If, for whatever reason, you have found that you need to rehome your rat terrier, please consider the following:

Ratbone Rescues (a great rat terrier rescue organization) offers a Guardian Assistant Program (GAP) for owners who want to rehome their dogs. You can see their wonderful site at www.ratbonerescues.com.

If you think GAP might be an option for you, you can send an email directly, with a summary and a picture of the dog, to Sue at suzie_redhead01@ yahoo.com (remove the space after the @ symbol) and she will forward them on to the GAP Coordinator, Susan Beard.

The reason this program exists is this - Ratbones does take in owner surrenders, and those dogs are usually in a safe environment (most of the time - now there are DEFINITE exceptions, like the Momma/Daddy/Puppies from CT). If fosterhomes become filled with owner surrenders, dogs in kill shelters will die because there isn't room in our fosterhomes. If an owner surrenders a dog to our GAP Program, they are put on Ratbone's website for adoption, and the owners take on the role of "Temp Fosters"...

It's not that these dogs don't need Ratbones, they do, but if they are safe for the most part, and if the owners will use the GAP for their dogs, it will give a SOS shelter dog a chance for a fosterhome.

Thanks for posting this Tracey and thank you Ratbones! This is a good option for some owners needing to rehome their ratties.

Sue sent me all of the information and asked that I include it so that everyone is aware that this is an option and helps those dogs that are desperate to be able to be saved.
