This post is for those who may be visiting our site because you have found, for whatever reason(s), that you need to consider giving up your rat terrier:

Please, on behalf of all of our members, we BEG you to register here and post about your rattie!!! While we may suggest alternatives like training to help you to be able to keep your rattie in your family, what we want most of all is for you to know that if you decide that your rattie can no longer be a part of your family, that everyone here will reach out a hand and do our absolute best to see to it that your rattie is NOT taken to a kill shelter.

We have members all over the United States, and in Canada as well. We have many members who belong to a fantastic rescue group known as Ratbone Rescues ( www.ratbonerescues.com ). PLEASE visit their site and contact them, but do post here as well.

We recognize that this fabulous breed is not for everyone and that sometimes extreme extenuating circumstances arise that are beyond our control. Whatever the reason, it is IMPERATIVE that the dog not be taken to a "pound" where they will undoubtedly likely be "put to sleep". Rat terriers, even very cute, young ones, do NOT "show" well in typical shelters in cages. They are often reported as cowering in the corner of their cage and becoming depressed and fearful. Please do not do this to your dog. Somone, somewhere is waiting to provide him or her with a great forever home where they will be loved and provided for in the way that they deserve!

Thank you for coming here and taking the time to read this. This post was created on behalf of Lucky, a little guy who wasn't given a chance and is now no longer with us

OK over on Annie's Board there is this lady Donna in Fort Wayne Indiana. She has taken in two of the three ratties that some homeless guy was keeping in his car! She already has 9 fosters and 4 of her own dogs, as well as cats.

It is so close to my heart because of the former neighbor who lives in his car here in SD who lost one of the three of his to a coyote one early morning. Some people! Oh well, if someone out there can help Donna, go to Annie's Board and click on the link here..

http://members3.boardhost.com/RATTERRIERS/msg/1196128583.html

Thank you! I have been emailing the rescues today and trying to get some help. If we can find help the guy will give up the third dog in his car. They must be freezing!

There are two ratties at Puppy Love in Norfolk Nebraska if anyone is insterested in rescuing.  One is a 5 1/2 year old female and the other a young male (we adopted the third one just today).  I wish I had read about them not showing well in shelters or we'd have taken the 5 year old likely ... hubby just wasn't impressed since she wanted nothing to do with either of us and had a really high pitched whistle.  So we ended up taking a young male as a companion to our 10 month old dachshund.  Hopefully this works!    He seems to adore my hubby whereas the girls are all mine!

Funny you posted this Tracey..I lay awake most of the night thinking about Maggie..Maggie is a Jack/Rat that belongs to my sister that lives in Dayton, Ohio. Poor Maggie is DEFINETELY NOT IN THE RIGHT HOME!!!!!
My sister has her hands full with 4 boys, ranging from 18 yrs old-8 months old. Maggie gets nothing but bad vibes in this home. Her 18 yr old son and her husband hate her. She does have issues but its not Maggies fault. Maggie NEVER gets walked, she never has any interaction with anything outside her house or the chain they tie her to when she's pottying. They have a fenced in yard but she jumps the 4 ft chainlink fence. She gets food off the counters all the time when they are out. (CRATE HER). I love my sister, she didn't realize what she was getting into with Maggie. I should say Maggie is spay and up to date on shots. She's housebroken and really is a sweet pretty lil girl. Soooo, they are posting a "free to good home" ad in their local paper today. I am posting this just hoping and praying that someone can help Maggie. She needs someone to love her.

Have they found a home for Maggie yet? If not you might want to post this as a separate post so more people notice it.

I'm Krista Koster- avid equestrian, animal lover and advocate for animals. I found this email by searching Rat Terrier breeders in WA state on Google.
I am writing you today to see if you my help be able to help a Rat Terrier in need... Here's the situation: My boyfriend and I rescued a Rat Terrier from neglect. His friend had this dog (Bella) as a child, then took Bella fromt he family when she moved out on her own (along with an Italian Greyhound). The owner started doing drugs, which lead her to her going CRAZY and neglecting the dog for days and even weeks. The family stepped in and took the IG but couldn't take Bella too. I couldn't stand seeing Bella go to the pound so my boyfriend and I took her. We have had her for over a year now and LOVE LOVE LOVE her! She's the smartest, most well behaved dog in the world!
Anyways, because Bella was neglected for so long, her teeth are in REALLY bad shape. My boyfriend and I can't afford the vet bill to get them fixed but she needs it very badly. I have chacked at many different vet offices in the Seattle area and none can help us. I know there is a vet credit card, but I don't want to get into debt. We are just starting out after college and just can't pay much yet!! Is there a place that might help pay for it? OR even if they would pay for it and we would have to give her up - I would do it to make her life better, in an effort to make up for the horrable treatment she faced early in life. We think she's about 12 years old. She is purebred but neutered. Any advice or help you could provide would be appreciated!

When I start making money later in life, I will be sure to pay-it-forward and donate the money back!!
Thanks,
Krista Koster

Is there any way you could come to Utah to adopt my rat terrier??  I posted about her on the site.  Her name is Tempe and she is a great dog, but my family and I are never home and she ends up spending most of the days in her kennel.  She's very affectionate and fun and a good natured dog.  If you can't get her, hopefully you can help me find someone close or even in Utah that is willing to take her and give her a loving home to live in.

Thanks!

We have a Rat Terrier who needs a good home. He is a typical Terrier. He talks a lot and wants a lot of human interaction. He is great with children, and he seems to do well with other animals, though he does bark at new animals a lot when first meets them. He is six years old and neutered. He really is a good little dog. Our life has changed significantly and his needs are not able to be met well enough for him to be truly happy. We love him dearly, but we feel that we have to give him the chance for a truly fulfilling life. We absolutely will not give him to a shelter or humane society to chance where and if he might end up. We will not list an ad in the newspaper for the same reasons. He is a good dog; he just needs more one on one attention than he is able to get in our home now. We would appreciate all of the information and assistance you would give us.  We live in Missouri.  We appreciate your help more than you can imagine, and Cheech does too.

Thank you so much for being here.

Pggh, I moved this to a thread of its own in the Rescue section under Missouti Rattie needs new home subject. It should get more exposure and response in a thread of it's own.

Steven, Thank you for moving me to a new thread on my own. My mom wants to help your group and my fellow Ratts even after I find a great home. She can probably help transport someone to their next great home, or learn and do some home visits. I will have her fill out the form tomorrow or the next day for those ways to help. She loves to help and we live in St. Louis, Missouri. Thank you so much for your helping me.  Cheech Rat Terrier of Pqqh

My loving Rat Terrier is in need of a new home. I have had her (Killer) for almost 5 years now. However, in the last 2 and a half years I have had three children. It breaks my heart to see her moping around the house because I don't have time to give her the attention that she deserves. She does OK with the children but I would prefer for her to be in a home that knows about the needs a rat terrier has and has no children or older children that understand these dogs as well. She is crate trained, house broken and knows a number of tricks. She has been spade. She loves being held and loved on. She hates children that interupt her sun bathing! I feel horrible for doing this. Before I had my first kid she was my baby. I know that giving her up is for her best though. PLEASE HELP!

May I ask why you have to give him up. Have you had him since he was a pup? Do you have any pictures you can share. Any possibility he can stay with you for a while (Ratbone Rescues - a great organization has a GAP program where a rattie stays with the owners while they post him/her on their site for adoption).

Tracey,

Thanks so much for offering GAP.  GAP is a great program where you can keep your rattie in a loving environment he/she is familiar with while Ratbone promotes your rattie on at least 3 websites, we screen the applicants, check referrences and do homevists.  It doesn't end there, we also do follow up calls and have a team of volunteers who just do that to make sure everything is going okay in their new home.

You can email rbrgap @ yahoo.com (remove spaces) and Susan will send you everything you need to know as well as answer any questions and help you along in the process.

I hope this solution is one that interests you and I wish you success in finding him/her a good forever home.
