Hi,

I have had my rat terrier for about a year and a half and I can't keep her anymore.  I am at school all day and my mom and dad work all day and my brothers go to school too.  Tempe is a great dog with a fun personality.  I can't just keep her locked up in her kennel all day anymore because it isn't fair to her.  I don't want to take her to the dog pound because if nobody adopts her, then they will kill her.  If anyone knows anyone that wants a rat terrier, please let me know.  She is not fixed.  She is white with a black face and she loves kids.

you are in Utah? The people on this site are amazing....I am sure we can find you a good home for Tempe. Are you sure you cant keep her? How many hours a day is she in her crate? My pups have to be crated while im at work...I think as long as you exercise them really well in the AM and PM, they are ok with being in a crate a good portion of the day ...they sleep something like 14-20 hours a day anyway.
Just making sure you cant keep her before you make this decision...at the same time I commend you for coming to a place like this rather tahn to a shelter, like you said, or even just keeping the dog and knowing that its not fair to her....very mature of you and it is obvious that you want what is best for your dog...not an easy decision!

Just be aware, too, that there are no-kill shelters out there! Ratbones is one but there are others...terrier rescues, etc. You may have to do some research online. That is if you decide you can't keep her. My dogs are alone all day, too, except that they have other dogs for company.

How many hours a day are you gone? Do you have to still crate her (don't know her age) or could she be loose in the house? Is doggy day care an option for you?

I am in utah. there will be pictures posted by this weekend. Unfortunately, doggy day care is not an option. if it was, that is what i would do. I would love to keep her and would give the world for her but now all she needs is someone or another dog to be there with her. So if you know anyone, please tell me.

Thanks

Hi Im in Utah too. Have you tried placing an add on KSL.com they have a very popular classifed section where I found both of my dogs! If you have no other option and this could be your last choice (if you are serioulsy very desperate) I would take her to the Humane Society of Utah in Murray. They are a very very very low kill and are pretty empty right now. I volunteer there and I have never seen a small dog there longer than a weekend! But I would really get an add with her picture up on KSL!

Please don't take her to the humane society. Contact Ratbone Rescues at ratbonerescues@yahoo.com

They can help. It may not be in one day but please give them a chance to help. They are an amazing group.

Tempe deserves a fair chance. Please give it to her. She would do the same for you.

What was she doing that was so bad?  In your first post it sounded like you just didn't have time for her...said she was a great dog with a fun personality....what has she done to deserve a possible death sentence?  You decided to get a dog....now you should be willing to keep her until you do find a good home for her.  Have you thought about this from her side of it?  She will be dumped off by the family she loves in a strange place....alone...scared...maybe she will be adopted or maybe she will be euthanized....and all along she's thinking "where are my people?"

Now, if that makes you feel bad then good - maybe you'll think twice about doing and giver her a chance at your home until another can be found.

UGH - WHAT A TERRIBLE STORY!  I don't think this person has even tried to contact the rescue group in her state of Utah, just seems impatient to "unload" the poor dog.  JNO, you didn't  even respond that you tried other alternatives and that the pound was it - that's the easy way, right?  I wish people like this would just give up being a pet owner - they do such a disservice to animals.  I pray this poor dog gets a loving home the next time around!

JNO,

Maybe this will give you something to "think" about:

When you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey. A journey that will
bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet will also test
your strength and courage. If you allow, the journey will teach you many
things, about life, about yourself, and most of all, about love. You will
come away changed forever, for one soul cannot touch another without leaving its
mark.

Along the way, you will learn much about savoring life's simple pleasures --
jumping in leaves, snoozing in the sun,  the joys of puddles, and even the
satisfaction of a good scratch behind the ears. If you spend much time outside,
you will be taught how to truly experience every element, for no rock, leaf,
or log will go unexamined, no rustling bush will be overlooked, and even the
very air will be inhaled, pondered, and noted as being full of valuable
information.

Your pace may be slower, except when heading home to the food dish, but you
will become a better naturalist, having been taught by an expert in the field.
Too many times we hike on automatic pilot, our goal being to complete the
trail rather than enjoy the journey. We miss the details: the colorful mushrooms
on the rotting log, the honeycomb in the old maple snag, the hawk feather
caught on a twig.

Once we walk as a dog does, we discover a whole new world. We stop; we browse
the landscape, we kick over leaves, peek in tree holes, look up, down, all
around. And we learn what any dog knows: that nature has created a marvelously
complex world that is full of surprises, that each cycle of the seasons bring
ever changing wonders, each day an essence all its
own.

Even from indoors you will find yourself more attuned to the world around
you. You will find yourself watching: summer insects collecting on a screen; how
bizarre they are; how many kinds there are or noting the flick and flash of
fireflies through the dark. You will stop to observe the swirling dance of
windblown leaves, or sniff the air after a rain. It does not matter that there is
no objective in this; the point is in the doing, in not letting life's most
important details slip by.

You will find yourself doing silly things that your pet-less friends might
not understand: spending thirty minutes in the grocery aisle looking for the cat
food brand your feline must have, buying dog birthday treats, or driving
around the block an extra time because your pet enjoys the ride. You will roll in
the snow, wrestle with chewie toys, bounce little rubber balls till your eyes
cross, and even run around the house trailing your bathrobe tie with a cat in
hot pursuit, all in the name of love.

Your house will become muddier and hairier. You will wear less dark clothing
and buy more lint rollers. You may find dog biscuits in your pocket or purse,
and feel the need to explain that an old plastic shopping bag adorns your
living room rug because your cat loves the crinkly sound. You will learn the true
measure of love. The steadfast, undying kind that says, "It doesn't matter
where we are or what we do, or how life treats us as long as we are together."

Respect this always. It is the most precious gift any living soul can give
another. You will not find it often among the human race. And you will learn
humility. The look in my dog's eyes often made me feel ashamed. Such joy and love
at my presence. She saw not some flawed human who could be cross and
stubborn, moody or rude, but only her wonderful companion.
Or maybe she saw those things and dismissed them as mere human foibles, not
worth considering, and so chose to love me anyway.

If you pay attention and learn well, when the journey is done, you will be
not just a better person, but the person your pet always knew you to be. The one
they were proud to call beloved friend.

When you own a Rattie....you KNOW you are in your right mind

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

This is just awful. I did look at the website (ksl.com) that was recommended she post an ad to, and apparently she did. Here is Tempe's listing on that site:

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&ad=2682504&cat=&lpid=

There are pictures and contact information listed there if anyone at all is able to help. I'm looking now at the shelters around the area to see if she's listed in any of them yet.

It's just ridiculous in my humble opinion to hurry up and dump this dog at a kill shelter. She claims the dog is housebroken and friendly and fun, but because she's in her kennel all day, it's not fair to her.

OK....SO your answer for that is to put her in a kennel in a dog pound all day. A place where she will be scared and confused and likely be traumatized and not show well to potential adopters in the first place thus making her much more likely to be put down!!!! What the hell???

I apologize for my anger, but this is beyond heartless. You think IF you claim to love your dog soooo much, you'd at least work a little harder and perhaps consider placing her with a non-kill shelter or rescue organization.

MB, can you call me? I will take her we just have to get her to Florida. I don't want her in a kill shelter. Just get her here, I can find a good home for her if I can't keep her. But we are planning on moving in about 3 months so I will have room then. It doesn't matter, just get her to me and I will take care of her.
