I don't recall seeing this guy yesterday? He is at the Philadelphia Animal Control. Listed as a Chi/JRT mix, but looks more like a toy or small rattie to me (and underweight) and scared

His name is Thor

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10321805

  • Animal: Dog
  • Breed: Chihuahua, Jack Russell Terrier [Mix]
  • Sex: Male
  • Age: Young
  • Size: Small
  • ID: A04203712
From: Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Association

More About Thor

Tiny Thor, a Chi Mix, is the perfect dog for someone that wants a small, very people-friendly dog. As a lost dog, he found his way to Philly Paws and is waiting for someone to take him home and teach him all of the tricks and agility he’s most likely going to be great at, considering his breed-mix. Thor, who is about 1 year old, needs to be in a home without other dogs or cats.

Poor mouse, he looks so pitiful. In that first pic he certainly looks rattie though.
Wonder why he can't be in a house with other dogs?

Who knows, MB. I think he's only been there a couple of days (posted on the 23rd). They may be one of those places that either puts that warning on any small dog and the cat warning may be because he's obviously some sort of terrier and some places automatically put that they aren't good with cats.

I know some places try hard to evaluate, but I think there's a genuine lack of understanding how different some dogs (and we all know this to be true of ratties) behaviors/temperment APPEARS to be one way in the shelter, but almost immediatley upon being in a "home-like" environment, a huge difference takes place.

Poo! It looks like EyeDr logged off before seeing this. Drat! If he comes back and I'm not here, someone point this thread out to him, ok

So true Tracey. I think ratties have the most beautiful temperament, it's all in how loved the dog is that makes them what they are

HEY! It's been known to happen that I occasionally leave rt-land Usually between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. LOL!!! (I'm getting my hair done tonight after work!!! So excited, so I won't be here for a while. SEE!!)

SIGH...it's so frustrating sometimes. I know that so many shelters/pounds work so hard (I also know of some that do not -- like my county!) but I think ratties in particular seem to have a very hard time in shelters. They're most often listed as some type of JRT mix, and while I don't have anything against JRTs, I think the general public has a lot of preconceived opinions on their personalities - i.e, extreme hyperness, jumping, barking, etc., that is so NOT what the rattie temperment is like Thus, I think a lot of ratties languish in shelters with people who don't bother to even see them because they're listed as JRT/mix.

Plus, it's pretty well documented as I said above that ratties just "freak" in a dog pound/shelter environment. So people who DO actually show up to see dogs in person are put off by the apparent timidness and fear.

Wish I had that Magic Wand that Nora mentions Poor babies.

I'm back.  This is a nice dog and very close.  Last night I put an app in for bello shemp.  How long do those apps. normally take before I get feed back.  Also, any input on wireless fences?  My sister who does rescue bull mastiffs has heard all good.

I use a petsafe fence for Jack, I haven't trained Jeter to it yet as he was to young and now it is too cold! Jack learned very fast where he could go and doen't challenge it at all.

Good, I'm real glad they work.  Think I'm buying one tonight along with the extra transmitter.  That way I can cover most of my yard.
