This poor guy was impounded on 10/3/08 at the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter.  I believe he was hit by a car.  He is microchipped, but the microchip is NOT registered to the owner.  His impound # is A3889852 and you can call 626-962-3577 for more information.

Hi Sherry, did you find any info on him? do you know how badly hurt he is? I would foster him if he can get to me, but vet care is outrageous and this place is not rescue friendly at all! so he would need to be full vetted. poor guy looks so sad

I just wanted to give you an update on this boy. His owner has been located, but because they live in L.A. County, the dog has to be neutered before leaving the shelter and the owner is refusing.

There is Parvo, Distemper, Kennel Cough and Brown Dog Ticks, just to name a few of the diseases and nasty things crawling about that place. They've even tried to get other people to adopt this dog. I would never leave my dog in a place like that where they are pretty much guaranteed to get sick with kennel cough at the very least.

They have 10 days from 10/14/08 to get their dog before it becomes the "property" of the shelter.

SIGH!!!! Let me get this straight: He (assuming best case scenario) accidently gets loose (maybe because he isn't neutered and felt the 'need' to roam?), gets hit by a car and is injured, is taken to a shelter and left to languish in pain, found to be microchipped by his owners didn't register or keep it current so they can't be located. Finally, they are somehow located, but will not rescue him from his cell because they want him intact (which may have led to this whole awful debacle in the first place)????

Tell you what I think - I think I'm hoping he gets to go home with better owners.

I totally understand! Keep me posted if you know have foster home opening up. Actually, now that I re-read your post, this is a dog currently at the shelter and won't be adoptable for another week.

Cody is the picture you see on my Avitar and he is under the thread "Anyone in So. Cal. looking for a ratty?"

Thanks again, Wendy!

So, in a sense, the humane society is holding the dog hostage, till the owners give in and let them cut his balls off,,,? Is this dog a repeat offender? Did the humane society originally pay for him? Is he papered? I would give the owners, one more chance to make sure he does not get out. That is a little extreme. My sister in law gave in and let her little dog get neutered, and he got an infection, and died from it. If this kennel is as nasty as you are saying up above, I would not want my dog operated on at that place either.

You know I don't know all the details...if the dog has gotten out before, complaints on the owner or otherwise. I wouldn't want my dog operated on any shelter either, but I've had many fosters that have been and have had no issues. Infection is something that can happen regardless of where you get your dog fixed. Unfortunately, owners need to always watch the surgical site to make sure infection does not set in. Dogs can have reactions to the sutures if they used, if the surgical site gets wet or the dog licks the site or simply too much activity can cause infection and yes, surgical equipment that is used on more than one dog i.e. in some shelter situations. There a lot of variables. I feel really bad about your sisters dog - that would be devastating. I just hope the owners get him out of there.

Sad to report...this boy who's name was Frankie was found dead in his kennel at the shelter on Tuesday. The owners never came for him...Best Friends was going to transport him up to Utah that day, but I'm only guessing here, that because he was hit by a car, he probably had internal injuries and as a result passed away. They have scheduled a necrospy to try to determine the cause of death.

Oh my....I can't believe the shelter, knowing he had been hit, did not look into his injuries and at least provide minor treatment.  Yes, the owners shoud have came and got him but I honestly feel the shelter has a hand to play in his death as well.  Just terrible...

OMG! If he had internal injuries, neutering sure would not have been a good idea at this time. He would have died sooner. I cannot believe that if the shelter, had him in their care, they let him suffer with internal injuries from being hit by a car, without getting him medical attention. That is gross negligence on the part of the shelter. they were in such a hurry to neuter him, but failed to give him proper medical care for his injuries! AAAAARRRGGH!

Many government run dog pounds do not provide any type of medical care for animals brought into their facilities, most often due to a lack of funds to do so. Of course it's not "right", but it is what it is. Frankly, in my opinion, this is completely the fault of his owners. Certainly this dog was not a beloved pet, else they would have gotten him out immediately - neutering or not. Instead, they allowed him to die slowly and alone. No "good" owner does such a thing - in any circumstance, not even if he was a high-value stud dog from a reputable breeder....which, imo, is VERY hard to believe, else his microchip would have been up-to-date.

RIP, little Frankie, certainly you are in a better place.

OMG. How horrible....that poor little dog. The owner should have done whatever necessary to get him out of there...especially since knowing he had been hit by a car!!! Yes, there might have been a risk of infection with the neutering but they could have watched for that and taken him to THEIR vet right away.

And do we KNOW that they didn't want him neutered because of a risk of infection? Sounds like they just wanted to keep him a "stud". In the end it was at the expense of his life.

People disgust me sometimes.

HORRIFIC story...wish I hadn't read it!

That poor baby took THREE weeks to die...? The shelter will spend the Vet time on neutering/necropsies, but NOT on a simple Xray on a dog that was obviously injured?!

Makes me sick.

I saw one episode on An Planet on the dog cops...in Ariz I believe it was...the dog catcher was required to, on the spot, euthanize injured dogs who had no collars on...not certain if she checked them for chips(hope she did!). What a sad job. But they didn't have the vet funding for injured strays...even if only a broken bone.

Can only imagine things are going to just get much worse for any shelter/animal control with the way things are going economically....a lot are losing their county funds or having them cut.

Poor babies.
