He has been in the shelter since Jan 23, his owners turned him in when they moved. They are a kill shelter and his time is coming due. Russell rescue won't take him b/c he is not full JRT and our fosters are busting at the seams. Is there anything you can do??   the main page is just franklincountydogs.com he is right on the front page too,

Ohio, Sue if you can find a foster home I will do transport, wherever it may be to, I don't care if I have to drive to NY.

We don't have any available fosterhomes in NY, but let me post him on Ratbone's board and I'll let you know what transpires.  Unfortunately, I can't promise anything...

something is better than nothing. If he can find a foster maybe we can do transport, we just got notified of him and I can't believe he has been in there that long. I am willing to pay his adoption fee if needed also. I am hoping ratbones can help otherwise the only other hope is someone adopts him before................

I hate days like this,  today is the day where all the emails are dogs that are in kill shelters marked urgent.

I actually asked that question and they said he seems to be fine there with other dogs, being in a shelter that long I am not sure how he will be once he is out but they said he is an absolute love which is probably what is keeping him hanging on./

Good to know, always easier to integrate a lover instead of a fighter (grin). I have room (Cheeto the TFT/CHI mix that they *said* was an RT was handed over to ATFTC rescue this weekend) so I'll let the team know and see if it can work out.

LOL Nora, I suspect you are far more caretaker than caretak-ee but you can certainly visit! I'm afraid all I have to offer is a futon but rumor has it that it's comfy.

Can you also check if he's neutered and up to date?  We also need to know if he's HW negative.  If he's not vetted, can they do it for us before you pull him and is there any adoption fees for rescues?

THANKS!!

Okay here is the deal. I called the shelter and wanted some more info on Jack. He is neutered, up to date of shots and HW neg. NOW they told me that a initial visit has to be done before they will adopt out, crazy right. Anyway, I told them I was with rescue and we wanted to pull this guy and put him in foster care. They told me this dog was in no danger because his temperment is good and they do not put down dogs who are adoptable, I asked them if they were a kill shelter and they said it's their discretion, whatever that means. Anyway, the warden or someone is supposed to call me back to talk about putting Jack in rescue, it;'s almost like they are fighting me on this. I want to get Jack out of there, in 5 months not being adopted and living in a cage is horrible. Here is the deal. I can do all transport on the 24th. I am out of town this weekend and work the week. If there is a way to get him pulled asap and fostered until then I will do whatever driving in necessary. Also he is $117.00 they give no break to rescue, I am willing to pay that or pay someone back if he gets pulled before the 24th. I don't really know what to do because of the fact that he is in no danger of being put down and Gwacies fostering availablity could be used for a dog in danger. What to do??

"at their discretion"? So next week they could decide to put him down? or not? Seems like they would welcome a rescue, especially since he's been there so long....

Hey Val,

I'm sorry I didn't call you last night - my cousin called around 7:30 with a sort of family emergency she needed to discuss with me, and by the time we got off the phone it was after 9pm and I didn't want to call you that late.

Since he's not in danger, we have some time to figure it out of Gwacie can take him or find him another place to go, but I agree - 5 months in a cage is no way for him to live. He could be there for a year or longer - and that's not good.

Since I don't have internet access at home and just got into work, I'm playing catch up here, so give me a few and I'll check to see what's going on with the shelter other dog!

I have room. I've run into this problem with Ohio animal control before - the wardens don't like to work with rescue groups for some reason (I have no clue why). I'm glad he's in no danger though a life in a cage is less than ideal certainly. I'll have to defer to Ratbone on this one and will go whichever way they choose.

Hey Sue,

Here is the deal.  Franklin county is giving me a real hard time about pulling him into rescue. They want Gwacie to come with all her dogs and see if they get along. They also want an initial visit then come back and pick him up on a second day. I don't have that kind of gas money or time. He is in NO danger, the girl said he will be there until he is adopted. I know it stinks but if that means there is room for one that is in real danger, that has to be the right choice, right? I hate these situations.

Gwacie, I am with you on this one. My brother who lives in Columbus is off Monday, he can pull him but I don't know if Franklin County will let him because of that whole initial visit thing. I don't know the right thing to do. I am going with Ratbone on this one also, whatever is the right choice. Ross County and Franklin County are the worst here in Ohio, they make adopting difficult.

I know Val, they are always hard decisions. I hate having to make them but I do try to focus on the ones with no hope at all. The sad thing is the longer a dog is in a shelter the more it affects them and they require serious work when the get out (retraining, resocialiizing etc).

Will they let us know IF he finds himself in danger?  How long will they keep him there??  Until he's adopted?  What if he's not adopted??

These shelter who are not rescue friendly just grind me. I don't understand it...
