Last week I found a stray 4 month old Rat Terrier in Stockton California ( I live in Sacramento).  After having it checked out by a vet (no micro-chip), I decided I would try to keep her.  I have also checked shelters and online ads seeing if anyone is looking for her. She is the most wonderful dog.  However, after being with her for a week, I have decided that she is probably not the best fit.  I live in an apartment and sometimes work 12 hour days.  I was in tears all weekend about her trying to figure out some way that I could keep her.  I just don't think it would be fair to her.  I think she needs to be in a home that can give her lots of attention.  She is so well behaved and already knows, Sit, Stay, Off and is crate trained at night.  (I actually wrote in this weekend asking training advice).

I have put an ad on Petfinder.com but I would feel alot better if I could get her with some people that know Rat Terriers.  I DO NOT WANT TO PUT HER IN A SHELTER!  I will keep her until I can place her but I just need some help doing it.

Will any of you be able to help?  I love this little dog so much but I know that I would only be selfish if I kept her.

I have already emailed Ratbones and Rat Terrier Rescues.  I have also called American Rat Terrier Rescue which is headquartered out of Isleton CA (near Sacramento).   Is there anything or anyone else that can help?   Thank you!!

oh poor baby--someone is missing that dog--is there a national register for lost dogs? I know I am not that bright so it must have been thought of by a million people---Does it exist??

oh also--I live in apartment--they are good apartment dogs --- Do you have someone in your building who is a dog walker or someone you can trust to play with her---maybe a gook kid who want to make a few bucks this summer?

Thanks for rescuing this girl! If you are able to keep her until she's adopted, Ratbone Rescues has a program for situations like yours where the dog would continue to stay with you while we find her a new home. It's called the Guardian Assistance Placement (GAP) program. She would be posted on our website (as well as on Petfinder and 1-800-SaveAPet) with a bio and photos, and we would take the responsibility for screening potential adopters and arranging transportation to her new family.

She would need to be spayed, up to date on vaccinations and heartworm negative to be eligible for the program.

Would this be an option for you? Our foster homes are so crowded right now. The GAP program really would be best (easier) for your pup, plus it would allow us to keep our limited foster space available for those dogs who would die in shelters otherwise.

If you have any questions, or if you would like more information about GAP, you can write me at rbrgap@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to tell you more about it. I'd also need a photo, if you can send one, to verify that's she's a rattie.

I live in Elk grove and work in stockton. Do you have pictures? Maybe I can help find it a home. Please post some pictures or let me know if there is some way I can help out...is this a sign I should take the puppy? Oh god I think my husband would kill me. I have friends though maybe I can convince some. I think its a sign of something anyway. Can you give more info does it seem potty trained? Is it male or female?

I might be able to get away with fostering (GAP) if it really really needs a home but if you can post some pics I can send them around to my friends (one is looking for a new dog just hasnt found the right one yet) and maybe they will take it.

Oh my gosh... I live in Elk Grove, too. I put Sacramento since many people don't know where Elk Grove is. She is female and is partially potty trained. She still has accidents but she is getting better as long as I watch her and take her out on schedule. She is good on a leash, too. I actually have her at work with me right now and she is sleeping in her crate. She is the BEST puppy ever. She is very attached to me already which is making this even harder for me. I would love it if you could help me out!! I can't figure out how to post pictures on this site. I can email you pictures if you want to give me your email address.
Thank you so much for responding and I look forward to hearing back from you. Oh, and I don't mind keeping her until a home is found. The only downside is that I will become more and more attached. That's my biggest fear. But thank you!!!

OMG, she's so pretty! I'm close enough to be tempted to take her (Santa Rosa area)

It's so wonderful that you were able to rescue her and are now trying to find her a good home.

I just yelled down to hubby that I found us another girl.......he said NO! LOL She really is very cute!
My sister has my younger pup's brother at her apt and he does VERY well. He loves his crate and
chooses to lay in it when they are home too. Is taking her to work with you a few days
a week realistic?

I checked with one friend she has too much going on right now to take on a dog. Emailed a couple I know waiting for a response. If that doesnt work I can also try some others but these two were the top of my list. I will let you know what I hear.
