Sorley (his name means "summer traveler" in Norse) went home yesterday. He had traveled down here to me in SE Georgia from an animal control in Walker Co., GA. Yesterday we had several amazing transport volunteers (thank you Cheryl!!!! You're amazing!) who drove him up into North Carolina where his daddy met him and took him all the way home to Pennsylvania.
I know everyone sees the pleas for help here in the Rescue Forum...home visits, transports, donations, etc. but I wanted to share with you just one example of a what YOUR help accomplishes.
See, Sorley came to me 5 weeks ago a very scared, untrusting little rattie who would scream in fear when he felt the leash around his legs or neck.....and who would pee in fear at the slightest thing. He would even urninate each time I put the leash on him no matter how matter-of-fact I was. He was not housetrained and apparently had been tied out somewhere as his hair never grew right in a ring around his lower neck. By the time he left me he greeted the leash with wiggles of pleasure instead of submissive urination. And he loved to go on walks with tail high and tongue lolling, jogging along on a loose leash. And he learned that people give great belly rubs and he learned to run and jump on his people in joy just to see them. We didn't do anything special....we just fed him and exercised him and loved on him like he was one of our own.
But yesterday!! Yesterday a wonderful family who have a small farm in Pennsylvania took him home. He will have fields to run in and a Jack Russell buddy named Petey to play with. He will have a barn to catch mice in and groundhogs and rabbits to chase. Sorley's world has changed completely from being a stray just 6 weeks ago! His new mommy has toys and a bed just for him.....and the last email I got was that his daddy was feeding him bits of McDonald's french fries on the drive home.
So please....don't despair when you see all the pleas for help. You can only help where/when you can and that's enough! I just wanted you all to see THE REASON we do this....the big payoff when a neglected, mistreated rat terrier like Sorley GOES HOME. |

Ok... I'm in tears. Tears of happiness because there are people like you, Mary Beth... and several others on this site... who donate their time, money and other resources to do the worthwhile work that you all do with these dogs. I know that this site is a wonderful resource for dogs that need transporting or re-homed...and for people who are looking for a new addition to their family. I loved reading this story, Mary Beth. |

| Tears here as well. What a story. Everyone that helps in any way -- you are all my heroes. As someone who would have a really tough time helping out right now, you are my inspiration. Someday I hope to be able to do more and be part of the process in getting these ratties to wonderful families like Sorley's new one. |

| We love hearing about the miracles all the people involved in rescuing and fostering do with this precious babies. And we love seeing pictures of how much they improve in confidence, weight, and coat condition after a little TLC and attention. |

Hey mary Beth! What a wonderful story. I just got through posting on your other thread about Sorley and I and our leg of the trip. He is such a sweetie! While not everyone can do everything, we can ALL do something. It may be a simple as demonstrating with your own animals what a good responsible pet owner is and does. When you walk you dogs, pick up after them, train them to be good canine citizens, you have done a lot to help. Even if you just talk to one person about the challenges of overpopulation, strays or the rescue work that you know about, that will help a lot. Education is going to be and is the MAJOR key to tackling the challenges of overpopulations of animals, strays and animal neglect, abuse and cruelty. We don't have to give tons of money, esp of we don't have it!! LOL. We don't have to drive transports or be fosters. We can be ambassadors for our pets by talking with folks, being knowledgable ourselves about things like quality food, health care, the benefits of spay/neuter and the dispelling of myths about spay/neuter. We can also talk about how to be responsible if we do have intact animals. We help when we show by our actions that our animals get loving homes, aren't allowed to roam the neighborhood, are seen happily walking on leashes with their owners enjoying being together. So I want everyone to think about all they do and to NOT feel bad if you aren't able to do more right now. You will be amazed at what all you are doing and as you travel your life's journey, you will find many more ways to help! Thanks to all on this site and others who by the way they care for their animal companions are showing the world what responsible pet ownership is all about. Mahalo! Thanks!! |

People like you Mary Beth and those that foster are truly angels. You save lives each and everyday and I am so happy and thankful to read stories such as this. For all the people who mistreat their animals it's so refreshing to read the success stories. These little dogs can bounce back so fast with love and patience. Those who made poor Sorely fear the leash have no idea on what they are missing out on, at least you know the love of a dog and make a difference each and every day. |
