I made the mistake of picking up our local newspaper awhile ago while on my lunch break....
On the front page of the second section there was a picture of a beautiful siberian huskey...in a cage at the humane society (kill shelter). Headlines read: "In Hard times, Owners Surrender Pets". This dog looked SO scared... all hunched over with its head down...
The article said that people are struggling due to high gas prices (which in turn causes everything else to go up in price)... and several people are leaving their pets tied to stakes in front of the shelter with notes on them. One note said "I cannot afford to feed my dog". Several have been left in abandoned homes ... others dumped in remote areas or on dead-end streets and left to roam.
This month (June) has seen record numbers of owner-surrendered pets. Over 1500 dogs were taken in by the shelter in June, and euthanizations of course have increased also.
I am so depressed over this... having a hard time shaking it off, and I'm wishing I had never read this article.
I'm feeling very very helpless.... |

| Are there any organizations or charities that people could go to to get dog food in times of need? I know they probably can't afford heartworm meds or vet care either. There are a lot of things I will do without before I would even think of not having Bob with me. |

I make a monthly monetary donation... and also donate dog food to our local shelter in our county. The shelter referred to in the paper is in Davidson County (Nashville) and I live in the adjoining county. Several agility people go in together and donate bags of dog food and take turns delivering it. We do what we can... it's just never enough. Therein lies my frustration and feeling of helplessness. |

Exactly Pam - my dogs are a necessity. TV, eating out, cell phone - those are luxuries. And yes Nora, it is never enough...there are always more dogs that need help. We do what we can. And why I preach that people should spay and neuter their dogs. |

EXACTLY Pam !!! I know people who say they can't afford to have their dog spayed or neutered..... but can afford to have their hair done or fake fingernails applied... or who go out to eat every day. I'm not saying everyone is that way... but I know a LOT of people who are that way. It's kinda like saying "I can't afford to feed my dog, but I'm not giving up what "I" want for myself". | akdfjlakfj i got chills now.. i really dont see how people can just drop dogs off on the street. If I were ever honestly in no way POSSIBLE able to do the minimum for Joleigh, I would have never got her. I may get to points when times are high & money is low, like now... but that doesn't make me think about how much easier it would be if I didn't have her.. She's my angel puppy and I honestly believe that she was sent to me. Either that or the whole "how I got her" story was a completely humongous coincidence. |

Living on a small farm with farm animals as well as pets it can be very tough some times coming up with the money for the feed for these animals but we do......even at the expense of loosing the cable........we spend about $40 a month on corn and feed for the barn animals and just a little over that for dog and at food........to us.......that is just another needed expense that we budget for........ A friend of mine just split from her husband and they had 2 rat terriers and before she could go and get them he took one to the pound and "says" he is keeping the other one..........thank God a friend of hers fell in love with the one that went to the pound nd adopted but she is so worried about her other pup.......her soon to be ex does not "spend" money on just dogs...........she is trying every thing she can to find her baby and get her back......... |

| My heart just aches for these animals. I agree, that if you take on the honor of owning a dog, and I do mean it is an honor, then you should be willing to do without the little extras in order to keep them healthy and happy. Mine are my babies and I wouldn't have it any other way. Tears are flowing. |

the economy is very hard today.... i just took in an owner surrender, who is losing her home and has to be out by today.....
This dog here is 6 years old..... a female and as sweet as she can be. and in the last two mornings, i can tell that she seems confuse with everything that is going on... and it looks like she's waking up and realizes that it's for real, she's not with her owner anymore. It is so sad, i know. in fact, this dog is from TN. not far from nashville. So I am calling her Rosie, my daughter picked that name. She is responding to it already!
Pam i agree, all the luxuries can be held off for some time till things get better. I am very tight on budget. but hey, i rather help those i needs than those that "wants" I am getting ready to get rid of dish network, and I would like hubby to sell his bike, but i don't think that will go too well. lol |

| Hubby and I both work two jobs and so do both of our sons. Dish Network, Netflix movies, and Internet at home would be the first things to go if we couldn't afford them. We hardly ever eat out any more and I haven't bought any clothes in a while. My splurge right now is that I started going to Weight Watchers again this weekend. I'm a lifetime member but I have to pay each week until I get within 2 pounds of my goal weight. I could kick myself when I think of all that money I wasted by not sticking with the program and gaining back all that weight. |

I am currently going to school full time.... which make things harder with the rising prices. I tried working and going to school but that did not work out too well, and my old boss didn't work with me around my schooling so i had to quit... I didn't want to, but i knew that with my education, just getting a degree will help pay better than doing hair for close to minimum wage. |

| I'll tell you that right after me and Daniel got separated year before last that after bills I would have $15(if that and no this is not an exaggeration) to spend on food, and I would always buy Guens dog food first, my sister even found out about me having to make that choice and bought Guens food once, So no to eat or not to eat for myself has never been the question she always came first. I still can't afford to get her spayed and am very behind on getting her shots. But I'm doing every thing I can to take the best care of her. I know I'm going to get criticized about not getting these things done, but there is nowhere in our budget to cut back on any thing even being on food stamps we can barly afford to pay bills on time, but if Guenhwyvar needs food that always comes first she IS FAMILY. |

| I work for a cable company, so that would be one of the last things to go in my house. I get unlimited internet, telephone and all of the cable tv stations, including premium channels, at a discount...35.00 a month...plus I have insurance, including dental, and vision. To a lot of people, cable is their only form of entertainment, because they do not go out to the movies. Also, After February 17, 2009, you will not be able to get tv over the airwaves anymore. No more analog antennas. If you do not have some form of digital TV, you will not even be able to get the news channels. The government is sending out 40.00 voucher, to buy a digital box at Best Buy, or wherever, but for people who cannot afford to buy one. I am not sure how that is gonna work, because I think you will still have to have Basic service, which is between 15.00-20.00 a month. |

we plan on getting the digital box..... and when i was growing up, all we had was 5 or 7 channels. and there was always something to do.... I get so tired of my kids watching t.v. they would be glued to it if i let them, but right now t.v. is off, and they are outside in the backyard playing....
We have alot of apostolic (sp) families around here and several of them don't own a t.v. some do and some don't.
But I am keeping the internet, because i do some of my classes on online. and keeping the phone, in case i must get rid of the cell phone. but I love my cell, i'm not on it all the time, just nice to have in emerencies, or to contact hubby at work instead of calling his work number...
and I might join netflex.... it just all depends. on bills and such... maybe not right away... but sometime, and seems cheaper than to rent videos from the store.
but yes, i agree on putting our babies first... fur and skin kids...... they need food in their tummy and a roof over their head. |

Hugs, Nora. I know exactly how you feel.
We have so many Ratties coming out of the woodwork - so many more than I ever remembered over the past years.... and that's just 1 breed of dog..... we had a 12 year old Rattie in a Boston shelter whose owner lost her house due to the mortgage crisis...... at first, the shelter said rescue was her only chance or else they had to euthanize her, not cuz of her age, but cuz her owner called her "cheeky" and she had a few issues (nothing major)..... when we couldn't take her....... or I couldn't find another rescue to take her, and believe me, I tried.......... they decided to put her up for adoption, thank goodness. That dog's picture haunted me..... and it still does until I find out she's adopted and safe.
If you check out GoodSearch's home page, even they are saying how the economy is hurting not-for-profits and charities. Here's the link:

I'm afraid it's only going to get worse before it gets better. I'm sorry that's not what you want to hear, but it's the painful truth. We need to concentrate on those we can save and pray for the ones we cannot.

I used to volunteer every other weekend at the local shelter and I just had to stop going. It's depressing! SO many people drop dogs off and always have a lame excuse. I was probably annoying people that wanted to look at a dog out in the play area with the "this is a lifetime commitment", "we look for forever homes", etc but sheesh people! Don't just stop by the pound and decide to take someone home on a whim! Yes, I agree that the bad economy is the newest excuse for everything. Must not be too bad if everyone's still driving big trucks and SUVs!! By the way, I'm new and have posted way too much without introducing myself =) I am Susanne age 28, I have two rattie daughters - Belle age 3 and Libby age 1, and a human son age 9 (almost). I just finally found and married the love of my life! We are working on having a baby =) Life is good! For those of you that have money beyond your doggie budget for your house, check out my At Home America stuff at www.athome.com/susanne and my myspace page can be found at www.myspace.com/whskygrl80 . I am so happy to have found rat-terrier.com - a forum for my puppies!! |

| Our local shelters are also overwhelmed with the drop offs. I found it odd that the food bank doesn't give out any type of pet food. I usually buy an extra bag everytime I buy for my two and we drop it off at a local no kill shelter. I just don't think there is any easy answer, except to help where you can help and when you can help. I recently returned to the workforce and I kid my husband that I returned to work to pay for his gas for him to get back and forth to work. |
