This adorable baby is running short of time. She tested positive for heartworms and the shelter can't afford to treat her. I'll contribute $100 to her treatment.
Read all about her here:
http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11453055
I've contacted Ratbones. The shelter she's in is in the northeast corner of Louisiana, near Arkansas and Mississippi.
If you can help her, including donating toward her heartworm treatment, please contact christyprimm@yahoo.com
Thanks for anything you can do. |

I'm curious...how do they treat heartworms in dogs? My Cat had them pretty badly when he was young and i just remember them doing bloodwork 3 times to make sure they were all gone. |

HW treatment consists of 2 series of injections of a type of cyanide (I believe) into a muscle in the leg. The first one is done, and then one 24 hours later. My Benny Ben Ben, had to go through treatment. It also depends upon how severe the infestation is... |

She is a beauty. Sadly, I'm too far away to get her out of there, but I'm willing to toss in $25 for her treatment. I'll send an email to the address you provided. Hope she can be rescued. |

I have no idea how someone could take the pups and leave the Momma... I'm guessing it's someone who just wants to sell them for $$$.... how terrible! |

I just received this message!!! She has been adopted!!! Hello Ladies, I finally reached a person with the shelter that housed the rattie, Precious Pie, the female that was being considered for euthanasia. I was telling them I was coming to retreive her into rescue. He relayed that a couple read her story; were aware of her heartworm; wanted to treat her & make her a permanent addition to their home. They drove from several hours away and adopted her Friday afternoon. YES!!!! A good ending to this story & a new beginning in a loving home for Precious Pie. Thank you, thank you, thank you for answering my emails with your support. I appreciate your kindness & dedication to the welfare of animals. Sincerely, Andi Moran |

So glad this has a happy ending! Just for future info, If the pup is young enough, many vets now reccommend just the heartworm pills, instead of the 'treatment'. Heartworm meds will kill the new 'worms' and the ones that are already there will die. It takes a while, but it works. The Heartworm 'Treatment' is very difficult on the pups. I will never put a dog through the heartworm treatment. It is crazy, almost kill your dog to cure it? Ask your Vet. |

YAY! Glad she was saved! What a great ending!
It's a shame that most shelters euthanize and don't adopt out because of heartworms.....such a curable parasite.
I have heard that dogs will go negative after being on the regular monthly preventative-treatment...maybe it IS the young that that happens to?
I wonder why more vets don't push preventative for Cats? They must not be as prone as dogs?
My cats are not on anything (except Frontline), are often outside, and 12 yrs old....and the only hacking they do is hairballs...lucky I suppose. But I have not had them tested either...... Some reason never thought about Cats and heartworms....arrgh!
