Got an email from the shelter!

Hello and thank you for your interest in Henry. First yes he is still avaiable and you are only about the 2nd-3rd person to ask about him. He has been here since October of 2007. He is nice but can not be around anyone under 14. He gets spooked or something bugs him about younger children and he has nipped a a couple. He is in danger on being euthanized, he is on Dogs in Danger and is set to be put down the end of this month unless he gets adopted. The board would probably have to decide on if that could save him I would think that it would keep them for putting him done because then his chances of getting adopted would be increased. He would be great away from the shelter, I think. He is an older little guy and just needs someone to love.I hope this helps. If I can help you in anyway please feel free to ask. Thank you again for your interest.

i just heard from the shelter also:

Hello and thank you for your interest in Henry. He is a nice dog but can not be adopted to anyone with under 14 around him, he is an older little guy and seems to get spooked or is bugged by the younger people. He has been here since October 2007. He would feel better not being here "trapped" at the shelter. He is scheduled to be put down the end of the month, he is listed on Dogs in Danger. If he gets adopted or put on hold he will be fine because he would be adopted or waiting to be picked up. The shelter board would need to decide if a donation of adoption fee pay would save him but I would think that it would and I know that the lady that is at the shelter on a daily basis likes to pull strings for Dogs in Danger. I hope this helps and just maybe he is the dogs for you. We do have a 3 week trial period so if it does not work out that you could bring him back for another dog or a full refund. Thank you again for your interest.

so she didn't tell either of us the adoption fee! Well, at least we know that there is a chance that could buy him some more time I think I will email back and ask again how much $$ and see if they would adopt out of state.

don't know why, but the shelters response this time just irked me... weird. I think its because they think he's old...

Hello again. His adoption fee would be $70.00. I am sure that I could pull strings and get it so he could be here until he gets adopted or past away due to old age. Yes we do adopted to people out of state. Thank you again for your interest.

Does she realize that seven is not old for this pup. Heck Sasha is proof he could live to be almost 3 times as old as he is now. I hope he gets a second chance, If you need donations or anything to get him to a forever home let me know and I can chip in.

update:
Hello. His adoption fee would be $70.00. Yes we adopted out of state. The only thing that is different is that the fee would need to be cash to anyone out of town. Thank you again for your interest.

Wow, this sounds like it might it actually be possible. If everything lines up just right. I haven't been able to get ahold of the shelter yet but I am going to keep trying.

As I am still new to the board here, I don't know all of you and where you are located. I would definately be able to travel to anywhere I could get to and back, in one day. I think I could probably get as far as Ohio, or at least west Pennsylvania.

It would be so great if we could get him out of there.

It took awhile for us to get an email answer back. I did not try calling them.
This is what the website says for hours:
You can visit us during these ours: T / W / T: Noon to 6pm F / S / S : Noon to 4pm We are closed on Mondays.
Phone: 563-652-5360

You are in Maryland? That would really be an accomplishment if we could get Henry to you thru all volunteer efforts.
We'll keep our paws crossed!

I'm in Western PA if you could make it this far or part of Ohio I could take him from there to Maryland, not a problem.

Okay guys, if you're all in, I am going to get him. I have no problem getting the money to whoever springs him from the pound. I will try, try, try to make phone contact we the shelter people on monday and tell them the plan so far.

I live at [EDIT] for anyone who wants to start with mapquest. I am not really good with trip planning (always use AAA), so any help is more than welcome. I can definately drive to pennsylvania for my leg of Henry's journey.

This is awesome. This will me a true miracle if we can pull this off.

Nope.  Just business as usual for r-t.com.   Tracey already has a map with the travel legs that are needed,  we'll just need to work out the details.  I can get him from Indy to Ohio.

I don't know what happens next.  We probably have to wait until you make contact with the shelter again.  Hopefully, once someone can pick him up,  we'll get enough volunteers to transport him.  I'm guessing it'll be worked out once the news that you'll adopt him gets out.

Oh this is so awesome! I'm doin the happy dance!!

Tracey mapped out a sample transport plan here: http://www.rat-terrier.com/Home/tabid/37/forumid/7/postid/216276/view/topic/Default.aspx So I guess we can start volunteering for legs of the route! I just wish I was closer to help!

Oh, and the shelter is open tomorrow, but not on Monday... According to their hours its open til 4pm Iowa time. So you might want to call them tomorrow and let them know the plan I am so excited! Please update us and let us know what happens.... I just am beaming right now!

Just an FYI...I edited the posts with Dawn's exact address. It isn't necessary since you'll be driving to pick him up. I prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to posting exact addresses, phone numbers, etc. on a public forum.
