Checked out our local shelter and a girl I talked to there showed me this sweetheart of a girl.  She is 10mos old and she is a Basenji mix (they think she's crossed with Heeler).

Her previous owners TAUGHT her to jump up on them and then if she'd scratched them with her claws they'd punch her in the face.  Unbelievable.  I believe the county took her away from the owners.  She had a horrible food allergy and was loosing alot of her fur when they got her.  They feed her a no corn diet and her fur looks so good now.  I told her I only feed my dog high quality foods and I liked the NB duck and potatoe for allergies and she agreed 100%.

When she first came there she'd sit in a corner and shake.  Now she openly goes to the door of her kennel and says hi.  We took her outside in a fenced area and played with her.  She fetched her ball and loved being outside.

Does anyone on here know anything about the Basenji breed?  I have no experience with this breed at all.

here is a picture of her though.

Are they sure it is Basenji? I get that question about Ivy all the time. (Is that a Basenji?) Very cute very sad story. The only thing I know about them is the bark-less and they are very loyal. Hunting dogs from some where I believe.

I know they don't bark...originally from Africa. They are very energetic. I've never worked with one... but I've seen a few! She's very pretty!
Are you considering her Teresa?

She's gorgeous!  My best friend has a basenji ( he is 11 now).  I don't know about the breed in general...Supposedly they don't bark mucj I think.  Saboo was very quiet and very independent, somewhat "cat like".  Strong prey drive.  But he is a sweet boy...It was funny, the dog I had at the time a rat terrier mix was super sensitive and emotional...Saboo was very even keeled, didn't show a lot of emotion, but you knew he loved you (if that makes any sense).

Me and the kids really liked her. She never barked once, even when the other dogs in her kennel were barking. She seemed somewhat aloof toward us, but we could tell she really bonded with her caretaker. She would go to her and kind of ignore us. She liked to play ball. The caretaker left us alone with her so we could she what she was like without her there. She is an active girl, but after being in a kennel all day I think she was happy to get out of it. She is horrible on a leash, pulls alot. But that isnt so much of a concern...she just needs to be worked with and probably and obedience class. Im just wondering if they are difficult to train. I dont know how people at the shelter can tell what breed a dog is or if they just go by looks and how they act and basicly guess. We are looking around right now, but we really took to her.

Description

Basenji are small, unusual, elegant, athletic dogs about the size of a fox terrier, with a smooth shiny coat of copper, red, black and tan, black and brindle. Usually with white feet and white on the chest and tip of the tail. Individuals may also sport a white facial blaze, white legs and/or a white collar. The back is level; the legs are long, and the forehead is furrowed with wrinkles, giving it a worried look. The ears are straight and open in the front and its tail is set high and curls up over and slightly to either side of the back. Its eyes are small and almond shaped. Its thighs are muscular, and it has a flat skull. The breed has a distinctive, horse-like running gait. The Basenji does not bark, but does have a lot of other unusual vocalizations. He may yodel, howl, growl or crow, depending on his mood. Unlike most other domestic breeds, which have two heats per year, the female Basenji comes into heat only once a year.

Temperament

The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog.

Height, Weight

Height: Dogs 16-17 inches (41-43 cm.) Bitches 15-16 inches (38-41 cm.)
Weight: Dogs 22-26 pounds (10-12 kg.) Bitches 20-25 pounds (9-11 kg.)

Health Problems

This breed is prone to Fanconi's syndrome (kidney problems), which must be treated the moment the symptoms are noticed. Also, they are susceptible to progressive retinal atrophy, intestinal, and eye problems.

Living Conditions

The Basenji will do okay in an apartment if it gets enough exercise. It is very active indoors and a small yard will do. The Basenji is happiest when it is kept with two or three other Basenji; they will not fight among themselves.

Exercise

The Basenji need vigorous daily exercise. They have a tendency to become fat and lazy unless the owner is consistent about it. This breed needs a long daily walk.

Life Expectancy

About 10-12 years

Litter Size

4 - 6 puppies

Grooming

The Basenji washes itself like a cat and has no doggie smell, so very little grooming is needed. This is a good dog for people with allergies. This breed sheds little to no hair.
Origin
The first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game.

Group

Southern, AKC Hound

Recognition

I LOVE the Basenji breed. I used to show my dogs (eons ago )...an  Ibizan Hound and Afghan...and my Ibizan was bred by a Basenji breeder..his dogs were incredible!

I was first introduced to the breed as a teen when I read a heartwrenching book called "Goodbye My Lady"...all about a Besenji who was lost in the Everglades and rescued.... made me cry buckets...like Ole Yeller did!

Yep...GREAT breed!

Well, hubby hasnt actually 100% agreed. But I thought if I found a dog that I really loved and showed him he'd agree. If I said flat out that I was getting another dog like it or not, well then we'd have another dog. But I want him to want one too. I want it to be our dog, not just mine because I forced the issue. All the other times we've had animals he has been on board 100%, I want it to be OUR decision not just me saying so. So Im hoping. That is why Im looking for a dog locally because he'd be more likely to say ok if he sees the dog and gets to interact with it. I will get another one....its just a matter of when!
