Donna, there are MILLIONS of dogs being PUT TO SLEEP every year. MILLIONS, and plenty of them are our beloved ratties. MANY of us on this board work tirelessly to save as many as we can. We cry, we lose sleep, we work our asses off to save dogs. You know this. You know this is a heated topic. What ever do you think to accomplish? That folks who have strong opinions are suddenly going to be swayed to your way of thinking? That we will all suddenly embrace you as the most ethical and deserving breeder of our times? YOU KNOW there are strong opinions here. I have held mine in check for a while now since I don't think there is any point in trying to educate someone who refuses to see things from any other perspective than her own. By all means continue to start threads like this so we can voice our opinions. Seems like a wise approach to me.

That is a very true statement Gwacie, and there are very stong opinions about breeding. Are puppies cute, absolutely, but did you know:
many backyard dog breeders and pet stores who supply the majority of purebreds simply are selling inbred pets without care for preventing genetic problems?
7 million adoptable dogs & cats are killed each year due mainly to overpopulation? Did you know that 25-30% of dogs for adoption in animal shelters are purebred? The other 70-75%, of course, are lovable, wonderful mixed-breed pets,
Over 7 million pet dogs and cats are put to sleep each year due to overpopulation.
7 Million PTS, and I am going to support ANYONE who brings more into this world. Not me. Not anytime. Not Ever.

To the forum at large:
I sincerely hate having to lock threads. Let me be frank: I think that this thread was originally designed to end up exactly as it did. And to state "I'm not flaming" doesn't mean that flame-baiting isn't exactly what one is hoping to accomplish. It's like saying, "I don't mean to sound rude, but..." knowing that everything after the 'but' is going to be rude. Saying you don't mean to do something, doesn't mean that's exactly what you are about to do. And, yes, I think pushing buttons is a power trip that some like to engage in.
As a warning to everyone: this kind behavior will not be tolerated. It is fine to have an honest discussion on breeding practices as long as we remain civil. It is NOT ok to start a topic knowing that it will have varying opinions and then to take offense at those varying opinions and cry foul and claim you are being personal attacked in order to garner sympathy and attention.
I hate being harsh. Really. I would prefer not to have to be, but I will be when it is necessary.
