if this woman, bonnie dreher,  applies for  any  dog do not even consider. She called our rescue and was very nasty, to quote:

Please be careful if this women comes to you about a dog. SHE IS NOT NICE! She asked to see one of my dogs. I told her to make an appointment you need to be an approved adopter, please complete an application. She wrote me back all pissed off and saying she wants to meet the dog not marry it. And a bunch of other rude stuff.

I told her good luck in her search.

Just becareful she doesn't take your head off. LOL!

Just a heads up!!

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

I actually got a very nasty message from a woman who I called to do a home visit for... she had already been approved by another rescue, but the adoption fell through, but we never heard from that rescue, so we wanted to do our own home visit. I called and left a message, and when she called back I wasn't home and she freaked. She said it was easier for her to adopt her SON than it is for her to adopt a dog............... well, the rescue got back to us and she had a glowing home visit report, so we let her adopt. I was EXTREMELY apprehensive about it, but it wasn't one of my fosters what I thought didn't matter.

Come to find out, she was a PERFECT home for this dog. The dog had major issues, but this lady was patient and worked with her and now the lady's retired and the dog goes everywhere with her.

Sometimes people have bad days, I know I sure do, where I want to tell the entire world to F off. I'm like that today as a matter of fact lol.... and I'm not saying it's right for those people to behave like that, and trust me, if that lady was adopting one of MY dogs, I would have said NO FREAKING WAY... but she turned out to be a great adopter.

My parents adopted a dog from a rescue shelter and had to go thru the ringer.  It took over a month and was extremely frustrating for them.  I get that noone wants to adopt a dog out to someone who would not give the dog the best loving home but I don't think someone credit score is a valid reflection on what kind of pet parent they would be.

I had someone apply for one of mine...didn't want to "jump threw hoops" as she put it. She though if she "paid the money" then the dog should be hers without further questions. Wrong...Ratbones isn't in the business of "selling" dogs. As I spoke with the woman more I found out she also had an agressive lab (go figure!) who she was afraid would attack any volunteers doing a home visit! Luckily she chose to look elsewhere because I didn't feel good about her at all. (She also wanted a dog that wasn't housetrained yet but she and her husband worked very long hours....seldom home, etc.)

Ratbone doesn't check credit scores, lol, but I can almost see why someone would.  I think it's an indication of how financially responsible they are - and can be indicative as to whether or not they can really afford the responsibility of pet ownership.

But granted, when I adopted my first rescue, Bandit, it was from a local rescue here near Albany and I had pretty crappy credit at the time, but I still did everything I could financially when he wound up having cancer.....

I know Sue. I'm still new at fostering and learning but this lady would only speak on the phone (didn't like the computer?) and hearing what she was saying just made me think she would take any cute, small dog that she could get quickly. I just didn't think it was a good situation for one of our ratties.

I know sometimes it seems like rescues ask a lot of potential homes. Folks forget that these dogs have often already been through the ringer (one or more homes, abuse, puppymill, etc). The process is intense both because we want to be sure the right dog goes to the right family AND because we want to be as sure as possible that it's a FOREVER home.

It's not always about if you are a "GOOD" person or not but I think folks feel that way sometimes. Like MB just said, her person wanted a dog that was not housebroken but she and her hubby were not home often. That is a recipe for disaster in some cases and at the least a red flag. Not that they wouldn't be good dog owners - just maybe not THAT dog (of course in that case it sounds like they already had a problem dog they were not working on fixing).

I just finished organizing a home visit for an adopter that I KNEW was going to pass before we even did the HV. Her vet loved her, the local rescue group knows her and loves her, they've all been to her home before and love her current dog etc etc etc. There was no doubt that she'd pass but we still went through the process just to be safe and because we try to treat all potential adopters the same. Of course she was a big pass and it's a great home. Had she been impatient with the process she'd be missing a great dog and we'd be missing a great adopter.

People forget - that most of us who are volunteers have BEEN through the process. Yes, it took time when I applied for my Sandy 6 years ago!! But once I made my mind up to adopting her, I would have done ANYTHING to get her. Nothing was going to change my mind. People who don't want to wait... or have issues and question our policies and procedures... I have no patience for them... We have our rules in place for a reason..... I had to abide by those rules when I adopted, and I expect any person who adopts one of my fosters - or any Ratbone dog for that matter - to abide by those rules. *getting off my soapbox now* LOL

We are all volunteers with real jobs and lives. Yes, sometimes the process takes time, much more time than adopting from a shelter or buying from a pet store, and people have to understand that........

Heck Sue, I don't even HAVE a RBR dog but I went through the whole process just to be an HV coordinator/foster home. And there is NO way I'd adopt out a foster of mine to anything less than the perfect place for that dog. We put too much love into them to let them have anything other than the best shot at a great life.

I don't have RBR dog either but like Bethany went through the process to become a foster mom.
Ratbones is very professional, too, in how everyone handles the entire adoption process, I've been very impressed by quickly things get done and how everyone works together. Sometimes, I think, adopters forget that we are all volunteers who are doing this in our "spare" time.

Hah - I've got RBR time, Rt.com time, dog time, horse time, housekeeping time, work time, hubby time. True...not so much free time.

Amy - every rescue has a slightly different application process. Ratbone Rescue does not do a credit check.

My opinion was not meant to put down anyones time and efforts in volunteering.    I was just referring to my parents situation.

Obviously, ratty owners are a different breed of folks.  It takes special people to love rat dogs.  We always say how thankful we are that we are the parents of our pups.  Noone else quite gets them.

LOL, I was going to say the same thing. Of course Lola's previous family didn't ask me ANYTHING about my home, I simply drove up and they handed her to me, and that's not the best practice, either -- but if I had to get through a credit check, I would never get a dog! The thing a credit check doesn't show you is that most of the time, the things that have marred my credit report were the result of me missing an un-pet-related payment here or there so I could afford to do take care of my pets!

Luckily, I'm out of college and those situations are *mostly* in the past!
