On Thursday morning of last week I received a picture from a friend of mine of a little rat terrier who had ended up in the Davidson County Animal Shelter (located about 10 mins from my office).  She sent me this because she knows I love rat terriers, and of course the intent was to play on my heart strings... mission accomplished successfully!

So I decided when my meeting was over I was going to get him... and had decided I would just deal with hubby after the fact.  So that afternoon, I announced to my supervisor that I was going to the shelter to get this little dog, and she asked if she could ride with me.  (She has a little female westie who will be 2 in November).  So the two of took off to the shelter.

Upon our arrival and inquirng about the rat terrier, we were informed that he had been adopted that day and had just been neutered and was still heavily sedated.  I have to admit... I was relieved.  But my supervisor and I both spotted a west highland terrier in one of the cages.  Well guess who adopted the westie?  You got it.. my supervisor... haha

He's approximately two years old and had not been neutered.  So they are neutering him and she's to pick him up tomorrow.  She's so excited.  The dog was very social, and calm in the animal control environment.  He had been found roaming the streets with a red collar and leash on him, but no identification.... and after two weeks of not having been claimed, he went up for adoption.

So... the rat terrier got adopted... and my supervisor adopted the westie, and has named him "Murphy".  Her female westie is named Maggie.

I'm excited for her... this is a story with a happy ending!

Your supervisor was meant to be at that shelter and meet that little Westie! Funny how life goes isn't it.

I just now saw this! Nora, you were instrumental in saving another doggie! One of my best friends has a grand-dog that is a westie. They are cuties.

This story truly does have a nice ending. Murphy has fit in nicely with her other Westie, and I'm told he's much better behaved than her own Maggie is. LOL

This dog obviously belonged to someone. (after all.. he had a red collar and leash on when they found him roaming the city streets). He heels perfectly when walking on lead... is totally housebroken and crate trained. Already knows several basic commands. It's pretty unbelievable actually. She truly did luck out with this little dog. For the life of me I can't imagine the owners making no attempt to claim him!

I prefer the "wash-n-wear" dogs. Just can't get into the dogs that need grooming, but that's just me.

I wonder if something medical or accidental happened to his owner when they were out on a walk?

I don't know. I've wondered and wondered about. I could tell when we visited the animal control center that this was no typical "stray". He was WAY too well behaved. My supervisor and her husband have fallen in love with him. I guess the bottomline (important thing) is that he has a wonderful new home, eh? I guess we'll never know what his real story is.
