Do you have an estimate from the vets you've taken her too? What exactly are they saying needs done to her teeth? Are you getting her routine veterinary care otherwise?

Krista,

Have you tried vet schools. A lot of times they will do work for free or grave discount to get the practice. At 12 years old if you don't have to turn her into rescue I wouldn't, these are routine animals and it seems like she has had a lot of change.  I would try vet schools first, they may be able to help you out.

Sometimes a vet will do a payment plan....try a few different vets and explain the situation. Please avoid giving her to a rescue at this stage in her life it would be so hard on her.

I think sometimes people have the wrong idea of "rescue groups". We rescue needy, abused and neglected animals, and it is not customary to financially help owners with costs of maintaining their own pets. We hardly ever have enough $$ to care for the dogs that are already in our program!!!

Hypothetically speaking, if someone wanted to surrender their dog to us because they couldn't afford vetting, and we had room to take it in, we would then have the vetting done that is necessary and adopt it out to a new forever home.

Mary Beth has great advice. My BF and I had a vet here in OR that let us write a few post dated checks so that we could afford some of the treatments that Schatzi needed. They let us spread the cost out over a couple months.
What kind of money are they trying to charge you? What kind of services is she needing done? I think the idea of a vet school is a good one, too...

You have some good advice here. I don;t think sending her to a rescue group at the age of 12 would better her life. She may get her teeth taken care of but at that age most likely will not be an easy adoption. She would probably not do well with the change. Please keep us posted. I hope you can find a vet who will help.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!
I have found a vet that will do a trade with me... I am giving her daughter horseback riding lessons in exchange for the teeth cleaning. Bella gets her new smile first, then I will give her daughter 10 riding lessons. I knew it would work out!! THANKS!

She gets all the normal vet care (shots, check ups, nail clippings, etc...) and extra love.

Her dental cleaning was estimated at $650.00 - I don't think she had ever had a cleaning!!! Most of her teeth need to be pulled, and she needs surgery in her gums. Also, she will need to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks and after that will have to eat special food.
