Hi Everyone! I'm brand new to this breed ... having had dachshunds exclusively for the past 15 years. We have 2 mini dachshunds, an 8 1/2 year old female short haired and a 10 month old female long haired. To make a long story short, the 10 month old needed a companion to stop here from being bored and whining all day long so we went to the Norfolk, Nebraska animal shelter and came home with a male rat terrier puppy.
I'm hoping this works ... he's in love with my husband and has sat on his lap in the recliner for the past several hours. The girls seem to be okay except the 8 1/2 year old wants to "hump" to dominate him.
Anyway, there are 2 more RT's in the pound, one a 5 1/2 year old female whose owner just died and another one a male, not sure of the situation but figured I'd post it here for you rescue folks.
We had thought initially about adopting the female since she's spayed and housebroken but she was a nervous wreck whereas the one we got was very social, curious and came right to us without hesitation.
He had the squirts when we took him outside and the shelter gals didn't say anything about it when we got him so I'm hoping it's just nerves or perhaps the worm treatment they gave him. I'm a little nervous not knowing much about this breed and the fact he's a male (who will be neutered next week) ... prayers and encouragement are definitely needed!
Thanks in advance! |

Welcome and we have loads of info. Just ask. Many times the confusion and different diets after leaving a shelter is enough to give a dog the nervous bm. Just make sure to bring him outside every couple hours, esp. after eating and playing hard. I'm pretty sure a RT is NOT much different than a dachshund. Little intelligent and eager to please. |

| Hi hon, and Welcome to the site. IMO it's the best rat terrier site on the planet. We love to see pics and hope you will post some soon. Ratties are a wonderful breed, but I just want you to know that they are a working breed. They are excellent mouser's, and they have a LOT of energy. But a more loving breed I don't think you will ever see. I love doxie's too and hope you will post pics of them with their new brother. If the squirts last more than a day I think I would be calling the shelter and asking questions and call my vet and take him in. My rattie is a male, and I've never had any problems with him. The breeder said if I wasn't going to breed him to have him fixed to protect his health, if not bred the males tend to get prostate cancer. Those are the breeders words not mine. I just adopted Cameo from Ratbone Resuces and she came home last nite. They are wonderful dogs and just check the training and health forums here. If you have questions don't be afraid to ask. Any one who has any ideas will post and let you know. Again Welcome and congRATs on your first Rat Terrier. |

Welcome! A little plain yogurt should clear up the squirts if it's something minor like the wormer or a change in diet, could be stress, too. We have a couple of members on here who have/had dachshunds AND ratties so they'll be able to give you insight on the differences in the breeds. From what I've heard about dachshunds they are a more laid back breed so as your baby settles into maturity she may not be as playful as the rattie - they tend to stay puppyish for most of their lives- but they'll adjust. |

Welcome and bless you for rescueing this baby..I had a Doxie for 18 yrs. She was a miniature longhaired and I adored her. She was 18 1/2 yrs old when I had to have her put down in March. BROKE MY HEART!!!!!!!! By far the hardest thing I've had to do and I still hear her lil pitter patter on the floor. You won't regret rescueing your Rattie..Doxie are very special dogs and you will find that Ratties are just as special. |

Oh this breaks my heart because you all are going to hate me but he's going back tomorrow. My older dachshund just will not put up with him and after 7 hours and a house that simply reeks, I just cannot deal with the upheaval. The lady from Puppy Love is coming in tomorrow (sunday) so we can bring him back and I've made the decision that there simply will not be any more dogs in our house again. Dealing with a 10 month old doxie who refuses to potty train is bad enough and I've bonded with her too much that I can't give her up and I refuse to give up the older one so this situation is really upsetting ... the little guy is such a sweetheart and will make such a wonderful pet for someone, I just pray he gets a forever home where he's got people who are more patient and dogs who aren't such grouches. I'm sorry everyone ... |

| Awwww~ I know you need to do what is right for you, but are sure you feel like you gave it enough time??? Hasn't it only been 1 day??? It took Caesar about 4/5 days to start being friendly to Julia and now after 9 months they are best buds!!! Playing together and sleeping together! Poor little guy~ my heart is breaking for him! |

| Don't worry no one hates you and thanks for letting us know. Having a 10 month old pup that still isn't housetrained would certainly complicate getting another puppy. Hopefully the shelter will find another home for him soon....I worry about his diarhea though....are they going to take him to a vet? |

| I'm sorry that it didn't work out, but no one hates you. Puppy Love is not a no-kill shelter, but puppies usually have a much greater chance of getting adopted than older dogs. |

| Welcome NebraskaMa. I, too, raised dachshunds for 30 years. After my lasts died, and upon retiring, we tried our first rattie, Button, in my avatar. Three years later we rescued a little female over near Texarkana. No turning back for us. We adore these little dogs. Can't believe it to me to age 50 to discover I like energetic dogs better than the dachsie personality. But we both just love the non-stop, 24/7, 365 entertaining these dogs do, as well as the laughing they invoke. You're gonna truly LOVE that little rattie. And also this site! Again, Welcome to you. |
