There is a little 4 year old 8-10lb female at a terrible shelter in Michigan.  This shelter is worse than awful as they sell animals to research facilities or worse.  Here is what a shelter volunteer said to the Michigan state Ratbones coordinator when she called to check:

"This shelter WILL sell these dogs the second they are available if we don't have rescues willing to pull them.  There is a $20 pull fee, and they CO2 euthanasia and Class B Dealer.  This dealer only comes once a week, yet has pulled dogs 3 times this week for research, so there is no time to waste!"

So even though I am full up (have 4 dogs) I told my state coordinator that I will foster this little girl if we can get her out. PLEASE  Cross your fingers for her (and say a prayer if you would).  This shelter is so bad - how much worse than even just euthanizing, to send PETS to a research factility.  It's bad enough that animal testing goes on with non pets but to take a dog that was likely taught to trust humans and expect love from them.....it's unspeakable to me.

I'm waiting to hear more.

OMG, that is just aweful!! I hope you are able to get her out of there..keep us posted!

When you own a Rattie....you KNOW you are in your right mind

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?
Emg

That IS unspeakably horrible. They sell them for research just to make a few bucks rather than euthanizing?!

The poor little thing, Pinky is out of Michigan. I am hoping that you will be able to get her out of there and she will not be used for testing or research.

She is in Montcalm and I will let you know Ashlee. I'm waiting for Sue to get back to me (state coordinator) as she is doing the leg work on her.

I know MB, what a dreadful thing. Most of our shelters euthanize here in MI which is sad enough but to SELL them is far worse IMO.

Ok here's the deal, Sue is putting a hold on her. She's available the 28th so unless she gets adopted we will pull her.  I'm already an approved Ratbones Foster home so I will take her in (cross your fingers that cranky Roxy likes her) and she'll be a Ratbones foster girl.  They do no vetting on them (of course since they are all about selling them) so who knows how healthy she is but the person Sue spoke to said she has a great  temperment is sweet and social.

If she comes to Ratbones we'll have to pick a name. I might need you guys to help given that the last name I came up with was for the Peanut and it was only because I couldn't think of a real name! Maybe I can do a name the foster contest!

That's great it sounds like she will be out of there and not on her way to testing.
Seems like if someone notified the media about what that shelter is doing, there would be an uproar. Enough people are against animal testing that it seems totally irresponsible for a shelter to sell them to that type of treatment. A shelter has a responsibility to try to rehome dogs. If they are unable to rehome them, the dog should be PTS- sad, but painless for the dog. Selling them off for testing is cruel- they will be exposed to chemicals and treatments we wouldn't wish on any living creature. I just can't believe a shelter would do that! Where is your local media on this and why doesn't someone try to put a stop to it?

Gwacie...could you, perhaps, send all that info, including the volunteer's comments, to the Oprah Show coordinators?

That could be an interesting follow up show to Pup Mills for them.

I recall, MANY years ago, a major uproar in Indiana over Labs BUYING dogs/cats off the street...there were many thefts of backyard dogs happening...several were later discovered in University Labs!

Anyway, if one shelter is doing that, it's more than likely being done by other shelters as well....

OMG -- this makes me sick. BLESS you Gwacie for pulling this dog...
I'm so thankful that our local animal control facility has a full-time vet and all dogs have vet care. However, after about a week... unless they are adopted... they are euthanized.
Pepper (the rat terrier I got for Shannon from our animal control center)... was taken there on Monday... on Tuesday he was neutered, vaccinated and a heartworm test done... on Friday I went and picked him up... but had I not done that he would have been PTS on Monday. I have no clue why a facility would do all that vet care and then turn around and euthanize an animal.. makes no sense to me. But they do. All of that was done on Pepper, and his adoption fee was $35.00! I guess they can do that because of their full-time vet (which our taxes pay for... but that's ok with me).
Gwacie... check for a PM from me please.

Amazes me that they do all that vet care, then euthanize that quickly?

Here our Animal Control does nothing with them....a fairly good "sign" they haven't long to live.

Amazingly, "Grace", the one we sprang in March (now adopted!!!) had been kept for several weeks. (She is so sweet & pretty)

Usually it's 3-5 days. If someone's dog escaped while they were still on vacation, they are s-out-of-luck....

That's why...ALWAYS have tags and a chip on them.

(Do shelters attempt to contact if chipped/ID'd? Would HOPE they do!)

I even have tags on my cat.

Why isn't the local news called??

Is that even legal?

Yes it's legal. They are in the boonies on the other side of our state and I am not sure who the local news would be or if they would care (tends to be a rural attitude). I'll look into it though, asking our coordinator what she thinks. I don't want to put rescue in a bad situation where they won't work with us to get the dogs out so I'm proceeding carefully.

UPDATE:

She's available on the 24th so I am going to be driving 2.5 hours on Thursday to pull her before they can have a chance to lay their grabby research fingers on this one.  I'm also picking up a litter of kittens for my sister who wants to get them into a no kill shelter (they were going to a kill shelter on that side of the state as no room anywhere for them).  Oh and I am possibly going to transport a husky who is also in the AWFUL research selling shelter and take it back with me to a rescue on my side of the state.  WOW did this spiral into a really busy day all of a sudden!

Anyway, stay tuned, I'm excited to get her safe and find out what she's like so she can, hopefully, go from worse than death row to a loving forever home in the near future.

If they are getting money from selling dogs to research facilities, I'm surprised they even try to adopt them out. Maybe the demand isn't as great as the supply.

Bless you for transporting all these animals from that awful shelter!
