The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Well his name is Sparky, and we will be signing the papers on the little fella Wednesday, he has to have one more vet visit, to be "altered" as the Humane Society calls it.

Congrats, you will be amazed at the loyalty and love the Ratties can give. Don't be suprised if you start calling them one of your kids.

Welcome to the site and BLESS you for adopting. Can't wait for some pics of Sparky!!!! Rat terriers are very intelligent, active dogs...but not hyper active, usually. With a good routine walk or two a day, they are usually quite content to "hang out", and a two year old will be even more so than a puppy

Update, we have been to do the paper work, seems the young girl who first introduced us was a little off on the age, vet figures around 6 months, but SPARKY comes home today!!!   He has gone though his, "Alterations" with flying colors and is doing fine, shots updated as well.  Hope to have pictures posted soon, my family is very excited.

Congrats Patman. There is a HUGE difference in behavior between a 6month old and a 2 year old so please stop in if you need input or training tips etc. These are great little dogs but very busy. If you are not careful they will find something interesting to occupy themselves, usually involving chewing or digging, so it's best to go in armed with knowledge and a cleaned up house from the start lest Sparky find your favorite shoes! Can't wait to see pics, welcome welcome!

Congratulations.... Make sure you stick around and tell us all about him (and don't forget pics!!!) I agree with Bethany, best to head off potential issues before they even start Try reading some of the training forums and asking tons of questions here. I hope you are planning on crate training him as well - that's always my first recommendation to new doggie owners, whether puppies or not.

Yes, I figured he will be way more active then a 2 year old, but thus far the lady who runs the Humane Society, said he is rather calm, she drove him to the vet yesterday and he just calmly sat in the passenger seat, and never moved.  We will see, I am fully prepared for some hyper active behavior though.  We also crate train, I have done all my dogs that way, mostly Labs which can be very destructive for almost 2 years, takes them a while to mature.  My Lab had passed away a number of years ago, and I just have not tried to get another one, was to attached to him.  He was my duck hunting partner, and close friend, he died of some kind of liver disease.  My late grandfather use to raise Ratters, so I figured I would get one of my own.  My father was telling me, stories of how he and his dad use to go to the corn crib, and their Ratter would always make sure he was there.  He would sit between my dad and grandfather and pounce any rat that showed up!!  LOL

Glad you're familiar with the crate training - it is such a huge help. Can't wait to see some pics and here how he is doing. He may be just a little more laid back right now from stress and once he's in his forever home with you, he may come out of his shell Good luck and stick around!!!!

Usually it takes a shelter dog a few days or even weeks to adjust and show their TRUE nature I've found. It depends on how long he was there and how much self confidence he has in general. So don't let that quiet little demeanor fool you, I never met a rattie pup who wasn't at least somewhat full of beans!

WELCOME!  Can't wait to see pictures.

Ratties are a trip.....they can go 90 to nothing one minute and then snuggle with you the next.  It has been an absolute joy having Dink these past 8 mos.  He's 11 mos old now.

Welcome! You are in for a lot of fun with a rattie. Post some pics when you get a chance.

My mom had a yellow lab who passed away 3 yrs ago...she still cries over him, so I understand you not wanting another lab...too many good memories there. Ratties are big dogs in small packages, if you know what I mean.

Ratties are a true blessing. We got our beloved Cairn Terrier when he was 7 weeks old and expected a more energetic dog (we were young and could handle it - that was 19 years ago). A year ago this Monday we adopted a rattie who had been abused. Within 2 days he owned the place an were were his "guests". He loves catching his ball as well as chasing it. I think our Cairn is in the "Rainbow Bridge" looking down on what he missed out on. (we would throw the ball for him, he would find it and then take us to it and want to do it all over again!) Our rattie (Nibs) is now just over two and even more entergetic than when we first brought him home. I told my hubby he will either kill us or make us younger - I don't know about hubby - but I feel younger!
