Do we have anybody near State College, PA? There are 2 dogs in a shelter in Centre Hall, PA (I did a map search and it looked like it was near State College – the zip is 16828. Here are the link to the 2 dogs:

http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10032203

The shelter says they’re petrified – and try to bite. Most likely it’s fear aggression rather than normal aggression, because that’s how Sasha was when I first saw her in the shelter. I couldn’t go anywhere near her cage, and nobody else could either.

I've emailed the shelter to ask if these dogs are in danger and for any additional info.  I haven't heard back yet.

I was hoping we had a volunteer near there that could possibly go and check these dogs out for Ratbone. Once you get them out of the shelter environment, they’ll probably be completely different dogs.

This is the email I got from the shelter about these babies:

My name is Cheryl Sharer and I am employed at the PSPCA in Centre Hall, PA. We have 2 rat terriers here that were surrendered because their owner died. Little Fella is a neutered male and 1 ½ yrs old Patches is a 6 yo spayed female. They are very frightened and try to bite people. We are afraid they will bite someone and then have a bite history. They were find with the owners and we feel they are just traumatized. Could you possible help them. I think someone more knowledgable of the breed may be better for them. We are doing a transfer on Wednesday to Philadelphia so we are desperately trying to find a place for them. If you can help please let us know ASAP. They are posted on Petfinders under PSPCA centre hall branch. Thank you in advance.

PA is a very barren place for Ratbone. It’s one of the most difficult places to find volunteers to help with transports, home visits and pull dogs from shelters for us. I’m afraid this may be the case with these 2 babies if we can’t find someone who can check these dogs out and pull them for us if we can find a place for them to go.

Please, can anyone help?

Sue,
I am in the Pittsburgh area which is like 4-5 hours from State College but I will gladly travel up to help if I can in anyway. I'm not available on Wednesday but I am free the rest of the week and weekend. Just let me know. I sent you a private message.

Poor little ratties I hope Patricia or someone else near by is able to help. Most ratties in shelters, especially crowded kill shelters, seem to do so horribly personality-wise

Any chance that the Ratbones foster parent that was thinking of taking in Verne/Vinnie (but who went with ResQ instead) could foster these two??

Oh gosh, poor babies. That is a very small town part of the state, very rural. I hope something can be worked out for the poor little ratties....imagine being at your home with your people and then ending up suddenly in a shelter.

Again illustrates the need for your loved ones to be made aware of what is to be done with your pets in the event of your death. Of course, I realize sometimes the family promises to take care of them and just doesn't or the owner ASSUMES their family will -- and they don't. Poor ratties.

I'm waiting to hear from the shelter regarding these 2 babies before we go any further.  I want to know if they're in danger of being PTS, so we know how much time we have to find them a place to go.  PA is such a difficult state for us to find people to help with transporting, etc... that we have to make sure we have a fairly close place to take these 2.

Unfortuately, my Albany fosterhome has small children, and it says no small children

I emailed first thing this morning and haven't heard - so I'm hoping no news is good news...

I'll let you all know when I hear something.  THANK YOU!

Ok, I heard from the shelter this morning.  Luckily these babies are not in danger of being euthanized, so we have some time to work something out.

They were transferred to the Phily shelter, only to be sent back because the connecting truck didn't have enough room for them.  Poor critters.  The good thing about them being in the Phily shelter is that we could have them temperment tested first.  I was told Little Fella was a bit unpredictable and would nip, but that could be fear aggression.

So, that is the update - I'm waiting to hear from the shelter to see if they have anybody now who can temperment test them where they are now.

Thanks!
