I fostered Sancho back in 2004. He was saved from death row in the infamous TLAC Shelter in Texas. He was only a number at the time, and I wanted to keep his Texas roots, so I named him Sancho. How that name came to me, I'll never know... LOL....A wonderful Ratbone volunteer pulled him, put him on a flight, and I paid to have him flown to me so I could foster him.
He was this cute, tiny little thing with BIG ears. I had him maybe 3 weeks and a previous Ratbone adopter in MA saw his bio and adopted him. Sancho was the quickest adopted foster I ever had! Sancho went to his new home, and after a few emails, I hadn't heard from them, which is unusual for me, as most of the people who adopt my fosters and I keep in touch over the years. Sancho, however, was one that I always wondered about.
So we did a follow-up call to see if everything was going OK - and here's how the follow-up call went:
Ratbone Family,
You might recall that Sue Carello posted to chat a request for a follow up on one of her long ago adopteds - Sancho.
I thought you would like to know how the fellow has been getting along over the years.
In August, 2004, Sancho was driven by Sue most of the way to Weymouth, Massachusetts to meet up with his new owner.
The owner was overboard enthusiastic about their two Rat T's - Sancho adopted in 04, and Maggie, adopted from Ratbone in 01.
He just couldn't say enough good and praise worthy things about his two Ratties.
Maggie came to them on a tragic day, September 11, 2001. They have spoken often of the blessing they received by taking their Ratbone darling home on that day. Her arrival helped them all through all the sadness.
The owners were a bit concerned that Maggie, who had been the only Rat T. for 3 years, wouldn't easily accept having a new dog to share her family's affection.
Well-----the first thing Maggie did was to wash Sancho's face and ears----just like a good Mamma would.
This has become their 'before bedtime' ritual. I would declare that Maggie accepted the new fur sibling just fine !
The owner says that Sancho fit their family just like the "last piece of a big puzzle".
Sancho is such a lovable fellow. He adores cuddling and snuggling with every family member.
At bedtime, after his wash job, he leaps onto the bed, and dives under the covers for his special spot down at their feet.
The owner was very complimentary about the whole Ratbone organization in regards to their two adoptions. They were especially taken with Sue Carello's loving care of Sancho before he came to them, and for her long drive to meet them with their Sancho......
The owner said with great emphasis that "Ratbones is just the greatest, and Sancho is the best dog ever !" I would have to stamp this Rattie story to be an extraordinarily Happy Tail for them all !!!!
I couldn't have been happier!! My little Sancho - such a quick blurb in my life, but a dog I always wondered about and hoped he was OK. I'll post a pix of him in the picture section!!

True, when you understand rescue and overpopulation, it is sad in spring to read all the ads for puppies of every breed. NW Kansas has it's share of byb who may only have 8-12 dogs but it is usually a male and 1 or more females of several breeds so the ads will line up, same phone #, 3, 4, 5 or more breeds of puppies all at the same time. HOW can anyone think they can socialize puppies when they have that many at one time? Obviously they don't know or care about socializing. |

I don't know what we can do about them because there will always be people who will shop in petstores for pups or buy a puppy in that parking lot. When the chance comes, tell people not to buy unless they really check out the breeder, not to breed unless they are very serious and have proven champion qualities in their breeding stock and to rescue if possible.
Your guy probably got dumped when he didn't sell because he is a male. Had he been a female he probably would have just joined the breeding line up. PM $$$$ breeders are not going to keep extra males around, it costs to keep them and if they don't need a new stud, why bother. You are lucky Polo is OK emotionally. Spending their first 7 months in a puppymill can do serious damage to a dog's psyche. I'm glad someone gave him a good home. |

oh he knows.... he is most loving pup I have EVER rescued! he won't let me out of his site!(but not neurotic) but is enjoy'n his new brothers soooo much!its hard to believe he is even a rescue 'cause he is so well trained! It must be right, about the male thing there were 2 of them (boys)both got dumped! But Im stumped why you go through the trouble of training, keeping for 7 mons and then dumping at the pound? Why not find a home in the paper and give away w/ papers? where is now I know nothing about WHAT he went through... and WHY....? |
