Just an FYI, I cannot do it this Saturday, I thought Sat wasn't an option so I am actually picking up another dog that someone left in a house, they moved but must have forgot their dog. Sunday is a possibility, I will keep checking back to find a day forsure, if it is decided to be Saturday is there a  back-up for the columbus leg I have?

I don't know if saturday will be a go anyway. I think we still need a few legs filled toward the beginning. I have posted our needs elsewhere, but so far NO ONE has replied at all. Very discouraging. At least he has until the 29th. I really would like to get him out of there sooner. But at least he's not in danger until then.

I am going to call the lady at the shelter again, and tell her our plans so far. Hopefully we will be able to get a few more volunteers and get him home.

Thanks Everyone who has signed up to help already. Henry doesn't know it yet but he is a very lucky little boy because of all of you!!!

I am wondering if it would be easier to use the money we all donated and fly Henry home, we will get him out of there faster and we don't have to worry about the unfilled legs or transportation. What do you guys think??

I didn't try the Ratbone Group, I'm not sure whye, mentalblock. I am looking into what it might cast to have him flown here. I think there is a small airport in Dubuque(sp?), but all the bigger ones are still many miles away.

I'll keep you posted with what I find out.

I was wondering about flights too. It would certainly be quicker. And with today's gas prices, all of our combined money for gas is likely to be much more that a one-way ticket for this guy. What would be the closest airport to Maquoketa, IA. If we could get him to Pittsburgh, perhaps Patricia could drive him to Morgantown and Dawn could pick him up there?

He'd have to get a health certificate from a vet first too.

There's a small airport in Dubuque (yeah Dawn, you spelled it right) The closest bigger airport would be Cedar rapids. I could go to the shelter and get him to an airport if that would help. Let me check into some flights to the area and get back to you.

Unfortunately, the towns around my area and the area of the shelter don't have direct flights to the Pittsburg area. Let me check Des Moines, perhaps Carla could help out.

United airlines flies direct from Chicago to Pittsburgh. The flight itself is about 1 1/2 hours.

Chicago is quite a ways. I would not be able to do it in an afternoon I don't think. There are Dubuque flights that go to Chicago, but I don't know how they do that if a pet has to get on a connecting flight.

Mocha had to do a connecting from Dallas to Tyler where I live...it went without a hitch. They really take great precautions with these babies. I will pitch in $50 for the flight. Mocha's flight cost me $175, but who ever picks him up will have to get him to a vet, because they have to have a health certificate to fly them, that is unless there is a vet at the shelter that would do it.

The temperature might be an issue, it's February in Iowa, and rarely gets above 30 degrees. I would be willing to keep Henry for a few days if need be, but I don't know if I can keep him until spring.

we're going to make this work guys, I know we will.

From what I have found out so far, I think the best flight plan is from Dubuque to Chicago to Baltimore(or Pittsburgh). I checked on american airlines (www.aa.com) and a people's ticket would be around $500 (hopefully pets cost less). I haven't been able to call anyone yet due to work, to see if and how they transport pets. I know that the small airport in Dubuque has like 4 or 5 daily flights, mainly to Chicago. Hopefully I will be able to call someone at one the Dubuque airport tomorrow and see about things. I'll keep you posted.

Dawn...

I flew Mocha and here's the drill...

The dog has to be in a hard sided crate where he can easily stand, turn and sit back down.
They must have a health certificate from the vet.
They fly in a special cargo area in the plane that is for live animals...it is pressurized of course.
They have employees that are specifically trained to handle pets.

Here is some info that I found on AA.com

Traveling with a Household Pet
If you are traveling with a household pet, please contact the American Airlines passenger reservations center at 1-800-433-7300 for instructions and information.

General Information
American Airlines Cargo welcomes many types of animals for transport and we care about the welfare of all animals that are entrusted to us. Our employees are trained to provide safe and professional handling at all times. With over fifty years of shipping experience, we transport thousands of animals, representing a wide variety of species, each year.

All animals must meet applicable government regulations and comply with the U.S. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Wild Fauna and Flora. Specific guidelines for the acceptance, care, handling and container requirements are published in the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations Manual. Unless there is a more restrictive policy, American Airlines adheres to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA's) Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) guidelines in order to provide your animal with a safe and comfortable travel experience.

Please see the Acceptance Exceptions section for important information that may affect the transport of your animal.

The information contained on this web site is for general reference and guidance only. Go to the USDA's APHIS web site at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ for detailed instructions and information.

Aircraft Travel Compartment Information
Animals are transported in the same compartments as baggage, mail and other cargo. These compartments are pressurized and maintain a temperature range from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Document Requirements
Document requirements vary by country and animal species.

Dogs and Cats:

* The original and 1 copy of a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian stating that the animal is healthy enough to travel by air and is free of injury and disease. The certificate must be dated 10 days or less from the date your animal will be shipped.

* A rabies vaccination certificate issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian.

OR
* A combination health and rabies certificate, with details as mentioned above.

* Other document requirements vary by country or territory. These document requirements must be obtained from the embassy of the destination country or territory. Some countries and territories also have regulations governing animals making connections through their country. Be sure to check with all embassies on the itinerary for their regulations governing animals.

Warm-blooded Animals and Birds
For the health and safety of your animal, American Airlines follows the USDA guidelines for shipping animals during periods of extreme temperatures. The optimum temperature range for transporting most warm-blooded animals, including birds, is between 45 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit at the origin, destination and connecting cities. Warm-blooded animals will not be accepted for transport if the actual or forecasted temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any city on the routing. (See exceptions below.)

Snub-nosed/Brachycephalic Cats and Dogs
Snub-nosed animal shipments will not be accepted for any shipping method if the temperature is over 75 degrees Fahrenheit anywhere in the routing. Some examples of snub-nosed breeds of dogs or cats are: American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Dutch Pug, English Toy Spaniel, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Japanese Spaniel, Japanese Pug, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Shar-Pei, Himalayan cat or Persian cat.

Shipping Warm-blooded Animals in Temperatures Below 45 Degrees Fahrenheit
For all animals, if the temperature is, or is forecasted to be, under 45 degrees at any city on the animal's routing, a Certificate of Acclimation is required in order for your animal to travel. This certificate must be issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian and dated within 10 days of the shipping date. It must include the shipper's name and address, type of animal and to what temperature below 45 degrees the animal can withstand (but not lower than 20 degrees). Your animal may be accepted as long as the forecasted temperature is not below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, or the temperature noted on the certificate, whichever is more restrictive.

A certificate of acclimation with no specific temperature stated on the document (i.e. animal's thermoneutral temperature zone) is invalid and will cause your animal shipment to be refused by American Airlines.

Shipping Animals in Temperatures Above 85 Degrees Fahrenheit
Warm-blooded animals (including birds) will not be accepted for transport if the actual or forecasted temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any city on the routing.

General Information
Animals must be accommodated in a kennel that meets USDA guidelines or the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations.

Photo of kennel set up for shipping. Click to view larger version
Kennels must:

* Be constructed of wood, metal, plastic or a similar material.
* Be leak-proof, escape-proof and the door must fasten securely.
* Kennel door must be constructed of welded or cast metal. Plastic or top-opening doors are not allowed.
* Be large enough for the animal to stand, sit and lie comfortably, and in a natural manner.
* Be outfitted with separate food and watering dishes securely attached inside the kennel so that if necessary, the animal can be fed and watered without opening the kennel.
* Be clean, with no offensive odors and contain absorbent material or litter.
* The use of straw, hay or wood shavings is prohibited.
* Be free of wheels. If the kennel has wheels they should be removed or taped to prevent the kennel from rolling.
* Be adequately ventilated. The total ventilated areas must be a minimum of 16 percent of the total surface area, including the door and three remaining sides.
* Not be collapsible or foldable.
* The shipper is required to secure rigid plastic kennels with releasable cable ties attached to all four corners of the door. American Airlines will provide the ties to the customer at no cost. The shipper may elect to provide their own ties or sealing mechanisms, provided they can be removed without the use of tools.
* Be marked with the words "live animal" on the top and one or more sides, in letters at least 1 inch high.
* Have attached labels with the shipper and consignee's name, street address and phone number.
* Have attached labels with food and watering instructions, the last time the animal was offered food and water, along with a supply of packaged food attached to the outside of the container or attach written instructions from an accredited veterinarian to not feed or water the animal. The animal must have been offered food or water within four hours before drop off at AA Cargo.
* Be marked with "this end up" or directional arrows on at least 2 sides.

Kennel Types
Kennels can be purchased from most pet stores. American Airlines does not rent kennels; however, dedicated Priority Parcel facilities and Cargo terminals offer for sale four sizes of FAA approved kennels, subject to availability.

* Never transport an animal with a choke collar or muzzle.
* Keep your animal as calm as possible prior to the flight.
* Purchase the kennel as far in advance of travel as possible and allow the animal to become familiar with it to ease the stress of travel.

I can get Henry to the Waterloo, Dubuque, or Cedar Rapids airport, and I'm sure Carla would be willing to get him to the Des Moines airport. What I'm concerned about is the temperatures. I can keep Henry for a while if it stays cold, but this is Iowa, and I don't know how long I can keep him. We're not really supposed to have pets without paying a pet deposit, so I'd have to be very careful.

I just got this email from someone from the Ratbone Yahoo Group:
Hi Mary,

I can do the leg from Zanesville- St Clairsville. Actually, I could do
the whole Columbus- St Clairsville part, since I'd be coming from
Columbus anyways. This weekend is out for me, but CAN DO next weekend.

Let me know what you need.
Thanks,
