 Rattitude Problem

I didn't ask her how long he'd been there. I said sometimes ratties don't eat well in shelters and she laughed and said "oh he eats fine." I guess they are concerned that he isn't putting on any weight. She said he'd been wormed, but didn't say if they'd seem worms since then.
This scares me, because I don't want to bring worms home to Bob and I can't afford vet care for a dog that may end up having a serious health problem that is causing him to be so thin. I guess I'd just have to take a leap of faith. |

| It can take some time to "fatten up" a dog (remember Bo?) and he may be one of the naturally thin ratties that never does look "big". Plus, it could also depend on what he's being fed. |

| Don't know if it helps but Noodles looks starved. She eats like a pig, anything she can beg, falls or is in her bowl. I have taken her to the Vets twice for this. No worms. No nothing. Vet says she just burns it off quicker than she takes it in. And yea i know how much energy can be spent in a cage, but that is the physical part, maybe just the fact he is in a cage with all the other BAD sights and sound of the "pound" keep him nervous enough to keep fat burned off? |

Yeah, you are right Tracey. I'm sure they don't feed the best quality food at a shelter since they have to buy so much of it. Poor guy. |

| Okay here is a postive, maybe bringing Verne home to Bob, Bob will lose a little weight and Verne will catch it. And then they both will be happy campers. |

Sorry, guys, it's not gonna happen. I showed hubby his picture and he thinks Verne is part-rattie and part-big dog. He thinks he is too big to have in our small house, along with Bob. I shouldn't have gotten my and your hopes up.
I really, really hope someone adopts him. |

more info on Verne... I've been on the site.. Stillwater Animal Welfare Division Our Pet List Our Pets on Hold (Strays, Lost & Found) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pet of the Month Our usual adoption fee is $40. We occasionally have animals "on sale" during times that we are crowded. The ones for reduced adoption fees of less than $40 usually have come to the shelter already spayed or neutered, allowing us to drop their fee. Dogs "ON SALE" are; Max, Brownie, and Tory. Cats "ON SALE" are; (none). News HOURS, ADOPTION FEES, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, DIRECTIONS ON BOTTOM! * 4 or 5 lb bag of Hill's Science Diet with each adoption. (unless we run out)* ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT WEEK END ADOPTIONS: If you see a pet on this site that you like on a weekend day, do not e-mail us about it because we are not in the office. Just come by the shelter between 1 PM to 5 PM on Sat. or Sun. and adopt! Another shelter, our local Humane Society is located in our complex. They are open and can do the adoption for us. If you wait until Monday, or e-mail us and wait for a reply, you might miss the one you want. If you want to call on the weekend to see if the pet is still here, the Humane Society of Stillwater's phone number is 405-377-1701. Our (Animal Welfare) phone number for all other days is located on the bottom. If you need assistance having your cat or dog spayed or neutered, please come by the shelter and get an Companion Animal Assistance Program application. Who We Are We are the municipal animal shelter that takes in stray and homeless animals for the City of Stillwater. We are staffed by a shelter director and two animal welfare officers who enforce city ordinances. We are small, 13 dog runs and 26 cat or puppy cages, but have many new animals available weekly. We are unique because we have two shelters in one location by leasing to our local "no kill" Humane Society organization who has many more animals not listed on this site. (They have their own site on petfinder.) However, our shelter is NOT a "no-kill" shelter and we need to make room for new animals weekly, so the animals listed here are in desperate need of homes. Not all of our animals are listed, so if you are close, please come visit! Adopting a friend Our adoptions are $40.00. If the dog or cat is not already spayed or neutered, we will make an appointment at a veterinarian's for the animal to be spayed or neutered and you can pick it up from the vet the next day. If the unaltered animal is a puppy or a kitten, or if you live too far away to pick up from the vet, you will sign a contract agreeing to have the animal spayed or neutered and will receive a $20.00 deposit back after you show proof that you have had your new pet spayed or neutered. Small exotics like rabbits and guinea pigs are only $5. Others such as ferrets will have varying adoption fees. We are open 8 to 5, Monday through Friday. Our Humane Society which is located in the same building can adopt our dogs to new homes for us after we close on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings until 6 PM, Thursday until 7 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1PM to 5 PM. Come Visit Us! Highway 51 runs east and west through Stillwater and becomes 6th Street in Stillwater. Main Street intersects 6th Street in the center of Stillwater. Turn south on Main street and go about 12 blocks. The shelter is located on the west side of the street. Sorry, but we cannot ship animals. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stillwater Animal Welfare 1710 S. Main St. P.O. I have emailed the shelter. Here is what I said... Dear Animal Welfare, I have word that a rat terrier is in trouble at your shelter. I will be working today to see if I can find someone to adopt or rescue and foster that little baby. It is my mission to get his guy to a safe haven. Please respond and let me know if you have received this message. I would also like any info you might have regarding this dog. Very truly yours, Dawn Muscarella San Diego, California |

Dawn, thanks so much for helping tackling getting this little guy rescued. Sure hope he can be pulled and fostered if we can't find someone to adopt him outright! I'm really confused why they (Stillwater, OK) have this high-kill facility but say they lease space to the Humane Society which is no-kill. How on earth do they determine which dogs go where??? |

No word yet. I did find two volunteers and asked them to help on the Frapper Map pages. One in Tulsa and one in Oklahoma City. They are both over an hour away. Besides I'm not sure how old those listings are or if they are willing to do anything. I will email the rescue groups now that I am settled down at work. Email me if you have anything to tell me. |

Good luck, I hope there is someway to help this little guy out. I have learned it is amazing what you can accomplish once you set your mind to it, there is no doubt something will work out for you, I just know it. It is so sad, I just had to call a kennel to see how many terriers they were housing and you can just hear all these dogs barking in the back. . Do what you can and dont' give up, we can't save them all but we can make a difference for some. |

Here is what the shelter said about him. He is a small rattie.... He was an unclaimed stray. He is tall (leggy) with a long tail. He is 13 lbs but is underweight; he should probably weigh at least 15 to 18 lbs. He has been vaccinated for all (except rabies), wormed, neutered and tested heartworm negative. |

I've posted to our Ratbone chatboard to see if we have a fosterhome available. I don't know if we have anybody close to OK who can pull/foster.
I also emailed the shelter to ask what we can do to buy him some time while we find somewhere for him to go. I haven't heard back yet, but they said he's in danger of being euthanized by next Friday if he's not adopted.
