First things first, I've already been in touch with the facility. She is not in danger of being put to sleep soon and if she can find a sponsor, she's guaranteed not to be put to sleep. I'm waiting word on how much $ it takes to sponsor and how much time that buys her.
Second, though she is only 1 1/2 hours from me...I can NOT take her Much like Brandy, Nora, and probably some others, my first concern if for my older girl who I know would not take well at all to an adult dog being brought into the home - plus this rattie (as you will see) probably would not cope with any "Anna attitude" and/or Daisy exhuberance and she's had a rough enough life. And because I work outside of my home full time, there's no way I could try. And I feel sick about it.
So, anyway, I know there are some ratties that are fostered by Ratbones in Ohio. I'm most hopeful that perhaps one of these foster parents could maybe take her or know of someone who could take her.
Here is any.... read her story that follows (if you want to)

This little old lady is 10 yrs old. She is an owner surrender. She was a breeder dog and is no longer used for breeding, therefore, she was brought to the shelter. Annie is a black and white rat terrior. Annie is very timid. She needs to be an only dog.
So, of course, here's my rant. How the hell do you have this girl for 10 years and have her producting litter after litter after litter of pups to make you money and then at 10 freaking years old, and right before Christmas, no less, you dump her at a God-forsaken kill shelter!!!!!! (If I knew who you were...I would make the 1 1/2 hour drive to kick your.... )
Seriously, I don't understand, can't even conceive of being this cold-hearted and cruel. And I now know I could not work at a shelter like this. If I was on duty and this SOB came in and said here, take her, she ain't good for nothing no more -- well, let's just say I'd need an attorney because I would NOT be able to keep from doing harm.
For those of you that made it this far ... thanks for listening. For those of you that post a reply, thanks in advance for commiserating with me

wow, that is so sad... I don't understand some people. Where is she? I could ask around to some family/friends in Ohio and see if they would be interested. Or at least when you find out how much $$ she needs to sponsor... Poor baby |

Obviously this "owner" thought of her as property, an object and not a living being. If the shelter had refused to take her, he would have gotten rid of her in a different permanent way. Sad to say, but I've heard of people killing the dog that can no longer breed, or fight, or herd or whatever job it had. I hope this poor old lady finds a nice quiet home with an older person and has a peaceful rest of her life. |

Kim, she is in Coshocton --- about 1 1/2 hours east of Columbus, 2 hours south of Cleveland, kind of middle of nowhere. Just got email back that $40 will sponsor her until she's adopted. She has had no inquiries at all |

This makes me so angry...5 years ago my son wanted a "green" cat, he was three at the time. We went to the pound and founf a Manx X who was 6 years old, fix and declawed. She was surrendered because she did not get along with the kitten that her owners brought into the house. Tony was an only cat for all of her life and they expected her to accept a new kitten after only one week...that is how long they kept her after they got the kitten. We found Tony on her next to last day of life... My sis ter is a multi dog dog breeder and when her females become to old to have pups she keeps them because they are her babies or if the reasons are necessary she gets the dog fixed and finds then new homes with loving families and stays in contact with them. She has only had to do this 3 times in the 30 years she has raised dogs and it roke her heart to find them new homes but some times it cannot be avoided... God to have that happen to an innocent makes you wonder what the owner would do if they really hated someone.... |

Oh God that poor mouse. Look at her face - she doesn't understand why she's there but she's ready to love someone/anyone who takes her!
Sometimes people make me sick. I could NOT work at a shelter either or they'd be prying me off every SOB that comes in with a story like this one. |

Tracey -- I'm right there with you... but I've learned that situations such as this with breeder dogs are not uncommon. Diane (my friend who was the one who alerted me to Pepper being in the pound)... has a breed bitch (papillon) who has lived her life in a cage giving birth. She's not socialized... she's scared of her own nose... and wants nothing to do with people. Diane is trying to rehabilitate her, but progress is slow and she will NEVER be where she should be. (so sad)
It's sad... but not uncommon at all. It's reason # 237 why I despise backyard breeders. At least the more reputable breeders attempt to find good homes for there breed stock once they are no longer used for breeding purposes. Some reputable breeders even let their dogs live out their lives in their homes... |

Tracey,
I can feel and understand your frustration. I felt the same way about my Sasha - they dumped her at 13!!! That's why she touched my heart so... how could someone just DUMP an animal that has been a part of their family after THIRTEEN YEARS???
Can you post the link where this girl is? I'll post it to Ratbone's Chatboard - these oldies really touch my heart - and I know they do a lot of Ratbone members....
Thanks,

Sorry, guys....we got told we could leave work early and then I had to go to Walmart Just got home. Here is her link: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9522696
I emailed Tammy at the shelter again asking how any $$ could be sent, but haven't heard back yet.
Sue: Thanks for posting her with any other Ratbones members. I'd like to see her have a chance with someone.
Her adoption fee would be $40.00 as well.
Love you guys |

Rescues have always touched me and many times I avoid this whole subject, but now after getting Pepper, I feel like I want to save them all! It's not possible and that kills me.
I would be willing to send $ to help out too.

This is just so sad. I am willing to forward any amount of money to sponsor her until she is adopted. I cannot adopt her myself as I already have my little guy and it says she needs to be the only dog. Please let me know where to send money and if anyone wants to split the sponsorship fee--but I'm also willing to pay more on top of that if it would help, which I imagine it would. |

Tracey,
I just posted about Annie. I know we're just busting at the seams with dogs in our fosterhomes, but I'm hoping someone can help.
If we do have someone, but it's in a different state, can you, or do you know someone who can, pull Annie and start her on a transport? That may be the one obstacle we will face in this case...
Let me know. Thanks.

These are great ideas. And y'all are the most wonderful people. The $40 will guarantee (they say) that she'll be not euthanized and kept until an adopter is found. I am most hopeful that either someone on one of our contacts list will perhaps know of someone who would be the perfect fit for her or one of Ratbones connections will. . . keeping my fingers crossed that a miracle happens for any. |
