Hello!

I am new to this site, but have been looking around here for awhile now.  I am looking to get a rat terrier puppy this summer ( I CAN'T WAIT ), and I was just wondering where people from the Pacific Northwest have gotten their ratties from.  I have found a few breeders that sounds promising, has anyone heard of silver stars rat terriers?  I am looking for a toy sized dog, since I will be living in a small apartment with limited space.  Can't wait to hear from other rattie lovers

Hi Kristin, I got my ratties from Sunset Acres near Longview Wa. They are very honest and nice people and do invite farm visitors to look at pups and moms and dads. I also have a litter at this time but mine won't be ready to go until the end of January. I have 3 pearls, 1 chocolate, 1 blue and 1 black. All are tris. the girls are all piebald and the male is tuxido. My pups will be minis or small standards, a couple are smaller than the rest. With ratties you really can't say if they will be toys, as you can get almost any size in a litter. I met a few breeders in the Seatle area, try going through the UKC site to get to them.

PS Be careful, go see puppies and check out the parents. Are the people willing to let you see the dogs where they live? Or do they bring pups to you and not let you visit the Moms and DAds where they are living. There is one kennel here in the PNW that is a puppy mill and they will not allow people to see their dog runs, they just bring the pups to you in the house. This is a whole lot different than other breeders do business. My dogs live in the house. Sunset Acres dogs are kenneled but they allow you to go visit the dogs and see how they are kept. Renae's pups are born in the house and live there until they are big so they are very well socialized. As are mine. Always ask to see the other dogs and if the people don't want you to see them be suspicious!

Thanks Susan,

Your post will be very helpful! I won't be ready for a pup till summer, so I'll have a lot of time to shop around and find a good breeder. I have looked at sunset acres, and I believe Renae is the one who reccomended Silver Stars rat terriers to me. So I should plan a visit in the next few months to meet the dogs before deciding to choose one of their puppies? Let me know if you'll have any pups over the summer months as well It does seem that there are a lot of rat terrier 'puppy mills' in this area, the pet store near my house ALWAYS has rat terriers.. but don't worry, I know to stay away from the pet stores!

Kristen,

I'm in the same boat as you.  We're hoping to bring home a puppy rat terrier the beginning of June.  We live in Boise, Idaho and have been having a hard time finding a breeder near us.  I've been in contact with Renae at Sunset Acres, so glad to hear the positive feedback about her.  Why did Renae refer you to some other place?  Location closer to you?    I'd be interested to hear if you find other good breeders in the Pacific NW.

Hi Bronek! Yeah I can definetely refer you to some breeders I've found, trust me I've been doing my research! Renae refered me to Silver Stars because of the size I'm looking for, under 10 lbs, which she doesn't usually have. I need a small rattie because I'll be living in an apartment. I found a breeder in Idaho, I don't know much about them, I think they just have one pair of breeding dogs, but they seem really nice. Their website is www.weiserriverratters.com, and I know they are planning on a litter this summer. Also I've heard good things about Hargen's rat terriers, which is also located in Idaho. The Hargens are in Lewiston, ID and they also carry toy- mini sized rat terriers. Their website is http://imageevent.com/hargensrats. The breeder I'm currently looking at is in SW Washington, a pretty long drive from you I'm sure, but her website is http://imageevent.com/silverstars. The silver stars site as a few other rat terrier breeders referenced on the bottom of her site if you are looking for a different size too I hope that helps! I'm really excited to meet someone else looking for a pup this summer, I don't know if I can take the wait!

Kristen,

Thanks so much for the great info about other breeders.  I just sent them all emails.  Weiser is not too far from us, so it'd be great if something worked out there.  We want something bigger than a toy.  We have a 4 yr old boy and a 6 yr old girl.  I think a bigger, sturdier dog would be better since we have kids.  Are you trying to get your pup at the beginning of the summer?  That's what we hope.  We're teachers, so we'd have time to be home with the pup and really bond.  Have you figured out if you want a male or female?

It's fun to go through this process with someone else.  I can't believe how hard it is...to pick a breed, then find a breeder, etc.

Have you had dogs before?  We haven't.  This will be the first for all of us.

I know what you mean.  I just want the pup now!  I don't want to wait until summer.  But it wouldn't really make sense for us to bring one home now when the pup would have to be alone all day.  Why do you have to wait until summer?

Keep me posted!

Bronek,

Not getting a toy makes sense if you have children, it's better to have a dog they don't have to worry about hurting when playing with him/her. I'm a college student at the University of Washington, so a toy dog will work best with my lifestyle. I'm waiting till the summer for the same reason, I'll be out of school too But I'm going to wait till later in the summer because my current lease doesn't allow dogs, and although my landlord lives in California and would never know... it's not worth the risk to me, so I want to wait till I live somewhere that allows pets. I think weiser might work out well for you because I think their having a litter that will be ready in July or June, but I think that their dogs are pretty small, maybe a little bigger than a toy.

This won't be my first dog, but it will be my first dog that will live up in Seattle with me. I have a dog that lives with my family right now in the tri-cities, he's the one in my avatar picture. His name is Buddy, we got him from the shelter, but I decided I want to go with a breeder this time to know the parents and the behavior I could expect from the dog. Plus, I've never had a puppy, and I wanted to have the whole experience of raising a dog. What made you decide to get a dog? How'd you decide on a rat terrier? Let me know which breeder you choose! If you need help finding more breeders, let me know! Here are a few more that I've come across..

Susan,

Great!  Do you think you'll be having a litter this spring?  We're both teachers, so we are trying to find a puppy that will be ready to be place in late May/early June.  Let me know, if so!  Also, what size are you dogs?  We're looking for one between 11 and 20 lbs.  We like the tri color or the black and tan.

Thanks!

We live in Eastern WA.

We got a male Rattie from Hargens.  And while he is a great looking dog, he was very skiddish.  We have had him for about 6 months now, he is getting better but will still snap at us.  He is very possive, and maybe its because he was a smaller puppy, I dont know.

Our female Rattie, on the other hand is an angel.  She is from The Potter's in Clarkfork ID.  All their puppies are raised inside with the whole family.  I would not hesitate getting another pup from them.  I dont have their info, but you can look them up on the UKC website under Idaho breeders.

Good luck.

I have two girls that I had planned on breeding this spring. My rats range from 13 to 18 pounds last time I weighed them. My male Simon is the heaviest at 18 lbs. Maggie weighs in about the same, but she carries a little extra weight between litters. CeeCee is 16 lbs. she will be bred to Simon this spring. And our Berry is 13 lbs. but she is taller than CeeCee. She will be bred this spring to Zeb, who is CeeCee's brother. I did not want to breed Berry and Simon together as they are half brother and sister. I again could get any colors from these breedings as Maggie is mother to CeeCee and Zeb and she is Pearl. Simon's mom carries ressesives as she has produced lemons and apricots, bred to Simon's dad and she is black tri like Simon. Berry is chocolate tri but her dad (and Simon's) has produced blues and pearls with several different females.
Sooooo I could get black tris, chocolate tris, blue tris, pearl tris, and maybe even lemon or apricot tris. But no sable as there have not been any sables in the backround for as far as I could research on pedigrees. All fire mountain line.

Wow, sounds like lots of possiblities.

Do you think you'll have pups ready to be place the beginning of June, or will they be ready late summer?

Not exactly sure when girls will be in heat again. Probably Feb or March, and during finals week so as to be as difficult as possible for me. That is kind of how they plan things anyway. We will have patellas and hearts and eyes done by then on all of them. If march pups will be ready in maybe July, if february then June. It just is going to be how the girls plan it.

You could always try RatBones, the rattie rescue. They have lots of puppies/doggies that need homes. And I think they'll ship.

Rat Bones ships as does Rat Terrier ResQ. My Sheila came from Texas to NorCal from Rat Bones.

Check with Susan Turner at Companion Kennels. I have known her for years and she has some of the best RT's in WA. UKC Top 10 dogs.

Thanks!  Do you have Susan Turner's contact info?  I can't seem to find her website.

Also, do you know Georgia at Clearbrook Kennels?

Or Kristen, have you contacted them?  They have a litter coming late spring/early summer.  Just wondering if anyone knows them or has gotten a dog from them.

Happy New Year all - I just found this site. We have a fantastic 3 year old Rat Terrier, Lucca, who is funny, mellow, was beyond easy to train and is a very gentle loving guy. We got  him from Clearbrook Kennels here in Washington.  The kennels are large, clean with lots of grass to run about on, her home is right there. The pupples were taken into her home to play & were quite socialized by weaning.  Georgia was most kind and professional and we are now looking to purchase a second ratty from her.  Cheers!  Em

Yeah, that would be perfect. But when I emailed Georgia she told me that all her 'toys' had retired and that every so often she'll get a pupthat grows to less than 10 lbs, but it wasn't the usual. I'm still keeping her in mind though, I'm on her waiting list in case a small pup comes along
