He is 3 years old and he needs to be saved! He is in a county shelter. Anyone out their save this pretty boy. I owuld but I have a house full
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10072070
He probably needs something quick, I'm calling about sponsoring later today. If anyone else can get a hold of them. This boy may not have long, older ratties don't show well in shelters and he looks so miserable. His face is really getting to me. |

| I posted him as well in response to a recent thread from a newbie looking for a rattie in So Cal for her father. Not sure if she ever saw it. There wasn't any more replies from her. |

he is adorable!! Azrats, have you heard anything yet? I can't call from work, but later today if you haven't yet I can. I think Dawn is right though, they don't really have many kill shelters here, but I would like to be 100% sure If anything needs to be done I would love to help out since I'm so close to him... I just wish I could foster him, but we can't do that yet while we live in our shoebox... |

That kills me $35 dollars, I paid $30 for Alice. These dogs are priceless and worth their weight in gold. There is no amount of money that I would ever give her up for. |

I just came from the Shelter. They were calling him Max! Kennel Tag No. 741. He is VERY skinny. A standard sized rattie and only weights about 14 pounds. His pelvis bones are sticking way out. They said he did put on some weight but still very thin. He has been in the shelter since December 28. They said his teeth look bad. We had him put in a bigger kennel. Steve was with me. He was friendly but is going stir crazy. This guy needs to run! His legs are long and his attention seems to be on how to get out. He did jump up on my lap when I bent down. He also jumped up to stand by Steve while he was sitting on the bench. His attention stayed focused on finding a way out of the kennel. This is a very active guy. Full rattie. I was able to touch his front and back paws with no aggression. I was even able to touch his teeth but did not get a full exam of them. He did not want to be tied down. The Bonita shelter he is in is clean but the kennels are small, heated and outdoors. They do not pts unless there is a need. There was a lady who looked at him at the same time. She did want to know about the breed. But when we waited for her to come out she avoided me, so I asked the shelter worker and she said she did not think the lady would adopt him. So there is the update. The kennel was not full up all the way so he still has time, but going nuts in a small shelter. This boy needs a big yard and tall fence. He is a jumper. |

Please meet Max / Rookie.. Max is in the San Diego County South Shelter. I went to see Max yesterday at the shelter. He is a very active rattie who needs to get out. He has been in the shelter since December 28th. He was found very malnourished. He is a standard sized rattie who only weighs about 14 pounds. He have very long legs. I forgot to take my own picture and this one makes him look like a puppy. County of San Diego South Shelter

OK ,he's skinny...i can fatten him up. I know they said his teeth are bad.....but do they just need a professional cleaning or are there other issues......loose or missing teeth...etc ?
Why do you think i would need a crate to bring him home with me ? |

Because of his need to run free. He would definitely take any chance to break for freedom until he became used to being sprung from the kennel. Does that make sense? I'd take him to the nearest dog run to tire him out. He is a jumper. I would keep him on a lead the whole time. This guy is really sweet, but not doing well in this small shelter. Since they are not doing any testing, it might be a crap shoot to see what kind of health he is in. I share your enthusiasm for him. Hey kid I'm 50 and you and your wife are welcome to come out and visit with us. Are you in Pasadena? |

Thanks Dawn,
Chris and I are going down Sat. morning to possibly bring Max home. I knew we'd get another dog eventually, I didn't think it would be this soon. We miss Bob terribly but can't see waiting to save a life. We are so blessed and have plenty of room and love to share.
We'll keep you posted.

Update and small setback
I just got back from the Vet with our little Chihuahua-Terrier Sami. She's ok, but here's the story...
She gave us quite a scare about a week and half ago. She had some of the same symptoms that Bob started out with when he first got sick. She threw up one day. The next day she wouldn't eat and was shaking. Well of course we rushed her to the vet in tears.
When the vet went to take her temp she was crying and obviously in pain. I looked at him and he said that it wasn't hurting her, she just didn't like it. (She is pretty sensitive but it turns out that it was hurting her. Keep reading, you'll see why.) She had a slight temp. The vet took her for the day and ran all the tests; xrays, bloodwork and urine. We were so emotional about Bob we didn't question it at all. The tests didn't show anything (thankfully) and he gave her antibiotics. The vet said that she had perked up and I could pick her up later in the day.
When I went to pick her up vet tech handed her to me and she started crying in pain again. We brought her to an exam room and looked at her. She quieted down and seemed ok. He said that it was probably her stomach and to be careful. It just didn't seem right. I took her home and she was resting when I noticed blood around her rear. I immediately paged the vet in a panic and he told me that everything was ok. He told me to do some warm compresses and to bring her back in the morning. Well needless to say it was a long night. Especially after everything that we had just been through with Bob.
Turns out it was an abcessed anal gland. Poor thing. (I still don't know how we missed that, especially the Vet and especially with the clues she gave us.) Well, they took her to the back and shaved her little bum. (I could hear her wailing all the way out in the front.) He couldn't do too much else because it was so painful and it was draining on it's own. So we continued on the antibiotics and did warm compresses. She continued to improve over the last week and seemed back to herself the last couple of days.
I took her in today for a recheck and the gland had sealed up and was impacted again. He had to give Sami a little sedation (gas) and lance the gland. Poor little girl. Just when we felt like we could take a deep breath again. She's resting now but obviously not feeling too good.
So we're probably going to have to put driving down to get Max on hold for a few days and we're heartbroken. It just seems like a lot now. And I'm afraid of stressing Sami too much. It can be tricky introducing a new dog and having her anal gland all oozie and painful is understandably making her very sensitive. She seemed to be doing fine so we were feeling good about bringing Max home.
Although, I have to say I haven't given up just yet. We do have extra rooms and a good sized crate where Max can still come home with us but be separated from Sami. I might see if Chris wants to go on his own tomorrow while I stay with Sami. But he's upset about Sami and is concerned about more expensive vet bills right now. He feels so bad about Max and we just hate the thought of the little guy stuck at that shelter in the cold and rain.
So we have a lot to think about tonight. Please keep us and little Max in your thoughts and prayers.
Lori and Chris

I had some anal problems with Blade and we expressed the gland ourselves. Try calendula creme from henry's and apply. Should be completely gone in three days. If not, call your vet. Hugs, dawn n steve. |

UPDATE:
Good News!! Max/Rookie got adopted!! Yay!!
Sami was feeling much better this morning. I decided to drive down to the shelter, got about 1/2 way and thought I'd better call and check to see if he's still there before I drive all the way down.
Sure enough he'd been adopted.
I'm a little sad but I'm happy he found a home.
