We have a rat terrier that has to go. we dont have the time that she needs and she is showing it by destroying everything. we have done all we can to make this work but it isnt. i dont want to take her to the aspca but i will have no choice, i am hoping that someone here may want to take her into their heart and give her what she needs. i do love her but we cannot afford to replace anymore things that she destroys.

What part of the country do you live in? There might be a rat terrier rescue in the area.

New Rattitude, Ratbones, Ratterrier Resq (are three that I googled for the USA).

Since this board is frequented by rattie lovers, I would have thought instead of these short burst sentences you would give more details about your dog that you love (such as age, weight, location, highlight some good qualities and upload or post a picture). Instead we have no info, no picture not even some of her good qualities. In reading just your post why would anyone want to adopt her.

Do your dog that you love some justice, make a real effort rather than become one of "those" people who dump their dogs in the SPCA. You have at least 6,076 members to appeal to

I agree, you have told us nothing about her. How old is she? Do you crate her when no one is home? Has she been spayed? Is she house trained?

What did you expect when you got a dog? They are like children, you have to supervise them when they are in your house. I have two and believe me up until they were 2 years old they destroyed several things (even some things when they were older). It was always my fault because I left them unsupervised. These dogs are very sensitive to the owner's moods and if you're upset they are too. Please don't take her to a shelter. Spend some time trying to find a rescue group or put some effort into finding her a good family to go to.

My answers are short do to being short on time, not feelings.
I saved her from a breeder. she was already a year old and wasnt trained. my wife came here when we first got her and read all the how toos. we got a crate. and it work for awhile.
We really dont want to get rid of her, but we are not home enough. we have a boxer mix whos is trained completely but training our eva has not gone well.
we have not gotten her fixed yet but planned too. we change toys and she has plenty of them.
my wife has ocd so the house is clean! nothing is left out of place for long. even our 3 yr old knows to put her things away. but its gotten to the point of her snatching things off tables. just to chew.

I know she can be a great dog given the chance. we are looking into maybe a trainer. or a muzzle.
I know my wife would be happy to keep her. She thinks of her pets like children and she would be very unhappy to give her away.
what can i do??? Im trying!

Could you invest in an xpen? I'm thinking of getting another one for Jubal, even though he's past puppyhood, so I don't have to crate him when we leave. He hates it so bad that he starts being pitiful as soon as he sees me getting ready to go off. (In his case, he's only indirectly destructive. My biggest worry with him is eating things that are indigestible.)

Anyway, if you get one that's tall enough so she can't jump or climb out, and put her in there with a bully stick or some other long-lasting chew, that might keep her out of trouble. I know it's only treating the symptoms, but it'll buy you some time to figure out what's really going on with her and address the problem.

If it turns out that you just can't keep her, please contact one of the rat terrier rescues. I have no personal experience with ratties in shelters, but I've heard that they don't present well and don't have much of a shot at being adopted. I believe it, based on what I know of my little guy. It would break my heart to think of him cowering alone in a cage, in a place like that, for the rest of his life (even if that was only a few days).

My husband and I live in Pueblo, Colorado. He is retired, and we have a one-acre yard that is grassed. We have two pot bellied pigs, six dogs and one cat. All of our animals have come to us needing a home. We have a Fox Terrier who is 2 and a Rat Terrier who is 3 months. We would welcome your dog and give her a great home. If you pay to fly her to Colorado Springs or Pueblo, Colorado, we will adopt her. You can contact me at sgt.stevens@comcast.net.

All I can say is please please go through a rescue, or use some of the wonderful suggestions here. Any other way of re-homing her is awful for a beloved pet. If you still need to rehome, contact me through PM and even the Canadian rescue might take her in (which I am part of). However going through their e-mail that is linked on their sites is the most secure and trustworthy method. I am sure you know all that, just stating the obvious.

Try these rescues:

www.ratbonerescues.com     I know they may be short on foster homes but also have a GAP program, where you keep your dog, get her fixed and up to date on vaccines and put her for adoption through their website.  These are great people with lots of love for ratties, the problem is that most rescues are overloaded with so many being dumped now a days. Regardless they will try to help you if they can and have the space in a foster home. Or like I said, fix your female and contact them about the GAP program, which is Guardian Assistance Placement but you keep your dog, you take pics and write a bio, which will have to be much more detailed than you have given here if you really want to see her adopted.

If you can, PLEASE try to find a way to keep your dog. You have no idea how much it hurts them when they are taken from the only family they have known and loved. They truly grieve, sometimes so bad that they will die of their grief.

Here are some more links I found:

www.ratterrierresq.com

www.newrattitude.org

www.americanratterrier.com

I truly hope you can keep your dog and find ways to help her. Fooey is great for spraying on things she chews to stop this behaviour. Go get some really strong Nyla Bones, the heavy duty ones for powerful chewers. Chicken flavor is great, DO NOT get the felixable ones as they are extremely dangerous to dogs that are powerful chewers like ratties. They can and will chew them and try to eat them, this can cause impactions which is expensive to fix or can make them very, very sick, if not kill them if they ingest them.

We are going to try one last thing before we trry to rehome her. We going to gate off our kitchen/dinning room area. Which her and our other dog can have plenty of room. And also our bunny) we have bones she gets bored with them.
We've even got the calming dog treats for while we are away. She doesn't care for them.
Does anyone elses rat get car sick?

Thanks for the offers! If this doesn't work I hope the offer will be still available.

My rattie/chi mix Tucker used to get car sick. If we were in the car for at least 45 minutes, he'd get sick and throw up. The more trips we took, the better this got.
I hope you work things out with your girl and you can keep her.

if you can't seem to work things out for her in your home and don't feel comfortable giving her to someone else PLEASE, PLEASE, I am begging you to find a NO KILL shelter to surrender her to. Make sure you ASK them flat out!!! You wouldn't want that for her.
I volunteer with a dog rescue in NJ and we are always getting dogs from no-kill shelters down south and our surrounding areas who are on the kill list sometimes slated to be killed THAT very afternoon.
Good luck. I hope she settles down. but I also have an 18month old rattie girl who is crazy and doesn't sound much different than your Eva. I find her chewing things and wonder where she got that from. She will eat, or try to eat anything she can get her mouth on. It is frustrating at times and can be exhausting but maybe some day she'll calm down a notch.
Kongs are a great time killer for her. You can freeze peanut butter or plain natural yogurt in them. Bully sticks are also something that can keep her really busy and satisfy that chewing desire. I get the six inch odor free bully sticks and it keeps her busy for an ENTIRE hour.
Good luck and I hope that Eva is able to stay with you.

I hope we can work something out as well. I will do my best to make sure is never killed.
I found a 3ft gate. hopefully that will help. She goes through moods I guess. we go months with her being sooo good not eating anything. then she goes crazy and destroys anything and everything.
We have about 20 toys and 3 bones. which we rotate. Because they get bored.

We also have a cage.
Do any of you think that if she gets fixed that might help. I feel like a first time parent here. I never thought id have so much trouble with a dog.
I blame her 1st owner. she didnt work with her. she had 40 rat terriers and only 7 were inside where they had human contact.
We are trying to make up for the neglect but its hard when it seems like we arent making any progress.
Thanks for your help!

Yes, getting her fixed may help calm her down a bit and is healthier for her as well, less risk of mammary or uterine cancer. A crate is great if you can crate train her, but never, ever use a crate as punishment. A crate should be their safe place, a place where they can go to get out of the main stream of whatever is happening. Go to the pet store and buy a product called Fooey. It is great for spraying on furniture and other things she chews that you don't want her to chew. It is extremely bitter, I know I got it on my lip and it was some kind of nasty, I'll tell you that for free. Make sure shoes and anything else you don't her to chew is up out of her reach and spray everything else with the Fooey. Eventually she'll get the picture and stop the chewing on things she shouldn't. When mine get something they shouldn't have I exchange it with something they can have. Just as you have to child proof a home when you have small children you have to dog/puppy proof your home for your dog. One rule of thumb, if you don't want the dog to have it make sure it put where they can't get to it. If it's furniture, spray with Fooey regularly, meaning every day to every other day to deter her chewing behaviour. It sounds like she needs lots of love and patience and training to get past her difficulties. Some obedience training would be good for her and you if you can find a good class with good trainers that are used to rat terriers and their temperment. Ratties are sensitive and can't take being yelled at or in any way mistreated, which sounds like your girl was in her former home. Work with her, be patient and loving and in time she will turn around. As a fomer foster mom for ratties I've had to deal with this kind of problem. It takes time, love and patience.

We had some behavioral problems when we brought our puppy home for the first few months. We found that his bad behavior was because he was bored out of his mind. He still has this constant need to chew .... but we make sure he has lots of chews and tennis balls. As long has he has something in is mouth, he seems to be very content. Also, on weekends, I take him everywhere I go. He's happy and content laying in the back of my car ... I have a small SUV and I put the back seat down, put in his fav blanket & a chew. He's happy to just be with me or hang in the car while I run errands. Over Christmas we took him on a long road trip and he loved it. We also have a fenced in yard and we keep him outdoors most days. He has all his outdoor toys on the patio along with his kennel. We bring it back in at night because he sleeps in it, so the kennel is his safe/comfort thing. We live on the beach, so we try to get him our running as often as possible (when animal control is not watching). Ratties do require so much attention and I found it's super important to keep the attention really positive. Our dog is awesome and so full of love. He's 6 months old now and he's very well behaved even though he sometimes acts out ... I have to keep reminding myself (and my husband) we survived toddler-hood and now he's just a teenager!

Cecil really loves riding on both my motorcycles too. We have done 600 mile trips together on my CBR1000 already. But I had some difficulties with him in the car for a while. He is doing much better now though. We just took a trip cross country, so he spent a lot of time driving in the car getting used to it. But I also have a lot of stuff piled on the seats so he sits up higher and can see better. Perhaps they do better when they sit up high where they can see better. He does great in the car now, he seems to enjoy it.
