Sherri sent this to the New Rattitude group late last night:
Hi Guys ...
I'm home ... or, rather, we're home. 137 rat terriers were seized. Only
5 were diagnosed with such health problems that they were to be put
down. One was a very old gentleman with no teeth and serious gum
disease. I brought a friend with me to help at the shelter, and she
rescued him. He's home with her now forever. Make no mistake, most of
the ratties have some stage of gum disease. Some of them have serious
problems with their feet as toenails had curled under and into the pads,
and some have infections in their feet due to walking on feces-encrusted
wire cages (chicken wire coops). All but one haven't even offered to
nip. The one that did nip was scared out of his tiny mind (it was a
puppy of the toy variety).
There are at least four mommies-to-be that will be delivering within the
next couple of days up to the next couple of weeks. There were three
momma ratties there, one is 7 years old, one is 9 years old, and one is
10 years old. The 10 year old delivered her babies during the seizure.
One baby was doa, the other, a tiny white baby, seems to be holding his
own. The nine year old has three babies of about a week or two old. The
7 year old has two babies of about 3 to 4 days old. It's insane. There
are sooo many puppies there ... as many males (intact) as there are
females (intact). These three mommies and their tiny babies are here
with me at home now.
The shelter is desperate for fosters homes and people that will give
them homes. These are definite rat terriers - both A's and B's. Please
contact the shelter if you can help. I will help pull. This shelter is
located in Newton, NC. The phone number(s) there are: 828-465-8228 or
828-464 7687.
I took the liberty of taking several photos in-between helping vet the
dogs. You can see these at:

If you can help, but you need me to pull, please let me know. And thank you.

| OMG. I am just horrified. I want to punch something(someone) and sob at the same time. I wish with all my heart that I could do something. I will pray for all of those there and around the country that are trying to muster the resources and people needed to help them all. Big, huge HUGS to Sherri for being a real hero and to her friend who is going to see that the elderly dog in poor condition dies with love. |

| Not saying this will happen but if I wanted to permantely take in one of the puppies what would I do? Could it be possible? I am not a fostering type person as my daughter gets way to attached(me too). But since we are looking for another rattie maybe a possibility? Getting it up here would also be something I have to consider on how to do. |

Stormy's mom,
The pups won't be ready for adoption for about 12 weeks. We will begin taking applications when they are 6 weeks old, and will post an announcement here.
Thank you so much for wanting to help! |

Sue is absolutely right on...there are so many ways to help besides fostering (which IS vital of course). The contact person at Catawba County Animal Services is Joy, phone number: 828-465-8228 or 828-464 7687. THAT is where offers to help should go unless one can foster. In that case, contact one of the rat terrier rescue groups or any all-breed rescues in that area, and they will make the arrangement to pull the dogs and get them into foster homes. The most important thing right now is to place the dogs in foster homes. There will be serious rehabilation needed for these kids and medical issues to contend with. Once they are placed with rescues we can access what is needed for their care, transport, etc. Thank you! |

| My only issue is the upfront cost of fostering. I would take a dog in a heartbeat but these dogs could (and probably will) require a ton of vet care. |

Sarah, if you could foster for Ratbone, and you can meet me in Utica, I will take the dog you foster to MY vets........ and return the dog to you... Dr. Bart allows us to carry a balance, so that's not an issue. You won't need to pay up front... the only thing you would expend is $$ for food. You will get 6 months of free heartworm preventative once the dog tests HW-

Michelle in Albany's getting 2 mommas and 10 babies... I am taking a little girl... would you prefer a male or female? I'm not sure when a transport is being set up, but soon, I'm guessing.
We can have your dog come to me first, and I'll get any vetting done, then we can set up a time to meet in Utica... if there comes a time where the dog needs to see the vet, call me and we'll set something up...
When there's a will there's a way!! THANK YOU!! |

It doesn't matter to me which rescue gets them. All I know is that Phil and I will set up a room as a nursery, we are wanting to foster one of the pregnant females. Whether through Ratbone Rescues or New Rattitude, doesn't matter, just as long as I can help at least one with pups from my home state. For me it's all about the dogs. |

But hey the more we try the more we reach. I'm so pleased that all the rescues are working together on this. I have sent my info to both Caroline and Sherri about what I can do to help. I also know that not only donations to the rescue groups but also the shelter takes monetary donations as well and their address is Catawba County Animal Shelter 100 C South West Blvd Newton, NC 28658 Aloha, cheryl |
