The volunteer who is responsible for busting the mill called me today on her way home from the shelter.  Every single animal was adopted from that shelter today!  Over 200 people were waiting for the shelter to open this morning so they could adopt the dogs, and when they ran out of dogs, the cats were all adopted.  There is still one rattie that they are holding for evaluation.

In total, there are only seven ratties that are going to rescues, with 6 nursing pups.

Here is the news story from this morning:

I would expect some rebound - but at least they will be better able to staunch the flow of incoming.

I agree Amy, I'm so glad that they were all rescued~ but they do deserve to have a great life in a loving home. Seems pretty fast to start adopting them out. I would've thought they needed to be checked out a little longer, health issues and all...spaying, neutering, shots, etc... God bless those poor babies and hope that they get the love they each deserve!

Dang that was quick! I sure hope the adopters were checked out thoroughly in the rush to adopt.

Just imagine what all those Ratties are experiencing for the first time tonight. Amazing things they never knew existed. Warm soft beds and loving hands for starters.

I thought I had read that they waived the adoption fees for these ratties too. Hopefully the money saved by these folks from having to pay the adoption fee will go towards the care of the ratties. I suspect some may come back to the shelter once the newness wears off and people realize these lil guys need more work than they expected, that always happens. But at least for now, they are not in feces filled cases or in shelter limbo.

BTW: It is amazing how they got adopted so quikly. A local rescue just got back a week or so ago from a puppy mill back east filled with Beagles. I think they brought back over 60 dogs (?) They got a lot of press. But I'm sure they are nowhere near getting those beagles homes as fast as these ratties were adopted.

Hi,

We adopted a precious Rat Terrier today from the Animal Shelter that were rescued from the puppymill in Newton NC. I wish I could post a picture, but do not have one yet. Yes, the fee was waived. We took our puppy directly to the Vet and to the groomer to have her nails clipped. She is very shy and confused, but it is such a joy to see her smelling the grass everything else outside!! Right now is asleep in the family room next to my husbands feet. I know she will her entry in the her new world will quick, we have fallen in love with her. My husband said we should name her Lucky, but I think we are the lucky ones. To make everyone feel better about the people who adopted the Ratties, we stood in line to complete the paperwork with some of the most animal loving people you would ever want to meet.

CBaugh,

Many many welcomes!! If you need help figuring out anything about this site, there are lots of folks willing to help and several great threads. Many blessings on your head for adopting a rescue.

Have you had a rat terrier dog before? If not, you are in for a joyful adventure. I adopted a puppy mill dog this past year. She is 8 and when she could no longer breed as full in terms of number of pups, etc, the "owner" dropped her off at a kill shelter.

When she got to me, she was very sick with peridontal disease. She had to have 7 upper teeth removed and after a stint on antibiotics, pain meds and anti-inflamatories, she is now a vibrant and full of joy and energy dog. Everyday I see her blossom out more and more.

Her first weeks here, she didn't know how to play, she didn't know what to do with toys and she was a bit confused about everything. Now she has lots of toys, loves to go to the doggy day care and spa in our area and is becoming a real "people" person of a dog.

It is amazing what a little love will do for these puppy mill dogs. Isn't it great when you meet LOTS of animal loving folks!?!

As has been said on this thread, please join in, we love lots of photos and stories, etc. Can't wait to see pics of your new addition and hear what you named her.

Thank you again for reaching out and rescuing a rat terrier!!

Much Aloha,
Cheryl

Hello cBaugh,

CongRATulations!  I'm so happy that you adopted one of the mill dogs, and then came here to let us know.

Please, can you tell us if there was a screening process?  I'm really curious about the shelter scene.

Thank you for adopting!

Thank you for giving one of the PM dogs a good home.  With time and lots of love, the shy and confused little girl will turn into a more confident, happy go lucky little girl.  It's a whole new world to her, and you will be able to see it with her.

Here is a good website with several articles about the whole situation from when they found the dogs to the day they were adopted. There is a picture of a lady holding a beautiful RT that she adopted too.

Congats CBaugh (any relation to Savannah Baughs???) on your good luck!!!

Cannot wait to see pics of your new family member!!!!!

Absolutely AMAZING  is that  community's turn out!!! Goes to show you they are QUITE a special breed!!!

Good article Morgan..thanks!
(I am sending that article to the Rainsville, Ala  newspaper...maybe it'll show them how a community CAN help out!! Can only hope?)

Noticed from the article that ALL the dogs have been Vetted...shots, check-ups.

One old gurl with no teeth was adopted!!!!...Just so wonderful for  all these poor pups!

Sherrie is a true Heroine, as are all the rescue groups who stepped in!

Even the town's Humane Society took 30 plus! Just amazing!

What a great ending to a tragic story!!!

Like everyone here, I do hope these new families get their pups fixed! I noticed it's only $65 thru that shelter. It will certainly help in their socialization. Perhaps the local rescues will offer to help the new families with suggestions and assistance in that???? So some don't end up back in there?

And the Moms with puppies are all in Rescues! YAY!!!! Looks like there are gonna be a lot of "Nursery Babies" in all the Rattie Rescues!!!

What an AMAZING happy ending!!!  I'm sure, as others said, that some of these puppies will be returned to the shelter once people begin to realize the work that comes along with a new puppy. But, I think they did the best they could with the situation and limited resources.  Just think...all of those babies enjoyed a nice warm night with loving owners last night...much better than their previous situation, I'm sure of it.
