I know that many of us, if we had the money, the space and the time would have huge packs of Rat Terriers! But the reality is we have limits on the number of pets we can handle for whatever the reason. I know it can break our hearts when we see so many ratties out there that need help.

Well I am here totally on my  own. I am NOT speaking for anyone from Ratbone Rescues but I think a wonderful way we can help with rescuing more Rat Terriers is by volunteering with a group such as Ratbone Rescues. And one way we can volunteer is by volunteering out time to become a home visitor for their adoptions!!

I have sent in my volunteer application. Being a home visit volunteer is really not that hard. You are given all the tools and information you need and then it is just a matter of doing the home visit. Everyone I have spoken with says they enjoy being a home visitor volunteer.

Now, I also have a selfish motive for wanting more home visitor volunteers.  I'm waiting for my home visit from Ratbone Rescues and know that the coordinator is working VERY hard to set it up. However, if she had more volunteers to pull from, it could go much faster.  There are many, many foster dogs waiting for their forever home and the only thing holding them up is the home visit due to a lack of volunteers.

So why not go to the Ratbone Rescues site and sign up to be a volunteer?  This is such a wonderful group of folks, who care so much about Rat Terriers that it just seems a great place to ask for volunteers.

http://www.ratbonerescues.com/ratbone_volunteer_app.php is the volunteer page at Ratbone Rescues.

If you feel you can't do home visits, you  may want to volunteer to be a transport volunteer (several folks on here have done this and it is fun!), you can sponsor a dog that is in foster care or you can even become a foster parent.

Someone on another thread made the comment that they were excited to be able to adopt a shelter animal as the foster dogs were "safe" and not in danger of being put down. That is true, but by getting more fosters into their forever homes, we free up more foster parents to go and rescue even more shelter animals that are at risk of being euthanized due to overcrowding.

And a great way to get foster dogs into their forever homes, is to volunteer to be a home visitor!!

Thanks for reading this far!!

Cheryl,

I put in my application yesterday to volunteer as a Foster parent, home visitor, transporter, etc.

When you own a Rattie....you KNOW you are in your right mind

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

I am a transport volunteer with Ratbone.  It is very rewarding when you get them from some of the shelters that should not be called shelter at all into a foster home and then see them adopted to loving, forever homes.  Thank you Cheryl!

Cheryl...you go girl!!  Thanks for signing up with Ratbone as a volunteer!  Rescue organizations are always in need of additional volunteers!  Each person who does even one (seemingly) small job plays a very important role in the rescue/adoption process.   It's so frustrating when a lack of home visit volunteer or driver for one transportation leg be the one thing that slows down the process of getting a dog to their forever home!

I have sent in my volunteer application. Being a home visit volunteer is really not that hard. You are given all the tools and information you need and then it is just a matter of doing the home visit. Everyone I have spoken with says they enjoy being a home visitor volunteer.

Home Visit volunteer can be a fun job...you get to meet the prospective adopters and see their excitement about getting a new family member.  You have the opportunity to meet some really nice people!

Now, I also have a selfish motive for wanting more home visitor volunteers.  I'm waiting for my home visit from Ratbone Rescues and know that the coordinator is working VERY hard to set it up.

When you're on the receiving end of the volunteer's work, you can see so much more clearly the desperate need for more people to help.  RB has a very dedicated HV team...they will find someone to conduct your home visit Cheryl!

If you feel you can't do home visits, you  may want to volunteer to be a transport volunteer (several folks on here have done this and it is fun!), you can sponsor a dog that is in foster care or you can even become a foster parent.

What better way to spend a few hours on the weekend...helping a dog get to it's destination?  Warning:  you may fall in love with your little passenger.

Fostering is a big job...but the payment is even bigger: lots of kisses and endless love.  The great feeling that you have saved a precious soul and have prepared & united them with a loving forever family.

So true!

Each person who volunteers is an important spoke in the rescue wheel.  When we all work together we can help many.

Thanks for the posting Cheryl!

And thanks to everyone who does anything to help rescues!

I put in an application years ago to volunteer with home visits - unfortunately there hasn't been a huge need for them in my area of Virginia.  I did end up doing two home visits and they went very well.  I took Batman with me at the time to see how they would interact with the dog.  And they loved him!  Do you know if you have to renew your volunteer application every year?  I haven't heard anything from RBR in a while.  :-)

I just signed up for home visits. Now and then I may be able to do transports but, for now really interested in the home visits. Glad I did this and really look forward to doing it.

For those of you who are in remote areas you could also do Follow - Up calls on ratties who have gone home. We foster mom's love to hear how our adopted kids are doing in their new home. This is something you can do on your schedule and I use my cell phone during my free minute times.

If your interested email me and I can get you in touch with the Follow-up (Happy Tails) Crew Leader.
