There seems to be alot more rat terriers in the south then here in the northwest.  We have them here, but where I live anyway I dont think I've seen one in a shelter.  I wonder why that is, why their population is higher down south.  All these rescues I hear about and dogs needing foster/adoptive homes are from the south.  Strange how that is.

ive noticed the same thingI i never even heard of the breed until one day i was standing in line in a petco and a lady had a puppy, naturally i said awww how adorable, then i asked what breed it was and when she said rat terrier. i looked at the puppy and there and then i decided to research about the breed and decided that was the breed for me!

I am located in Georgia and we are flooded with Rat Terriers in kill shelters. There may be a lot more irresponsible breeders in the south as well as farmers who have them and do not spay/neuter them. I know both GA and TX are hurting right now for more foster homes due to the high volume of Rat Terriers in kill shelters and their time is running out or up. We were able to assist 3 out of kill shelters this week alone and that is a lot! There are pleny more on our waiting list that don't really have time to wait.

I've never seen another known rat terrier up here in the northeast...that is, I see a lot of supposed jack russels and such that look like they might have been rat terriers and were just mistaken.

I am in Portland Oregon. When I did my research, I found it very hard to find rat terriers in this area. There is one in the shelter right now and they have a limitation on adopting if you have young kids, there are very few on craigslist also. I adopted paisley through ratbones, I noticed there were very few dogs over this way.

i actually found a breeder in washington that i am getting one from, yeah i didnt know about ratbones either, i think it is such a great thing they are doing. i would totally have gotten one from them, except i am looking forward to 'my first puppy' and training her and everything, but im thinking that maybe in a year or so i might try and get my girl a brother or sister from them, once i get my feet on the ground i am from the maple valley area and attend CWU in ellensburg. almost went to bellingham actually at WWU

I think there are quite a few breeders in California, but as you move north, they are a lot harder to find. When I read up on this breed before acquiring Button, the literature stated the breed was more prevalent in the South, without offering suggestions as to why that was the case.  Maybe 'cause they're so darned cold-natured?

Yup, I am in NY and it is rare that anyone has heard of them. I just stumbled across them myself. I think the farms in the South used them more so they are a more common breed there.

Yes, there a lot of ratties in the south.  Just remember if you live in a rattie-deprived area of the country - you can still adopt a rattie from the south via Ratbones!  (They will come with a southern accent though...)

Very good point, this is how I ended up with Alice. Petfinder had her listed as a Jack Russell, she looked so much like Fred I had someone pull her b/c the kill shelter wouldn't hold her for me (4hour ride). By the time I got to her I knew she wasn't a JRT so after research found out she was a Rattie, I am glad petfinder made the mistake or I never would have found her.

Have you found out yet when you get to bring the pup home?

I hadn't heard of a rat terrier before I brought Lucy home. But it seems that they are gaining popularity here. People are starting to know what breed she is more andmore.

the breeder had puppies in february and they were leaving for their homes in aprl but i wasnt able to have one yet, so i talked to her and i am hopefully getting one from her next littler from a different dog. shes not a breeder that always has puppies which i guess is more of a good thing. her dog should come into heat next month or july, so i will be getting her in the early fall.
this actually works out really well because i am goingto be working a lot this summer and will have more time when school starts up sad though, im ready for my pup now
