Oh, poor baby- so glad that you went back for him. I don't understand people and why they would hurt an innocent little animal??? Is he OK? Are you gonna keep him?? Makes me sick to even think about what would've happened to him if you didn't go back and save him... |

| It is really hard to find places that is dog friendly then once you do they want like 200-500 per pet if they ruin the place. So no its impossible finding places that take dogs, cats are easy. Dogs are another story all together! |

| That is so horrible. I can't believe some people and to lie to her child!! Poor little guy and so glad you went and to him. Our cat was one someone threw away. They think that because you live in the country they can live on mice! Yea right! Was even worse when we had the dairy. Cats on a farm have a horrible life! They usually die within a year of being born! We have had rescued and abused Old English Sheepdogs and Newfoundlands. I hate the way people abuse their animals. |

(i used to be registered under "angus & me" but i forgot all my info, so i re-registered. pictures on this new screen name will be added soon. )
i just have to preach because this is my pet peeve ( well one of them, anyway ) number one, animals are not disposable- they are not meant for our whims, only to be discarded when not convenient. number two, this situation is one example where getting a dog - or any other innocent and helpless animal - should only happen once you have determined that you are truly able to take on the responsibility.
i apologize for going off, but the main reason i logged on today was to maybe talk about a rattie i just had to go save from starving....... a person i knew admitted to moving and leaving the poor baby. she had NO BUSINESS with him in the first place - then when it wasnt convenient she left him behind. her son was heart-broken and as she lied to him and told him they could go get sammy back once they got a house i realized she was never going to have anyone go back and get him. she told me her friend was going to "run out there and get him until she could keep him" blah blah blah...
i knew she probably never even asked anyone to go get him, so after 2 days i drove out there and he was still there - skin and bones - no food or water - outside with no shelter for days with severe storms rolling thru everyday - and the baby was still scratching at the door of the abandoned house!! he was still waiting for the &^%@#$ to come let him in or come back for him.
i brought him home to my other 3 dogs and one cat and its a little hectic, but i couldnt leave him there. i told myself i would find him a home but when he looks at me he just looks so hopeful - looking for some kindness - its so sad. but i guess its a happy ending for him anyway... however..... all 3 of my ratties and my cat and my gorgeous aussie are from either the street, the shelter, or someone who just "couldnt take care of them" ..... THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE YOU GET A DOG OR CAT !!!!!
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you!!! I have purchased a bigger car...just to accomodate my 3 dogs on a trip up the ALCan.... I am actually in the process of buying a house with a bigger yard so my dogs can run... (I am buying the house for my own selfish reasons too but the dogs are playing a factor in the desicion too) I hate when people say they cant take a dog (or cat) with them because they are "MOVING" that is BS......I moved with 3 dogs and we are a single income military family! I have gotten pets before that I decided after I had them for a while that I did not have the desire to have any longer. (like fish or a lizard) but my dogs are just as much my babies as the human kids... and the dogs listen better most of the time that the humans do!!!!!
Anyway sorry to get on the soap box again!

BTW if 200-500 dollars for a pet deposit is too much for you to pay then you should not get a pet. that is part of the deal..... when you look into buying a pet or adopting you should look at ALL the aspects of owning one..... the possible vet bills the shots and preventative healthcare cost... the food and toys and training and time and YES weather it will cost you money to have the pet in your OWN apartment.... lots of places have deposits and separate pet rent.....I know it SUX but its life.... the reason that there is a deposit and rent in most apartments is because MOST (not all) people have pets and the destroy the building carpets and walls etc... and this is because the pet is not being stimulated properly. he or she is not being given the level of "attention" they need most people who reside in apts work allot.. adn the pet goes thru separation anxiety// barking digging chewing.....the apartments are basically protecting themselves. If I were a slum lord I would do the SAME thing......(dont take the slum lord comment offensively. I dont mean that people here are living in a slum) any way... if you want a pet you should be willing to pay ALL the cost involved in having them even if it means a 500 dollar deposit!!!! Sorry that is just my oppinion!!! |

i was going to "find him a home".... that was about 3 weeks ago. i want to keep him and i am trying to work him into our routine... if a miracle rat terrier lover comes by and can prove he /she is worthy i would consider it.
i apologize is my earlier post sounded too harsh. it was not intended as a personal attack on anyone.... just wanted to say my peace.

This kind of thing just breaks my heart. Bless you for going to check on him and bringing him home. It just makes me so mad that a person would do this - I agree you should be absolutely SURE before getting any pet - but when things happen and you can't keep them - find another home for them! Take them to a no-kill shelter! There are options and there is NO excuse for abandoning a dog!

The part about "still scratching at the door" got to me too... I could not imagine the emotional hurt and feeling of abandonment that little dog must have felt.. Does have feelings too. Bless you for rescuing him. |

Many years ago I adopted an abandoned dog (and found a home for his companion). I worked in an industrial area and the two pups (they were both about 6 months old, but not littermates) were left there on a corner in front of a building under construction, with a bag of fast food, in the pouring rain!!! I just do not understand this kind of callousness. I'm sure their puppy-cuteness had worn off and they didn't want the hassle anymore. These two guys sat out there for a whole day and night (that I know of- I saw them first on Monday and picked them up on Tuesday morning when they were still there), anxiously watching each passing car, patiently awaiting their "masters" return! Our dog, Sol, was a sheperd/collie/golden retriever mix. He became the best dog ever, sweet and loyal, he had a long (14 years) and happy life with us. |

| It is so sad and I am so glad that I don't have to rent anymore. I had pets when renting and it was not always easy, I took them with me when I moved and found home for others. Somehow I kept ending up with the abandoned doggies. There is no perfect solution sometimes though. If family won't take them or you can't find a home a shelter is better than nothing. I feel very bad for all the dogs that died because of Katrina and being abandoned because the rescuers would not allow pets to go with their people. Thats what worries me most, why can't pets go with their people? I have seen homeless people that would not go into the shelters because they could not take their pets with them! They could freeze to death in this climate but they won't leave the dog outside. Now if that can happen here, and the pets abandoned by Katrina happened here, What good are we doing? I know maybe I am not making good sense but I would rather be dead myself than have no dogs. Why aren't their shelters avalible for people with pets? |

Hey Bokilink and michel,
I agree with you both. Our dog is a loved member of our family, with strict rules and boundaries. My wife and I also lucked out as we rent out a house. Small but a nice big fenced-in yard and a great landlord, and at a great price for the area. On a side note, my wife's family originates from Northern New Jersey, city folks. As much as I love them, my in-laws consider a pet just another mouth to feed. |
