litter of puppies is worth the cost of doing the test.

I'm very willing to do the testing, my vet just doesn't see a problem yet. I will bring her in for the test after I get Minnie's rabies, and general exam done for her TDI certification.
