Ok you guys. I had a really rough night last night. I went to bed worrying about all the stuff Nora is having to go through, with getting ready for her rattie meetup. Then, about 2:30 in the morning, I had a nightmare. I dreamed that we were watching alligators floating down the river, when one really huge one floated by, then whipped around and grabbed a German Shepherd dog, that was standing there, on the shore, next to it's owner. The dog got loose, then the gator grabbed him again, and started chomping. It seemed so real! I woke up in a sweat, and the first thing that came to mind was that we need a rattie relief/rescue fund...I was thinking, with as fast as our geroup grows, it would not be too hard to set up a pay pal account, and donate when we can, whatever we can. It is very simple to use. I used Sara's to send her the deposit for Remi. With hurricane season, starting in June, and supposed to be a bad one this year, I think it would be a good idea to prepare now. Cookie is a hurricane dog. I mean look how helpless we all felt when those poor ratties in Louisiana, needed transportation to foster homes? I was thinking a moderator would be good. Maybe Nora would consider taking it on. I mean we had over 800 members on our last site. Even if everybody only donated a dollar, that is 800.00 to help with getting a rattie rescued from a kill shelter. I hope I do not offend anyone, by suggesting this, but I just needed to get it out there. I have to leave for work in a little while. Ya'll have a great day, and I look forward to reading the comments on this when I get home tonight, at 11:30. Thanks.

I think we've sort of discussed this before. It's a wonderful idea, but has always run into some issues. Things like who is in charge, who decides what situations are going to be helped and which aren't, etc. and will there by arguments about those decisions. And even if we find a situation that requires assistance and the decision is made that we should try to help...there are often logistics issues, whether or not we have anyone local who can volunteer their time to rescue whatever dog is in need of help.

It is certainly a very worthwhile suggestion, I just don't think we've ever been able to come up with a satisfactory way of making it happen.

We usually get pretty passionate about certain doggies. That might be one way to figure it out. We would just have to have all the details.

Good idea Donna, except, like Tracey said, it might be too hard for us to decide on the right cause. Personally, I think if we all just do what we can for local rescue, and/or the HSUS we can be sure our money goes where we want it to. I know we all want to do as much as posible to save as many pups as we can!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Donna... but I agree with the others. I don't want to put myself in a position where the possibility of conflict might arise over which dog to help... how much money should we send.. etc. etc. We make a monthly contribution to our local shelter plus I help out financially on an individual basis when I know of a situation (such as Cali ) that is truly a needy and worthwhile cause. For me, these don't have to be rat terriers... it can be for any breed of dog. If someone can figure out an ethical and fair way to do this.. I think it's a great idea in theory!
Donna - don't worry about me getting ready for the meetup... I decided some time ago I'm not gonna stress over it and worry myself sick about getting ready. I'm gonna relax and have fun!

I agree that it sounds like a great idea, but the logistics are hard to figure out. I think that it is VERY sweet of you to think of it though Donna!

By the way, Donna -- your dream was weird! I don't dream. Well... I've heard everyone dreams, but some don't remember their dreams and I guess I'm one of those! I feel left out sometimes cuz I hear people tell these stories about the crazy dreams they've had.. and I just sit there unable to share cuz it simply just doesn't happen to me!

Donna ~ For those that want to specifically help Rat Terriers, Ratbone Rescues can always use donations -- plus Ratbone is a 501c3 organization --  so all donations made are tax deductible.

Ratbone has an annual fundraising auction on ebay that just started on Sunday. The short link to the auction is: http://tinyurl.com/2p8fag

Ratbone is also registered with http://www.igive.com/ and http://goodsearch.com so we can help them earn funds while shopping for things we would be buying anyway, or just by using goodsearch.com as our search engine instead of google, yahoo etc.

Goodsearch.com works just like any search engine, and it's powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results.  Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Ratbone Rescues as the charity you want to support.  Just 500 of us searching four times a day will raise about $7300 in a year without anyone spending a dime!

Sadly, while fundraising is terrific..... unless we have foster homes available (or someone to adopt immediately) there are so many pups that just can't be saved... because they NEED to have a place to go.

Ratbone provides basic medical care shots/spay/neuter for their foster dogs, plus any special needs (on approval) such as surgeries, emergency care etc. -- so that many (like myself) that have plenty of love to give, but don't feel we can financially take on more dogs of "our own" can still provide a welcome home, food, toys & plenty of love to these sweet foster dogs. Yes, it is hard to see them off... but knowing they are moving on to a happy new life with their new families... and making room for another pup that needs a place to go.... what can be more rewarding than that??

So, there are little lives who have a bunch of loving people out there, who will not make it over who's gonna drive? I am in tears, and I thought hope was limitless. I am sad for my fellow Ratties. Cheech.

Ratbone Rescues no longer has an annual auction on ebay. The person who used to do it for us left and joined another grop. They now have the annual auction.

But we do have a Goodsearch listing. And  we have regular raffles, which can be found on our website: http://www.ratbonerescues.com

Right now we have our private fishing charter raffle going (until March 16th). Soon it will be time for our annual Quilt Raffle. And shortly after that we have a raffle that has never been offered before (big secret!), which I am VERY excited about! We also still have a few cook books for sale, and will have a 2009 calendar that should knock your socks off. Oh! And we will again offer Rat Terrier Christmas cards in the fall!!

Thanks everyone - for always wanting to help the homeless Ratties!!

I agree witht he others. I think we need to let the "pros" handle this. We can help through donations and spreading the word and helping local shelters too. Great idea to want to help, though.

There is a volunteer with Ratbone now who just posted the first auction. She is trying it out to get funds for those in our sponors needed section. Her first choice is a special girl named Moxie. She will be doing more soon.

Rat Terrier lovers on this site are so generous and I am very thankful for that!
