I've taken the rescue's word that the dog I'm interested in is a rat terrier, but my husband's been asking me how I (or they) *know* that's what it is. There is such a varience in looks within the breed he's looking to me for more information and I don't have more than trust and my own eyes anyway.
Is there anything else to tell him? |

| Mainly personality traits, I guess. Look in the "You Might Be a Rat Terrier If" and see if any of the stories fit him. Also, post pictures for us to see. |

Well, not having him yet I can't speak to the personality, but these are the pictures I have (if they'll be helpful).

He's about knee-high (under 18 inches) and I don't have a weight. Like I said, Husband is asking more questions than I have answeres for, so I'll understand if someone says this isn't an (on-line) answerable question. |

He's adorable! Looks rattie to me!!! These pups are all so varied in their appearance, it is hard with a rescue to know for sure. But, if you think he's the right dog for you, does it really matter? I'm not sure of Savanna parentage, she was a stray. She just looked like a rattie, not sure exactly what she is, but she acts like all the others here, sooo......close enough for me! Good luck. |

| Looks like he is at least part rattie. He looks kind of large, but you really can't tell from the pictures. He sure is a cutie...I say it doesn't really matter anyway! |

he looks like a rattie to me. if he's around 18" he may be a large standard...my Decker girls are 16" but their dad and male littermates are 18" so maybe somewhere between 18-25 lbs...just a guess. large for ratties? not really...my Molly is 32 lbs...truly a "Decker Giant" |

We're waiting for the final word, but we're one of two final candidates for the dog (I suppose I keep posting b/c there's nothing else I can do while I wait ). DH just wanted to know for himself. He's bending *way* back just to agree to a dog, period, so I try to help him with any of his questions.
He's a good, good man. |

Looks like a rattie... It's hard to tell them from small fox terriers, from what I understand, but generally people confuse them with JRTs. But JRTs tend to have stouter muzzles and ratties have round eyes, while JRTs have more oval eyes... But mainly it's a personality thing. I got Sophie from a shelter and they thought she was a jack-rat, but the more I looked into it the more I could see NO JRT in her at all. I think it was just that the shelter people had never seen a rattie with button ears... I hope you get the pup! And if not, that you will find the one truly meant for you! |

| he looks rattie to me. I don;t know what rescue group you are working with, but maybe you can ask how they know he's pure RT? Depending on how they got him they might know- and they might not. But whether he is or isn't shouldn't matter as much as whether or not the dog is the right dog for you and visa-versa. good luck! |

| What rescue group are you working with? Do they specialize in Rat Terriers? Your boy looks like a rattie with a tail to me. I don't see a toy fox terrier or jack russell - the two common ones for confusing with rattie. Even if he turns out to only be part rat terrier that would still make him a fabulous dog! |

The rescue is multi-breed, and when I asked how they knew they looked at me like I had two heads (albeit nicely) and said he *looked* like one. The only weight they offered was "under 20 pounds." Still waiting on the final word. I hope to know in the next day or two, as the last (other) home visit was to be done last night. I'm wondering how much I want this to wait so long... |

After rescueing three dogs, I still wonder what breeds are in my dogs. It's not that they are more special if they are full blooded, it is just a great way to look up personality traits and prepare yourself for a particular behavior. It's great they have blood tests now; however, I think they should be cheaper and more accessible. Except, the one I came across didn't test for a specific terrier.
Good luck with the adoption. The dog is so sweet looking. What a shiney coat. It totally looks rattie to me. But, I'm new at this.
