My 13 yr old daughter told me she want to volunteer at our local shelter this summer.  She says she thinks it will be fun.  She wants to be able to spend time with the animals and maybe walk the dogs, bath them....ect.  I dont know if they let kids volunteer, I havent checked in to it yet.  BUT I dont know if that would be a good thing for her to do.  She LOVES animals and get attached easily.  I dont know how she would be able to handle if an animal got put to sleep there.  I know they do that at this shelter and Im afraid she will beg me to adopt them all...and I probably would if they were going to put an animal down.

Do any of you have any opinions on this?  I'd like to hear them if you do.

it's great that she wants to volunteer, PERIOD. On one hand, it would be a great experience for her to realize how cruel things can be, but it may scar her at her age, and you may end up with a house full of animals. Maybe they would let her volunteer to just walk animals, and never walk the same one twice? that way she wouldn't get too attatched to any of them.

Maybe there is a shelter she could volunteer at that does not euthanize? I think it's great that she wants to help the animals and that should be encouraged.
