I had my home visit today to get approved to volunteer for Ratbones. I want to volunteer for transports and home visits. Well the visit went well but my dogs did not.

I am so upset. Boozer was very aggressive and tried to bite one of the beautiful ratties that came along with Norma, the lady doing the visit. If her husband hadn't pulled their dog back, Boozer would have bit her. Geigh barked at the top of her lungs and never calmed down.

I won't be able to bring any dogs home with me during a transport until they are socialized better.

Based on their behavior, I may not ever be able to bring another dog into my house.

Sometimes dogs can be more aggressive on their home turf, esp if they are not used to having other dogs in and out. Geigh most likely barked more in response to Boozer's signals. If you want to work on this you might sign up to take Boozer to some classes (even if he is already trained, you are signing up so he can be socialized with other dogs). If you find that he is either not aggressive in class OR learns to relax quickly then you know it is a home turf thing and you have to work him at home next.

Good luck!

You might want to post this over in Training to get some advice from Nora.  Are your dogs used to new dogs coming  into your house?  If not then that may be something to work on...mine get very excited when a "strange" dog comes in the house but they just bark a lot, don't bite.  It also really helped when I brought Danica home that I took Mitzy with me to pick her up...so they met on neutral ground...because Mitzy is my dominant female.

In any case it shouldn't effect your ability to do home visits (you don't need to take your dogs with you) or help with transports where you don't have your dogs with you in the car.

Thanks, I posted it there. I know that I can still volunteer but it was very disappointing to have the dogs act that way.

Ok, the bad was the way your dogs behaved. The good is that you know what you need to work on in order for your babies to be well rounded. It is not as hard as it sounds. I am sure that you will get lots of good advice on how to do this and in the future be able to bring other dogs into your home. If you have males, maybe only bring females in etc. There are always ways to work things out.

I have a 100 lb rottie that wouldn't hurt a puppy for love nor money, so I bring in small dogs (he thinks that they are babies). I then put the newbies in an x-pen enclosure when he is out. He smells them and after a couple of days, figures they are here for awhile and everybody is good to go. I know sounds simple, it is a yes and no answer but the way I do it it works. Once in awhile it doesn't work and then in that case they are never ever together. Everybody gets their time and then the foster gets adopted and all is fine again.
