My dad recently lost one of his doggies and he is devistated. He is finally at the point where he wants to get a new one but is having a hard time. They dont want to drive 2+ hours but he kinda lives in the boonies. He is looking for a spaniel puppy I dont think gender matters and they dont really want to get a purebread (price). He has has several acres and another mix doggie. He lives in michigan zip code 49660 can anyone give any suggestions? What he really wants is a lap dog or a cuddler.

Would he consider a rattie?

Jazzi female

2008-06-11

Location: Michigan

Jazzi is a lively, funny pup. She is 6 months old and black as coal with a white chest. She is 11" tall but weighs only 8.5 pounds, as she is always running too fast for weight to catch up to her. Jazzi is trying to learn her manners, but is so excited with life that sometimes it's really hard to remember them. She's housetrained and crate trained, but is still a puppy who can get excited and forget so will need to be kept on a schedule. She loves people of all sizes and ages, but because she loves to jump, she'd be better off in a home without very small children. She gets along great with other dogs and cats; however, she does like to play with the cats, even when they don’t want to play with her! Once the cats give her a little cuff, she’s off to explore new adventures. Jazzi will fit in well with any family that understands that puppies need guidelines and gentleness, and have tons of energy. She'd do best with a fenced yard, since she needs to run and play. She loves to chase her squeaky ball and learns quickly, so would likely do great learning fly ball and/or agility.

Major male

2008-04-24

Location: Michigan

Major's former family left him at a shelter with instructions to have him euthanized, but luckily Ratbone Rescues stepped in and saved him from that fate! This poor guy had been obviously neglected and unloved. And he hadn't been kept on heartworm preventative, so was infected with heartworms. Major has now successfully completed heartworm treatment, is fully recovered, and is available for adoption. Major is 2 years old, weighs 16 pounds, is very affectionate, and wants very much to please. But he also loves to run and play, and needs a securely fenced yard where he can unleash his energy. He is reliably housetrained, and is crate trained and obedient. He knows the "sit" command and usually comes when called. He loves to go on car rides and walks. He gets along great with other dogs but can be a little rough with very young children, so shouldn't be adopted by a family with kids under the age of 10. This handsome boy deserves a "major" change of luck with a forever home that will cherish him and care for him faithfully. He promises to return that love ten times over! Kilo female

2008-03-18

Location: Michigan

Kilo is a ten-year-old female. The day after Christmas her family decided she was getting old, so they took her to a shelter to be put down. When the shelter folks saw what a nice little dog she was, they contacted Ratbone Rescues. Good thing, because Kilo has a whole lot of living and loving left to do! She is house and crate trained. She is good with other dogs and cats. She likes kids, but because of her size and age, she would do best in a home without children under 10 years old. She likes to play outside and she loves to chase squirrels, but when she is done, she really enjoys a nice lap to cuddle up on. She likes to ride in cars and enjoys a good walk. Her favorite place to sleep is right next to you! Kilo only weighs 13 pounds, but she will fill your heart and home with tons of love for many years to come.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dad's dog. I hope he's doing well.
What breed of spaniel are you looking for? There are a lot of different types, like American Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, ect. When you say puppy, do you mean a really young puppy (around 6 months) or just a young dog?

I did a quick search on petfinder, and here are some spaniels that came up...

I'm sorry to hear about your dad's dog, but happy to hear that he's ready to open his heart to another dog. I had a springer spaniel growing up, she wasn't too smart, but she made up for it in love.

you have many great options here already, have your dad look at them and see if one pulls at him...personally, I love the markings of the spaniel "without a name," he's very pretty.

Buddy - gone but never forgotten.

Thanks everyone, he wants a small young puppy from what I got from him and they dont want to drive 2+ hours to get one. I think they are pretty set on some kind of spaniel mix (I dont think it really matters). I think at this point they really have no option about the distance. As weird as it is he fell in love with my sisters friends long haird chuwawa (sp) and evidently is on the breeders list for one of those. A bunch of people offered to pitch in on the cost if thats what he wants.

Like I said my dad lives in the boonies on several acres, he does have another dog I think its a lab mix but she does not cuddle. He was having something delivered to his house when the idiot backed over Divot (the spaniel mix) and killed him This was in his driveway. Not even a week later he was working on his boat and fell backwards into the engine compartment and broke his arm in 4 places right below the socket. He was in a lot of pain and they couldnt cast it because of where it was. He is feeling better now and I think ready to take on another doggie. I really wish he would get a rat terrier to be honest I think he would love it! Cuddly and will run around his property with him without issue too. I live on the other side of the country and dont see him often. I generally have not got along well with him (we wont go into that) but Im trying to make some effort and have talked to him on the phone a few times lately. I told them I would look around online because he can only get dial up and I guess my step mom spent 2 hours trying to surf around and find a dog. They also went to their local spca and everything they had was already over 40 lbs.

I like him too, Lisabeth!
You know what, the fact that he doesn't have a name annoys me. w2c35-06-19 will now be called Kubber on rt.com. -waves magic name wand-

Anyway, I did another search for rat terriers/ mixes....

OMG I love those little ratties you just posted. I WANT THEM LOL. I talked to my sister again this morning and she said "they dont want rat terriers" bah I dont know why I think they would be perfect! but Im not going to argue. But unless they are willing to drive a few hours doesnt look like they are going to get what they want anytime soon.
