I don't know if anyone remembers me, I own Roxie, a miniature type A chocolate sable rattie. I(No I'm not trying to get rid of my Rattie!) I've been a member here for nearly two years, but my screen name was gone again. I go to college and haven't been on much lately. I'm assuming another new server?

Tonight, I was speaking with my neighbor's daughter. She told me she would have to put her own rat terrier to sleep. When I asked what was wrong with it, she told me she couldn't find a home for it so she would have it put down! I was horrified and told her I would take her. She is a female, type a mini, spayed. She is tri color and I think she is 8 but not sure, her name is Holly.  I know my husband will kill me for taking her in, but I couldn't stand the thought of this sweet girl being put to sleep for something so stupid.  I know I will not be allowed to keep her. I thought I'd put feelers out here before contacting Ratbones. I am perfectly happy to foster her until I find her a forever home.

Any thoughts?

I will add that I'll post pictures and temperment info as soon as I get my hands on her, hopefully tomorrow.

I met her once, several months ago. I remember an overweight, but mannerly rat terrier. It seems like I remember being concerned she might have allergies, but they always feed cheapo pet food, so maybe a decent food could help her.

My son was almost in tears when I told him what was planned for Holly. I'll just have to deal with my husband when I bring her home.

Wish me luck!

how nice of you! I'm not near there, and I can't take in another pup, but I hope you can find someone good for the poor girl. Good luck!

I will be waiting for your update about Miss Holly, Poor thing,  I know that happens a lot with dogs, but we shouldn't be shocked, even children are disposable in this crazy world, I sure don't know why, but being a long time foster parent, and adopting several kids, I know this to be true.  This world has gotten itself into a sad state.

I'm trying to wait until it isn't too early in the morning to call over there to see if I can get the dog. I fell asleep worrying about it, and woke up this morning with her on my mind.

I'll post more as I learn more!

How horrible that people would do that. Hope you can get her!

I'm still waiting on the dog.

here is more on what I know.

The owner's friend has been keeping the dog (Holly) for her. It was her husband's dog, that they got for free from the paper about a year ago, so she has been getting shifted around quite a bit. Since her marriage is over, she wants nothing to do with it. The husband just left it at the friend's and said "get rid of it for me". Honestly it is probably better for the dog that she doesn't keep it. She is not a pet kind of person. From all I've heard, even before they wanted to get rid of her, she has a sweet disposition, is very mannerly and good with kids. To my way of thinking she just needs someone who actually likes dogs to give her a fair chance.

That said, my husband is on his way home from Pennyslvania today and did not hit the roof when I told him about it. However, he said he remembers her and "didn't like something about her". Whatever!

I remember her from a visit several months ago when she was at my neighbors house and she sat curled up in my lap sweet as could be. They wouldn't let her in the house, because they don't think animals should be allowed in the house. Yet she is housebroken. I am itching to go get her, but the friend is apparently at work so I will have to wait until tonight.

Do you think it would overwhelm Holly to take her to a groomer for a bath and nail trim when I do get her? I usually groom all my own dogs myself, but I want her to be as relaxed as possible as she adjusts to my home and don't want her first impression of me to be the crazy lady that assaulted her with a bath and nail trimming!

this is very tempting...... . and very tempting to make a small road trip to visit relatives and maybe to see about this dog... *sigh*
I am talking to my darling husband about it........ Don't want to stir up trouble but at the same time..... I kow how you feel...

I am willing to foster .... I can't stand the thought of someone putting this dog down just because they don't want her... grrrrr.....

Sounds like Holly just needs someone to love her forever... Keep us posted...

OH and let us Hoosiers get together someday for a meetup... Paul and Barb live fairly close too..

No PM has arrived yet, is it still down?

i think it'd be great to see some of the other rattie people on here.

It's a relief to know there are others willing to foster too, in case something goes wrong. I've been waiting impatiently all day to bring her hoe. i even offered the owner a ride to go get her, because she said she couldn't afford the gas. I have a feeling I have sucker written all over my forehead. i know she ddidn't even run an ad in the paper.

I sent you a private e-mail thru here... I don't know if that is working as well,

My husband is wondering,  can Holly be left alone in the house?  for an example while I go to school and hubby goes to work?  will she be okay with that?

and I know you said that she's good with kids... is she good with little ones?  my youngest will be 4 yrs old in a few weeks...

oh, and can she get along well with other dogs?

Thanks

Mardi, you have mail!

i will post much of what I told you in case others are wondering. She is good with little ones. The current owner has a Kindergartner and a three year old. Not sure of her behavior with other dogs or when she is left out uncrated. I'll be evaluating that when I get her, soon I hope!

This has been such a long day waiting for me it is making me crazy.  I just want to get it done.

Nothing yet. I am not going to get her tonight. The owner is going to work. She knows I am taking her though, so it is only a matter of time. I hate waiting.

I'm still working out foster arrangements with the husband. Honestly, I am secretly hoping she'll click with the family and he'll cave in and let me keep her. I've wanted another rattie for over a year. It kills me to let one slip through my home like that, but I'm glad I can rescue her even if I don't get to keep her. If not there are a few fine rat-terrier.com members who are interested in her.
