Since you're already looking at petfinder (which I highly recommend), I'll let you know about a FANTASTIC rat terrier rescue group called Ratbone Rescues (www.ratbonerescues.com) I really suggest you visit their site. They have many beautiful wonderful rat terriers in foster homes that need to find their forever home!!! They will help you find just the right rattie for your family and situation and work on transport help if it turns out he or she isn't local to you. Go check out the ones they have available. I bet you find one (or more) that is irresistable Welcome to the site. Why is it you're looking for a rat terrier specifically, if I may ask? Have you had one before ? |

I also search their site. I would like to try to keep it local. I have never had a rat terrier. At the farm my mother hase many jack russel terriers. We live in a 100 year old house near the Delaware River and have many mice, squarrels, moles and schews for a rat terrier to be entertained by. After deciding to get a dog again and doing research, the rat terrier seemed to be the perfect dog for us. I just have to find one. |

| Also, when looking on petfinder, I'd advise just typing in terrier in the breed selection and then small in the size selection because I can guarantee you there are likely some in your area that are being mislisted as other breeds and breed mixes, simply because ratties are not common in your area. |

I am thinking you may not be far from SuzieRedHead on here. she fosters for ratbones. Look at her new boy and who she got in, that may be a thought too. |

I have found those dogs, also. I have my four year old son part time. The site in Warrington will only deal with households without kids under 8 y/o. There is also a site on the Main Line, but they won't adopt to NJ, even though I can see PA from my house. They also require a fence. For now we have a 100 foot dog line and plan on installing a invisable fence. But, that will have to wait for spring thaw. We have best neighbor for walks. All of the roads deadend into the river, therefore nothing but local traffic. 100 yr old beech trees arching over the roads. |

One of our other members (JenMax) sent me this via PM. It wouldn't post for her, so this guy is in NJ and is available as well:
http://americanratterrier.com/immediate.html#New%20JerseyNew Jersey
Charles
New Jersey
CHARLES is an exceptionally handsome 8 year old fellow who is waiting patiently at Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey for someone wonderful to take him home and love him forever.
Charles loves to play ball and play with squeaky toys, and gets along very well with all other dogs. He enjoys showing-off his prancing gait on walks. This proud little guy does not like to be put in a crate and sees himself as "in charge"- he needs an owner who is experienced with the Terrier mentality who will respect his dignity but also work with him.
If you are in his area and have room in your heart and home for a really admirable guy, give Jennifer a call at: 856.772.1689 you will be glad you did.

More About ANGEL
Angel had a guardian angel of her own that watched over her until she was rescued in the Nick of Time from being put to sleep at a kill shelter. She is an affectionate darling who prefers nothing more than sitting calmly in your lap and giving gentle kisses. She is not hyper, and seems to be house trained. She likes small children and other dogs. She can be seen at our Meet & greets - Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM - At our new adoption location: Dog Town, 252 Bethlehem Pike- Colmar, PA 18915. (Directions on our home page- link to the right under the photos). Local adoptions preferred. Oh by the way these kind folks need temporary foster homes for dogs like this so they can save them from euthanasia. Please offer to become part of the solution. Due to insurance limitations we cannot adopt to families with kids under 8 yrs old. For the safety and well being of our dogs a fence or electric fence is required unless you live in town house or apartment.

What about Pasquale with Ratbones? he is in NY.
[script removed]
This is 4-year-old Pasquale. He is a handsome 15-lb. boy who loves to snuggle. He also loves to play and enjoys being with his foster mom and human siblings wherever they may be. His new adoptive home must include children, as he LOVES kids! Pasquale walks well on a lead and enjoys rides in the car but he is afraid of the crate so does not crate well. He is working on his potty training habits and is not yet 100 % housebroken. He will need someone dedicated to working with him to master this skill without having to crate him while out of the home. Pasquale is very energetic and loves to engage the other dogs in play. He is very gentle and loving and he is just looking for a family who will be there with him forever. If you have room in your heart and home make Pasquale your man he will not let you down. |

Looks more like a RT to me...they are very similar though. Shelters are horrible for labeling Rat Terriers as "Terrier Mix", "Jack Russel", "Fox Terrier", ect. Very seldom do they come out and say "this is a Rat Terrier".

FOUND THIS ON THE WEB
Rat Terriers and Toy Fox Terriers are DEFINITELY not the same, although they have a common background and some Rat Terrier's have Toy Fox Terrier's background in their pedigrees. Here are some of the differences:
- Color. TFTs may only be white and black with tan trim, white and black, or white and tan. RTs come in a much wider variety of colors.
- Size. TFTs may not be over 7 pounds. Although the RT standard does not specify weight, it allows dogs up to 19 inches in height, measured at the withers.
- Background. The TFTs were bred down from the Smooth Fox Terrier. The RT's background includes Smooth Fox Terriers, Beagles, Whippets, and Manchesters.
- Ears. The TFTs must have erect ears. RTs may have erect, tipped, or button ears.
- Tail. TFTs have docked or natural bob tails, with a high tail set. RTs may have docked, natural bob or natural tails, set on at the end of the croup.
- Eyes. TFTs may only have dark eyes. RTs may have any shade of brown from dark to amber, blue, or hazel eyes.
- Croup. TFTs have a flat croup. RTs have a slighly sloping croup.
